Cervical screening is for everyone aged 25-64 who have a cervix, irrespective of s*xual history, s*xual orientation or gender identity

The test initially looks for high risk HPV, the virus which causes the majority of cervical cancer.

HPV can be contracted via vaginal, oral or a**l s*x, close contact with ge****ls, or using s*x toys

If you have never had any s*xual contact your risk is lower but cervical screening is still encouraged as a small proportion of cervical cancers are not caused by HPV.

Some people worry that having a cervical screening means you are no longer a "virgin". Virginity is a societal concept which means someone has not had s*x. Having a medical test has no bearing on this at all. If you have concerns about this let our nursing team know so they can discuss this with you further.

Think of it this way.... if you have a healthy and active lifestyle and a good diet your chances of diabetes are much lower, but you may still want to be tested. Cervical screening is another routine health check which should be considered irrespective of your perceived risk factors.

There is a measles outbreak in the UK.

Measles is a highly infectious, vaccine-preventable, viral disease.

Initial symptoms include fever, conjunctivitis, cough, runny nose and sneezing. This may be followed by small grey/white spots on the inside of the mouth and a rash.

If you or your child have not had 2 measles vaccines you are at increased risk. Contact us to book.

Lots of people find smears uncomfortable, it is important we acknowledge this and don't dismiss it as a myth. However there ARE things we can do to help.

Here are some of the things we can offer to help you to feel more comfortable

- longer appointments
- an appointment with a GP or nurse before to discuss the process in more detail
- you can bring someone or something with you as a comfort
- sometimes we suggest using hormone cream for 2 weeks before if you are peri or post menopausal
- we can give you a speculum to practice inserting prior to your appointment so you can get used to the sensation
- appointments with a female
- a chaperone from the health centre
- using a smaller speculum

These are just some of the things we do... if you have any other ideas or concerns talk to us about them. We will do our best to help.

The majority of cervical cancer is caused by a virus called HPV. This virus is very common, infact 8 out of every 10 people will contact it at some point in their lives. Even if you and your partner have only ever had s*xual contact with each other there is still a risk. HPV can "sleep" in the body then reactive. You could test positive for the first time without having any new s*xual contacts.

We would encourage everyone with a cervix to attend screening to help prevent cervical cancer.

23/01/2024

Cervical screening is not actually a test for people with symptoms and it is not a test for cancer.

It looks for viruses and changes to the cells of the cervix which can lead to cancer over time.

People with these changes often have no symptoms at all.

If you are found to have a high risk virus you may be offered extra cervical screening tests.

If you have changes to the cells of the cervix you may be offered treatment for this.

Finding these changes early means we can prevent cancer developing in the future.

That's why cervical screening is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of cervical cancer.

If you're eligible get your smear booked today.

You can find out more by dropping in to see us at The University of Huddersfield tomorrow.

Are you due a cervical smear?

This is also known as a pap test, or pap smear.

It is a simple test which looks for viruses and abnormal cells which could turn in to cancer.

It is not a test for people with a cervix who have symptoms, it is used to detect changes in people with no symptoms.

If you haven't had your smear when it was due we would love to know why?

What is stopping you, and how can we help?

Here at the University Health Centre we aim to make sure our patients are offered an appointment with the right person, at the right time. The best person to assess and manage your symptoms may not be a doctor.

Our reception team are trained to ask you further information about your problem and they may refer you to the Community Pharmacy Consultation Service (CPCS).

Once you are referred to CPCS a qualified clinical pharmacist will ring you within 2 hours to discuss your problem. They may give you advice on self care and they may offer you over the counter medicines if needed. They can also refer you on to other services such as the opticians or A&E. In the rare cases it is needed they will contact us to arrange a GP appointment for you.

We have teamed up with .chemist and so far have had great feedback.

So if you get referred to a community pharmacist please be reassured that our team have decided this is the best professional to help you based on your symptoms.
