Just a quick update! I'm still not quite back, I've increased my hours in my other job and have taken on a secondment role (Sleep Specialist Nurse working with the Developmental Paediatrics Team!), which is super exciting but sadly not leaving me much time to juggle Counting Sheep and family life too... So I'm still not taking on any consultations at present but hope to be back to it in the not too distant future!

I'm taking a bit of time out over the summer, so will not be taking on any new clients for the moment 🩷

Lovely message to receive this morning! I've been working with this family since the beginning of February; this amazing little one has been going through cancer treatment including blood tranfusions and regular hospital stays so has needed a very slow, gentle approach with lots of adjusting for certain needs over the weeks and I'm so happy that she is now getting more quality sleep and her parents too! ❤️

And so my inspiration for Counting Sheep turns 8 tomorrow!! For all those out there in the thick of it right now, he used to wake every hour and would only settle with a feed and in bed with me for what felt like an eternity! Exhausted doesn't even come close! But now he can even sleep on a hard floor, under a blue whale, in a hall full of snoring people without stirring once! 😂

🤩 Hi everyone! Some of you might already know that I will be running the London Marathon this year in aid of WellChild. In order to run I need to reach my fundraising goal. I will be holding a raffle at the end of February and I am asking local businesses if they are able to donate a prize. I have already had some really generous donations from and lots more offers.

If you can spare anything please do let me know and tickets will be on sale for my followers very soon 🤩

We all know we sleep well after being out in the fresh air, and research backs this up, but do we do it enough? It seems such an easy way to encourage a good night sleep but the weather (and wow is it cold at the moment!), work or other daily commitments can make it hard to get outside as much as we might like. So as often as you can, grab those hats and gloves and head out into nature, the day light helps reinforce our circadian rhythm, and all that fresh air is great for higher oxygen levels, better circulation, and brain function, not to mention the boost to our mental health!

But if you’ve found you’ve been rushing between nursery and school drop offs, followed by a day in front of the computer and suddenly it’s dark and it’s the count down to bed time then all is not lost! Sleeping with the window open is a great way to ensure that our bedrooms have good air quality, which some studies have shown helps us sleep deeper and for longer. However, if it’s too cold for you right now (I have to admit my bedroom windows are firmly shut!) or you’re on the ground floor or right next to the A27, you can always try Stoßlüften! Something I’ve always done, but only recently learned there’s actually a term for it! A German practice (translated as shock ventilation), where you open the windows wide for 5-10 minutes with a view to improve indoor air quality, promoting health and saving energy. A great time to do this is before going up to bed to improve their air quality in your sleeping environment, you can even pop a hot water bottle in your little one’s bed to warm it up first, what greater way to get that wriggly little one leaping into their bed?!

As it's been a while, thought I'd reintroduce myself and tell you a little more about me and what I offer.

I'm Soma, the founder of Counting Sheep Sleep Coaching and I'm a mum of 2 boys. My background is in Nursing and Health Visiting, which means I'm very active in keeping up todate and ensuring my advice is evidence based. I offer a holistic service where I will take any other developmental or medical issues into consideration (fussy eating? Toilet training? We can chat about that too!) My interest in sleep began about 11 years ago but it became a real passion after I had my first sleep thief!

Sam will be turning 8 soon, but those nights of hourly waking are still very fresh in my mind!! We co-slept and he was feeding hourly until 14 months when I felt I needed to change things.

In 2021 Paddy came long. He has very different sleep needs to Sam, he dropped his day time nap really early and definitely needs less sleep over night! He wasn't ready to night wean as early as Sam either and needed a much slower approach.

Every family is different just as every child is so rather than offering blanket "solutions", I will work with you to unpick what your child's needs are as well as what's important to you. Sadly I won't promise you a quick fix (although often this does happen!) But I will support you to find ways to manage your families sleep that is realistic, sustainable and will provide long lasting improvement while considering your child's develomental needs.

Sadly, society is not set up to meet the needs of babies and their families, and we often feel we have to achieve the impossible on limited sleep.

For younger babies my role is mostly managing expectations, helping you understand normal infant sleep, having confidence in understanding YOUR babies sleep cues and ever-changing needs and development and finding ways to help you prioritise your rest and encourage healthy sleep habits. If things are still tricky as they hit toddlerhood, this is where we can be a bit more creative!

It's important to find someone who is the right fit for you, so I'm always more than happy to have a free no obligation chat to see if I'm the right sleep consultant for you

But still busily working behind the scenes, really lovely to meet Josie at .natural.sensory.nook this week and excited to start some workshops here in the new year, it's a really lovely space and the groups sound amazing (my smallest definitely enjoyed exploring)!

About me

Hi, I’m Soma (and that’s Sam!), I’ve been a Registered Nurse since 2010 and in 2013 qualified as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse and as part of my job have supported many tired parents with their children’s sleep which has always been a special interest for me. In 2016 my son was born and I got a real insight into how all those parents I’d given advice to are really feeling! Sam was the ultimate sleep thief. I co-slept as he made it very clear from day one he needed to be close to me at all times, he breastfed mostly hourly (anything from 45 mins was normal for us, a 2 hour stretch of sleep was a rare treat!) up until the age of 14 months. I had returned to work when he was 11 months old, working night shifts with no childcare in the daytime meant absolutely no sleep for me… it became apparent our normal was no longer sustainable for me. Without my knowledge and experience I’m not sure how long we would have continued like this for, however, within 4 nights he went from hourly waking and feeding to sleeping through from 7pm-7am and has continued ever since (bar the odd night when big monkey falls out of reach). Unfortunately, life today often means returning to work sooner than we’d like and having to fit this and everyday life in with a child who doesn’t sleep can be totally exhausting, but it is possible to find gentle and responsive ways to help your child settle to sleep and learn to return to sleep without you when they wake in the night. Every child is different, just as every parent is different so the techniques used will be different for each family. I love getting to know families and finding solutions that work for their individual child that parents feel confident and happy to put into place – there is nothing better than hearing their child is now sleeping through the night and the difference this has made to their lives! So, Counting Sheep has been a long talked about dream and I’m really excited I’m finally getting to do it! If you think I can help your family, then do get in touch.
