IRON RAFT was born out of the urge to explore the world and experience adventure on a budget. We are a small, independent, UK business dedicated to making packrafting in the UK affordable for everyone. A packraft is a small, inflatable boat that can pack up small enough and is light enough to carry in your backpack. This small pack size and minimal weight make packrafts the perfect companion for h

ikers, bikers and all sorts of other adventurers wanting more freedom to explore. The only downside with packrafting in the UK is the price. With no UK based manufacturers and almost all commercial brands priced between £500 and £800 plus shipping and often import tax on top, off the shelf packrafts are certainly not cheap.

As river levels fluctuate with weather changes, it's crucial to stay informed and prepared. Lower levels can reveal obstacles which has potential to cause damage to your packraft or even halt your progress.

Always check the latest river conditions before heading out, and choose routes that match your experience level. Safety first ensures your adventure stays fun and unforgettable!

Paddle smart, stay aware, and respect the river.

Packrafting vs Kayaking

"Feels soooo good to be back in the packraft. It maybe slower, but the overall flexibility to navigate through a journey in my opinion is far better than being in a kayak." - Going Solo Adventures by Paul Everitt

Paul has been paddling for over 2 months along the coastline around Lofoten and down to Brønnøysund, he has explored the world of both kayaking and packrafting during his ventures. He has documented the whole trip over on his page and we can't wait to see what he gets up to next.

Packrafting on Sea Water: Essential Maintenance Tips

To ensure your packraft endures the salty waves and serves you well for many more trips, follow these maintenance tips:

1) Rinse Thoroughly: Always rinse your packraft with fresh water after being in the sea to remove salt and sand. Using a gentle dish soap helps keep your boat thoroughly clean from grit clean and prevent the spread of species across waterways that could hurt the ecosystems.

2) Dry Completely: Make sure your packraft is fully dry before storing it to avoid mold and mildew.

3) Regular Inspections: Look out for any signs of damage like punctures and address them promptly.

4) For TIZIP use, clean and lubricate the zipper. Start with a small brush, such as a used toothbrush, and use warm soapy water for tougher cleaning and allow the zipper to dry before closing it. The TIZIP-zipper should always move smoothly and effortlessly. If your zipper is difficult to operate or feels sticky, it requires lubrication. Before applying lubricant, ensure that the zipper chain is clean and avoid applying lubricant directly to the chain, as it may attract sand.

5) Proper Storage: Store your packraft in a cool, dry place, and avoid prolonged compression. Hanging or loosely rolling your packraft is better than placing it in a bag.

🐾 Packrafting with Dogs

Taking your furry friend on a packrafting adventure can be an unforgettable experience but are you prepared for both a safe and comfortable adventure? Things to consider:

1) A high-quality life jacket, a sturdy harness and leash to secure your dog, as even strong swimmers can tire quickly in open water.
2) Bring a non-slip mat for added comfort and grip, remember although packrafts are stable the floor material will be unfamiliar to your dog.
3) Pack essentials like extra water, snacks, and a first aid kit to keep your dog hydrated and energised throughout the journey.

🌟 Important Tip: Plan short trips initially to gauge your dog’s comfort and behavior on the water. Gradually increase the duration as they become more comfortable.

The combination of caffeine and nature creates an invigorating experience, enhancing your connection with the environment.

But what about a coffee pit stop? Packrafting is known for its versatility in adventures, opening access to remote areas or merging multi-discipline activities to explore new routes. However, the options with packrafting does not stop there.

Picture this: Waking up on a summery Saturday morning and escaping the hustle and bustle of city life with a gentle paddle downstream to discover a quiet country pub or coffee shop to enjoy a fresh cup of Joe.

Sometimes the best adventures are the local, spontaneous ones! Share your favourite coffee for others to discover in the comments.

Camping is a huge part of packrafting, it's important to make sure you’re fully prepared if you want to have a good experience.

The thing is, when you’re packrafting, you can be pretty limited on space, so it won’t be the glamping experience many people are used to.

Bikerafting, a combination of cycling and packrafting, traces its origins back to the 1980s when adventurous cyclists began to seek ways to extend their explorations beyond the confines of traditional roads and trails. Early pioneers of this hybrid sport were inspired by the desire to reach remote and inaccessible places that required crossing bodies of water.

The concept took hold as packrafting technology advanced, making the rafts more lightweight and portable. This allowed cyclists to carry the rafts on their bikes and easily transition from riding to paddling.

By the 2000s, bikerafting had gained more visibility, with notable expeditions and documentaries showcasing the sport's potential. Today, bikerafting continues to evolve, it represents the epitome of versatility and exploration, allowing adventurers to traverse diverse landscapes seamlessly.

Checked vs Carry On Luggage?

Although our packrafts provide accessible adventure on our doorstep, sometimes we want to book a flight and explore a waterway further from home. But it's important to consider the protocols on this.

The beauty of our packrafts is the lightweight design meaning weight is not a restriction whilst flying however the paddles are where you need to be careful. According to airlines you must pack your paddles in checked luggage. The length of your paddle can also be an issue of restriction with BA for example limiting paddles to 190 cm in length. An easy solution to this is the consideration of a 4 piece paddle such as the RUK Sport Moray 4 piece paddle that breaks down to 60cm in length.

🚣‍♂️ How Long Do Packrafts Last? 🚣‍♀️

Here’s what you need to know!

Factors Affecting Lifespan:

1️⃣ Material: Durable materials like TPU-coated nylon ensure long-lasting performance.
2️⃣ Usage: Frequent use in rough conditions may wear it out faster, while gentle use extends its life.
3️⃣ Maintenance: Regular cleaning, proper storage, and timely repairs keep your packraft in top shape.

Tips to Extend Lifespan:

💦Clean After Use: Rinse with fresh water to remove dirt and debris.
📦Proper Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
🧐Regular Inspections: Check for wear and tear, and repair any damage promptly.

With the right care, your packraft can be a reliable partner for years of exploration and adventure! 🌊

At Iron Raft we care about the longevity of your packrafts, therefore our Paddle Ready models are made from TPU coated Nylon material. These TPU coated fabrics are UV-resistant, abrasion-resistant, tear-resistant, resistant to low temperature and ageing. Additionally, the seams are designed with strength in mind due to the fact that they have been both sewn and heat welded together.

Essential Packrafting Etiquette

As packrafting adventures are on a rise with the summer in full swing, together lets ensure a fun and respectful experience for all:

1️⃣ Respect Nature

Leave no trace. Avoid disturbing wildlife allow a respectful distance from animals and be aware of nests in the riverbanks and loch shores. Lastly stick to designated paths and launch sites when accessing your packrafting routes.

2️⃣ Yield to Others

Give way to larger vessels and faster watercraft. Always be aware of your surroundings and courteous to other paddlers.

3️⃣ Minimise Noise

Keep noise levels down to enjoy the tranquility of nature and respect others seeking a peaceful adventure.

4️⃣ Stay Right

On narrow waterways, keep to the right to allow others to pass safely on the left unless otherwise stated on signage.

5️⃣ Communicate Clearly

Use hand signals or verbal communication to indicate your intentions to other paddlers, especially in busy areas.

6️⃣ Safety First

Always wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) and carry essential safety gear. Know your limits and avoid risky situations.

7️⃣ Group Awareness

When paddling in a group, stay close together and communicate regularly to ensure everyone’s safety and reduce disturbances to others and the environment.

8️⃣ Launch and Land Considerately

Be mindful of others waiting to launch or land. Move quickly and efficiently to avoid congestion.

Following these simple guidelines helps protect the environment and ensures a positive experience for everyone on the water.

“There’s something magical about Scottish bothies that I can’t quite put a finger on. To an outsider, they present a rather dull, damp, cold and gloomy form of accommodation. But after a few hours on the water, slightly damp, tired, and with a rumble in the stomach, these mysterious shacks soon turn into a warm, safe haven – filled with the flickering glow of fire and candlelight.”

In February earlier this year we took two days, a couple of Iron Rafts and a healthy selection of snacks on a bothy adventure. Have a read of the full article on Iron Raft’s site (link in bio).

Sometimes it's sh*t, sometimes it's not.

Yesterday was a tough paddle, I battled strong currents and a constant head wind.

The reward was worth it.

I actually thrive in head winds and choppy conditions. My mind focuses and I push through... however when it's calm, I can get super lazy and just want to nap

This packraft has definitely been challenged and tested. This is definitely the right boat for this journey - IRON RAFT
