Today marks the birthday of the great BRENDAN BEHAN (1923-1964) – a poet, playwright and author, Brendan Behan is one of Ireland’s most famous writers and personalities.

Brendan Behan was born in Dublin on the 9th February 1921. Born into a strongly republican family, his mother was a close friend of Michael Collins and his uncle wrote the words for the Irish National Anthem.

A member of Fianna Éireann, the young organisation of the Irish Republican Army, Brendan Behan was arrested in Liverpool in 1939 and sentenced to three years’ in a Borstal for embarking on a mission to blow up the docks there. He was arrested again in 1942 for attempting to shoot a policeman.

Following his release in 1946, he began a writing career that would produce some of the most famous works of Irish literature ever produced. His play The Quare Fellow, was premiered in Dublin in 1954 and transferred to London and Broadway. His autobiographical Borstal Boy was an international best seller.
Behan was a heavy drinker all his life, and this, compounded by diabetes, resulted in his early death on the 20th March 1964. He was 41 years old. Brendan Behan is buried in Glasnevin cemetery.
