Researching the coastal bars of Belgium for our Beer on The Waterfront Tour, Wednesday 26 June – Sunday 30 June 2024, I came across this lovely looking bar and I was thinking of taking the group there. Someone may need a word with the owners that this name may not be funny to Flemish/French speakers, but is excessively funny to Brits. This is my replica of famous WW1 tank, Fray Bentos, darkly nicknamed by the men who went inside. On 22 August 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) it ditched in mud, near Pond Farm right on the battlefront. The nine man crew were stuck in this little tin box, being shot at for three days. Our Beer & Battlefields Tour 2024 will follow the journey of Fray Bentos, and the other tanks at Passchendaele and find out what happened to them. We will have a special visit to the private WW1 museum of Pond Farm, which is still there, and to the amazing full size replica tank built in the barn by a remarkable young man who lives there.
