Just over a week to go before our next film The Peanut Butter Falcon (starring Shia LeBeouf and Zack Gottsagan). From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine, it's a coming of age adventure tale, about a young man with Downs Syndrome who runs away chasing his dream to become a professional wrestler!

We're welcoming the brilliant Hands and Voices Choir to give us a special performance before the film! Hands and Voices was set up to help people with learning and communication difficulties take part in music and express themselves creatively. Hands & Voices is led by it's members with a vision that everyone should be equally valued, celebrated and challenged.

With funding from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation we can bring this event to you for only £3! Visit Film at the Folk Hall for tickets. The licensed bar will open from 18:30 so you can catch up with friends before the event!

Thanks to everyone who joined yesterday as our beloved New Earswick Folk Hall was transformed into a school of Witchcraft and Wizardry!

Hands down the best event I've been to at the Folk Hall! The team somehow organised wand crafting, potion making and an owl display followed by yummy food, butter beer and then Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone!

So much hard work went into it by the staff and a big thanks to New Earswick Resident Forum for helping make it happen. Had a fab time being involved and if you missed out then keep your eyes peels as I'm hoping we can do it all again next year!

Happy Halloween! ❤️

WHOAAAA-OH I'M AN ALIEN...

Come and enjoy this little gem of a film with us at our beautiful little venue, Film at the Folk Hall! All ticket sales go to Stonewall charity and if finances are a barrier there's a free option to book online too. 😘

"It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile,
Be yourself no matter what they say."

Next months film is about Quentin Crisp, who Sting called a hero and dedicated his song, 'Englishman in New York' to.

"Quentin's a friend of mine and someone I admire greatly because I think he's one of the most courageous people I've ever met. He has lived his life in an individual way in a society that is vicious and malevolent. But he is a hero in a feminine way. So that's a song about the feminine qualities than can exist in man without being negative."

The guys over at Kirklees Local TV filmed some of our Black History Month special last month and here it is, including interviews with some of the guests, audience and even ME! 😍

Part of the reason I started Pop Up York was a determination to use whatever platform I could to get powerful films out into communities where they could bring us all together. With lots of help from some great people, I think we did just that! ❤️ Be sure to check out Windrush: The Years After - A Community Legacy on Film and keep your eyes peeled for a Christmas film announcement soon!

What a night last night was! 🤩 Thank you to everyone who supported this. Especially to Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust who providing the funding so we could make it a charitable event.

The film Windrush: The Years After - A Community Legacy on Film is an honest and heartfelt account of West Yorkshire life from the point of view a community of Caribbean people, invited to start a life here over 50 years ago. They arrived with hopes and dreams, only to be met with discrimination and alienation. Half a century later and we've come a long way, but we still have so much work to do. The film is doing the rounds but we'll let you know when it's released.

The guests, Louise and Milton were incredible. They stuck around answering questions and chatting to people for over an hour and we're so grateful for their time and for sharing their work with us.

The food from Mai’s Caribbean Cuisine was delicious and the feedback was all so positive. Gregory and Marjorie, thanks for being so efficient and bringing along so much food and serving it all with a smile. 🍲

While the film and subject matter was tough at times, events like this show we can celebrate and learn together at the same time as acknowledging our difficult past. You showed us last night that you're keen for events like this, so keep your eyes out on here for more in the future.

The event was all captured on film by Kirklees Local TV so we will share more with you when we can!

Our second special guest on Friday night will be Louise Muhammad who is the Black History Month coordinator for Kirklees Council BAME Network. She has coordinated and facilitated various local community events and projects since the mid-90’s linked to BHM and ‘Cultural Enrichment’ for Black African Caribbean Communities
in Huddersfield.

More recently Louise has become a coordinating member of the Kirklees Council ‘Windrush Week’ steering group-working in partnership with other colleagues across the council as well as external organisations. Louise’s driving passion is to bring ‘Black, African, Caribbean’ stories, narratives, contributions and content into the mainstream. She understands the sentiments of the
infamous quote ‘Until Lions write their own history, tales of hunting will always glorify the hunter’

Louise was interviewed as part of the docufilm ‘Windrush the Years After’ and ‘briefly’ shared some of her thoughts. She is very much interested in creative solutions and not merely regurgitating the plethora of issues and problems plaguing local Black communities.

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH: A LIFE ON OUR PLANET

What a true legend Sir David is. ❤️ 94 years old and still taking responsibility for reminding us to work with our world instead of pillaging it.

In this, what he refers to as his witness statement, he doesn't hold back. We're shown the stark damage to our planet over the 5 decades he has graced our screens.

With the world in its current state, I couldn't help but feel the comparison that we are to this earth what the virus is to us. Something we didn't ask for, something which has spread too quickly to contain and wreaked havoc on its host. One of the few things in a generation which will need a global effort in order to survive.

It's not all doom and gloom of course, in his trademark style the beauty of the natural world takes centre stage to remind us what is at stake, and there's some clear examples of how we can do this. Advice from the planets' grandad that there is hope if we just learn how to work together.

He's released this into cinemas ahead of its 4th October release and with a 30 min Q and A with Michael Palin after the credits, it's easily worth the pennies. Vue cinema seems to be cheapest tickets with one more showing this Saturday! ❤️🌍🎬

In this unique feature documentary, titled David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet, the celebrated naturalist reflects upon both the defining moments of his...

The rumours are true! Borat 2 already completed and on its way - Niiice!

Not only has a surprise follow-up to Sacha Baron Cohen's 2006 mockumentary been shot in secret, it's reportedly already been screened for a handful of movie industry insiders. And if reports are anything to go by, the sequel will be just as offensive and scandalous as the first film.

I mean it - You really can!

While my beloved Pop Up York project has been on an unexpected hiatus, I've committed to addressing my anxiety head on this year as well as doing my bit to reduce the stigma around open discussion on men's mental health.

I've qualified as a coach and done a series of videos on how to fight the Imposter in us and continue to aim for growth despite self-limiting beliefs. I'll be discussing life, the universe and everything, so if any of this sounds of interest I'd love it if you joined me on Instagram...

So Tenet at IMAX happened last night and was insane! Here's my spoilerless review for anyone who is wondering whether to go and see it...

I've just about recovered from it now. Brilliant and bonkers. Captivating and complicated. Possibly a touch too much going on at times, but only in that I'm already looking forward to the 4th viewing when I can get my head round it fully. Yet again, Christopher Nolan writes and directs with an assumption of the intelligence and commitment of his audience. I am sure this film will push that to the limit for some though and I do expect to see some dodgy critics reviews as a result.

Admittedly not everyone goes to the cinema committed to that level of concentration, but surely we know what to expect from Nolan after Memento, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk - he's been messing with our experience of time for 20 years now and I've loved every second of it. Similarly to Inception, which took me a few goes to fully appreciate the depth of the narrative, Nolan goes all out to rapidly immerse us in a new reality. Prepare to shout WHAT?! at the screen a fair few times while you get settled in! The pay off is worth the effort and will no doubt get more rewarding with each viewing.

Knowing the time, effort and cost he puts in to his set pieces and to avoid CGI (Tenet has less CGI than most romantic comedies) and his continued love for filming with the cumbersome 70mm IMAX cameras (most of this film is in IMAX) do spend the extra pennies and see it at our sparkly new Cineworld if you can. With a jaw dropping score to boot it's all so gargantuan, I challenge you to fall asleep during this film (no Hans Zimmer this time as he's working on another project, but Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson literally smashes it over this movie!)

John David Washington is as brilliant as ever and this role will hopefully ensure he firmly grabs the torch passed from his legendary dad, Denzel. I couldn't fully accept Branagh as a Russian Oligarch but he has some good scenes nonetheless.

There are a couple of times where volume and background noise did make it hard to fully understand what people were saying at quite key points which was frustrating. Or perhaps we just need to watch it backwards to understand, which I'll no doubt do when it comes out on dvd. 😂

If you're into Nolan and want to experience the most Nolany Nolan-ness you've ever knowln then look Nol further. IMAX Tenet is for you!
