Our little town of Rye is perfectly situated for a weekend of vineyard visits at some of the countries most beautiful wine makers.

Both Merrythought Cottage and The Brontë Wing at The Apothecary are centrally located in the heart of Rye Citadel. With easy access to the train, plenty of car parks and local taxi companies you are all set for plenty of visits to taste superb Sussex wines.

Our 3 favourite seaside trips when staying in Rye.

1. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a stunning walk from Rye to Winchelsea taking in sea views, beautiful marshlands with twitching huts, breathtaking wildlife and of course the Mary Stanford lifeboat house!

2. Hastings Old Town is a gorgeous pebbled beach complete with crazy golf course (home to the Worlds Crazy Golf championships), amusement arcades, fun fair and shopping streets - there’s something for all the family!

3. Camber Sands beach stretching over 3 miles long, and home to the only sand dune system in East Sussex. Popular with sunseekers, kite surfers and historians with low tide showing the deck of the brig ‘Avon’ which sank in 1892.

Nice to see blue skies creeping through again in Rye today.

Just across the other side of St Mary’s Church outside Merrythought Cottage lies the Gun Garden.

This is an observation deck set in-front of the Ypres (Wipers) Tower and has a battery of cannons facing out to sea.

The views over the river Rother and across to the sea and Romney Marsh are well worth a visit while staying with us at Merrythought Cottage or The Brontë Wing at The Apothecary!

The lounge at The Brontë Wing at The Apothecary is one of our favourite rooms.

High ceilings, comfortable designer sofas and an electric fire all add to the comfort of this beautiful Georgian property.

The highlight is of course the large original curved window on the corner, overlooking Rye High Street and the marshes in the distance.

Just a 10-15 min drive from our Rye cottages is the wonderful

Pop in for a walk around the vineyards with a glass of Blanc de Blancs overlooking Brede Valley and take a stroll through the vineyards.

Alternatively wine tastings are pre-bookable Weds-Sat weekly with various options available. We LOVE the ‘Wine and Cheese Tasting Experience’ - 4 wines and 4 cheeses for just £28pp

RYE BONFIRE!

Rye bonfire is always one of the biggest nights in the town with a big parade walking through the High Street, Rye fire breathing dragon and a huge bonfire!

You’ll be hard pressed to find a better view of the parade than from our corner window at overlooking the parade route!

If you’re coming to stay with us at Bayeux Cottage this Summer we can highly recommend a stunning Sunday roast just a 10 min drive out of Battle.

We tried out the mixed roast - huge portions, great service and it was absolutely delicious!

This is easily my favourite room in Merrythought Cottage. The dimmer lights make it easy to lay back in the big deep bath with a book and a glass of wine!

The digital shower controls and bath filler make this room feel so modern, even though it’s in a grade II listed cottage!
