International Women's Day, or IWD for short, evolved from the labour movement to become a United Nations-recognized annual observance.
The seeds of change were sown in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter work hours, higher pay, and the opportunity to vote. The Socialist Party of America established the first National Woman's Day a year later.
Clara Zetkin, a communist activist and proponent of women's rights, was the one who proposed the establishment of a worldwide day. She presented her proposal at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910 – and the 100 women in attendance, representing 17 countries, unanimously approved.
In 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland observed the first International Women's Day. Since the centennial was commemorated in 2011, this year marks the 111th anniversary.
The day became official in 1975, when the United Nations began commemorating it.
International Women's Day has evolved into a time to commemorate how far women have come in society, politics, and theeconomy, while the day's political beginnings imply that rallies and strikes are organised to raise awareness of persistent inequality.
It was not formally established until 1917, during a wartime strike by Russian women demanding "food and peace"; four days into the strike, the tsar was forced to resign, and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
The strike began on 8 March, which became International Women's Day.
According to the International Women's Day website, the IWD colours are purple, green, and white.

On March 4, the World's biggest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas will depart from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on its first voyage, a seven-day Caribbean itinerary.
It has a capacity of 6,988 passengers and weighs 236,857 gross tonnes. It measures 362m long and 64m wide and includes more than 20 dining locations and 11 bars.
Royal Caribbean describes it as “a private experience like no other, featuring world-class dining, a new sun deck for unparalleled ocean views, a private lounge and restaurant, and much more.”
It will also have the tallest waterslide at sea (the Ultimate Abyss), a casino, a carousel, a Flowrider surf machine, a jogging track, a zip line, and outdoor cinema.
Entertainment promises to be on another level, too, with both an open-air AquaTheater and an ice-skating rink for some 100 performers.
The Antonov An-225 is the world's largest aircraft. According to data from ch-aviation.com, UR-82060 is 33.2 years old, having first flown on December 21st, 1988. The plane can turn heads wherever it flies, thanks partly to its enormous size, three jet engines on each wing, and an impressive number of wheels. Now, the aircraft may be gone for good.

Rhapsody of the Seas is a Royal Caribbean Vision-class cruise ship, which started with a Texas home port and then repositioned in 2007. During this world trip she travelled through the South Pacific to Australia before moving on to Asia. She has since repositioned several times between the South America and the US, to Australia, Asia and the Mediterranean.
The Rhapsody isn't the biggest or flashiest Royal Caribbean cruise ship, but she does have a lot to offer. She has some fantastic amenities on board including swimming pools, a full-service spa, several bars and restaurant and a rock-climbing wall.
Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft has been spotted in a new retro-styled livery at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS), France.
The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, registration code A7-BAC, is 13.6 years old and entered service in August 2008, according to Planespotters.net.
The fresh retro-style livery is similar to Qatar Airways’ original livery when the airline was first founded. The repainted Boeing 777 features Qatar Airways’ classic burgundy colors and oryx on the tail. The aircraft engines are also adorned with the words '25 years of Excellence', a nod to the carrier's years in service.
New Norwegian low-cost airline Flyr is to operate its first UK route to Edinburgh airport from Oslo before Easter.
Three flights a week have been scheduled for the year-round service, which starts on April 8.
Flyr began operations last year and will use Boeing 737-800 aircraft on the Scottish connection.

Day 1, 2: Los Angeles, CA
Arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), pick your car up and proceed to your hotel. You will have a chance to have a first look at Los Angeles and will settle in at your hotel for 2 nights. Nicknamed “the city of angels”, Los Angeles is known for its cinema, chic neighbourhoods, celebrities, legendary beaches, and Palm trees, but the city is equally renowned for its museums and shops. Los Angeles offers you all the choices you can imagine.

Day 3: Laughlin, NV
Today, drive toward Laughlin, NV. Located on the southernmost tip of Nevada, along the Colorado River, where Nevada, California, and Arizona meet, Laughlin is now a major tourist destination for gambling and water sports. Did you know that the early town consisted of a motel and bar that catered to gold and silver miners? Welcome to the West! Distance to destination: 282 miles.

Day 4: Grand Canyon NP, AZ
Leave Laughlin behind today and drive toward the spectacular Grand Canyon, a superb geological phenomenon. This is most certainly one of the highlights of your trip. Walk along the South Rim to see one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring wonders in the world. The Grand Canyon is the result of millions of years of wind and water erosion. It is an endless expanse of shapes, colours and impenetrable shadows. The Colorado River flows over a mile below the canyon rim. Distance to destination: 207 miles.

Day 5: Monument Valley, UT
Drive along the scenic Desert View Drive with a stop at the Desert View Watchtower. Modelled after ancient Puebloan watchtowers, the Watchtower at Desert View features murals by Hopi artist Frank Kabotie. You will have the chance to climb the stairs to the top for an outstanding view of the Canyon and the surrounding areas. Leave for Monument Valley, where you will find yourself surrounded by dark red hills. Visit of this imposing area where numerous westerns have been filmed. This 25-mile-long and 16-mile-wide desert plain overflows with gigantic sandstone monolithic structures rising high above the valley. Distance to destination: 175 miles.

Day 6: Page, AZ
Page is your getaway to Lake Powell, an artificial lake created by the damming of the Colorado River, and Antelope Canyon. Continue your daily exploration with a visit of Horseshoe Bend, a canyon formed in the shape of a horseshoe by the Colorado River. The overlook is 1,280 metres above sea level and the Colorado River is at 975 metres above sea level making it a breath-taking 305 metre drop. Distance to destination: 125 miles.

Day 7: Bryce Canyon NP, UT
Depart Page this morning and drive toward Bryce. The scenery is beautiful, throughout the Dixie National Forest. En route, make a stop in Kanab. Locals refer to Kanab as ‘Little Hollywood’ due to its history as a filming location for western movies and television series such as Daniel Boone, Gunsmoke, and The Lone Ranger. Bryce Canyon, one of the most fascinating natural parks of Utah, will be your next stop. The Mormons discovered this site in the 19th century. The dazzling shapes and shades of the memorable pink cliffs constantly vary from dawn to dusk. Distance to destination: 150 miles.

Day 8, 9: Las Vegas, NV
The drive to Las Vegas sees a mandatory stop at Zion National Park, the oldest park in Utah; this Canyon will impress you with cathedral shaped rocks, some of which are more than 900 metre high. There is also a great diversity of plant and animal life due to the park’s unique geography. You will then go from the calm and serenity of the parks to the lights and extravagance of the legendary city of Las Vegas. Oasis lost in the desert of Nevada, Las Vegas is the city where luxury and entertainment are at its finest as the lights, games, glitz, and stars shine throughout the night. Stroll down Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as ‘the strip’. Each hotel and casino has a distinctly different theme and all are wondrous displays. Take a trip up to the top of the Stratosphere hotel tower, the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. Enjoy dinner at the Top of the World, or simply admire the view from the observation deck. Distance to destination: 263 miles.
