Visit the sites associated with their battles. We will visit the areas where they encamped and visit and discuss the areas they fought. With your ideas and wishes we can design a tour that allows you to walk in their footsteps, see where they along with their pals fought and commemorate their memory at the memorials and CWGC Cemeteries associated with their battles.
Commemorative School Tours & Group Tours
As with all our Group Tours you are involved in creating the itinerary for your Battlefield Study Tour from the outset. I you would like to discuss and understand a unit or follow the route taken by former member of your group or students of your school, we will model your tour around the sites they were stationed and where they fought.
Our expert guide will use his 30 years of military experience to ensure that you have a full understanding the battles through the eyes of the soldiers who fought there. We will introduce your group or school to personnel letters home and discuss individual soldiers’ experiences. We will discuss trench art and poetry that the men involved turned to past their time and tell stories in the trenches.
Educationally, the most valuable battlefield trips available are where the itinery spreads the programme over 3 or 4 days. More time allows for a more comforting trip allowing more time to be spent at each setting visited. Alongside the learning experience, we ensure that visitors have time to experience some of the culture of the local area they will be visiting in a social and comfortable manner.
Commemorate with a Battlefield Tour designed for you, by you!
We don’t design your tour, you do! Your tour is designed using your inspirations to create itineraries that put specific battle sites in perspective of the larger conflict. The sites we stop at, and the order in which we visit at them, are selected by you, for their significance to you personally or to the battle or campaign we are discussing. At each area you will be briefed concisely why the precise site is significant and what occurred there.
Your accommodation is chosen whilst liaising with you as you decide what is the most important for you. The hotels location, town or city centre, convenience for the sites, ambience or history as some are on the battlefields and were involved in battles. We also organise meals for the group in places selected for their relevance to the tour. It is extremely evocative to take dinner looking out over the Cloth Hall in Ypres or have lunch in the cellars where the 'Wipers Times' was printed!
Your own CBT guide, who served over 30 years with the British Army, will lead you through the accounts of each battle and aim to put you in the position of the men who fought there. Your guide has a situational depth of knowledge, he is extremely enthusiastic to explain and discuss the site you are visiting and he has the ability to communicate the story in an interesting and engrossing way. Your guide is a member of the prestigious Guild of Battlefield Guides.
Knowledge is power but knowledge sharing is empowerment! This is something we believe strongly at CBT because despite the fact we may be visiting the same areas each time, we never presume we know every grain of information. We actively encourage guests to interject their own stories and knowledge about the site we are at or their family stories. We always aim to ensure that we can visit particular family graves or memorials close to the tour routes if requested so individual an conduct their own acts of commemoration.
Once back from the tour we usually find ourselves carrying out further research to gain answers to questions from guests that we could not answer, or information shared by guests at the time.
Flexibility is the keyword on our tours, we use your itineraries we design with your instructions as a handrail but usually can be altered to befit what you want to achieve. Dates and the type of accommodation used are always subject to availability but we always aim to be flexible to ensure we can oblige your dates and your budget.
Military Battlefield Studies
Battlefield studies were developed by Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, Chief of Staff of the Prussian Army, early in the nineteenth century. A Battlefield Study is an educational method that, bringing the historical conflict to life, aims to be an influential process of delivering historical lessons to the present-day, planning for military operations of most modern armies
Battlefield studies are classed as formal training and education, which are designed to provide the fundamental education to military units and formations and are therefore directed by the chain of command. We work closely with the chain of command to develop an itinery to ensure we deliver a battlefield study that meets expressed criteria
