Plastic waste is a huge ever-growing problem, harming wildlife and communities worldwide. Animals eating plastic suffer serious health issues, and the natural beauty of these areas is at risk. Recycling can be tricky, especially in safari areas in developing countries. 😅

But there are solutions, firstly in Zimbabwe and Zambia, Ele-Collection Enterprises tackles this problem by empowering local communities, protecting wildlife, and cutting carbon emissions (of plastic that would otherwise be burned or left) by turning plastic waste into building materials, products and even concrete. 👏

Tourism companies offering trips to these regions can support this by adding a plastic pledge to itineraries or bed-nights. This provides a great CSR project with real impact in your sold destination. 💚

We at Vumbua Africa use Plastic that is made from plants, not petroleum.

We through Water-to-Go supply our all our clients who book with us the only bioplastic water purifier bottle. Our bioplastic water bottles are made from carbon-sequestering sugarcane grown ethically and sustainably sourced.

Water-to-Go bioplastic bottles are truly sustainable. The top of the plant is removed and grows back in about 90 days. The harvested portion is used to make sugar.

The waste material from sugar production is then used to make the bioplastic water purifier bottles.

The waste product is recycled and used as fertilizer back on the sugarcane plants.

I highly recommend checking out the full Ele-Collection documentary featuring owner Simon Teede.

Vumbua Africa does self drive hire in Malawi.

All our vehicles come with: * unlimited mileage, * 90% insurance coverage with just a 10% excess, * 100% 3rd party insurance coverage within Malawi.

All hires come with a comprehensive vehicle handover, a credit card is required as well as a contactable phone number whilst you're travelling.

Charges may apply should you on or off-hire your vehicle from another location.

Due to Zambian restrictions, we are no longer able to start your hire from Zambia.

Our vehicles are however, eligible to cross borders with prior notification and border crossing clearance documents. Additional insurance extensions of $10.00 per day outside of Malawi may apply.

Each vehicle comes equipped with its very own picnic basket - Inside there is a flask, travel mugs, plates, a chopping board, bottle opener, matches, a sponge, a bread knife, cutlery, tea, coffee, powdered milk and sugar, a tea towel, a hand towel, a bag of cookies and a bag of sweets!

Self-driving across Malawi and Zambia is not only easy, it's exceptionally rewarding.

Malawian roads are simple to navigate across the country, though we may suggest it's a bit like a video game to avoid people, chickens, goats, bicycles, potholes and other traffic - It's certainly entertaining and no drive is a boring one!

Malawi is a lot more populated than Zambia, so your driving is never too remote across the 'Warm Heart of Africa'. You may need to engage 4 wheel drive in the rainy season through the game reserves, or up to Nyika Plateau, but most locations are easy enough to get to, even in a saloon vehicle during the summer months.

Zambia is a little different.

Zambia is split up between four major roads that run up and down the country and across in an almost square shape. The rest you might find, are dirt roads.
Many more remote locations are only accessible at certain times of the year and crossing into parks such as North Luangwa and Liuwa Plains requires a short ride across a river on a pontoon.

So whether you're going seriously off the beaten track in the heart of Zambia, or you're pottering across the Malawi landscape, our vehicles are equipped to take you where and for however long you wan to go for.

The beauty of hiring a car through us is you're never stranded. Our team of experts and our connections across the region mean we're able to help you while you're out on the road.

We offer a free of charge rescue and replacement service, a 24hr call line and guidance on your journey!

We also do self drive vehicle hire in Namibia & South Africa.

June marks the beginning of the dry season in many parts of Africa, making it an excellent time to visit several countries for wildlife viewing, outdoor adventures, and cultural experiences.

Here are some countries in Africa that are considered best to visit in June:

✅ KENYA
June is an ideal time to visit Kenya, especially for witnessing the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara. The weather is generally dry and cool, making it comfortable for safaris and other outdoor activities.

✅ TANZANIA
June is one of the best months to visit Tanzania for wildlife viewing, particularly in the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. The Great Migration typically moves into the western corridor of the Serengeti during this time.

✅ SOUTH AFRICA
June is winter in South Africa, offering dry weather and cooler temperatures, especially in the game reserves. It's an excellent time for safari experiences in destinations like Kruger National Park and Madikwe Game Reserve.

✅ BOTSWANA
June is the start of the dry season in Botswana, with clear skies and cooler temperatures. It's a great time to visit the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park for wildlife viewing and outdoor adventures.

✅ ZIMBABWE
June is an excellent time to visit Zimbabwe for wildlife viewing and exploring iconic attractions like Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, and Mana Pools National Park. The dry weather makes it easier to spot wildlife around water sources.

✅ NAMIBIA
June is one of the best months to visit Namibia, with clear skies and mild temperatures. It's an ideal time to explore attractions like Sossusvlei, Etosha National Park, and the Skeleton Coast.

27/04/2024

Today, the 27th April is Togo Independence Day, marking the country's independence from France in 1960.

Officially the Togolese Republic, Togo is a country in West Africa. The name comes from the language spoken by the local tribes, which means “land where lagoons lie.”

After WWII and the formation of the United Nations on the 24th October 1945 the two Togolands became United Nations trust territories (1946).

The British part was administered with the Gold Coast and became part of independent Ghana in 1957, but French Togoland remained administratively distinct from Dahomey (now Benin) and became independent as the Republic of Togo in 1960.

We wish all the people from Togo a Happy Independence day.

Travel Facts – GHANA

St George’s (Elmina Castle) Castle, is thought to be the first pre-fabricated building of European origin to have been built in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was built as a trading post by the Portuguese in 1482, and captured by the Dutch 150 years later in 1637 and became the headquarters of their West Indies Company for the following 250 years.

It was expanded when slaves replaced gold as the major object of commerce, with storerooms converted into dungeons. The informative tour (included in the entry fee) takes you to the grim dungeons, punishment cells, “Door of No Return” and the turret room where the British imprisoned the Ashanti king, Prempeh I, for four years. The Castle houses a small museum and guided tours are available. The stark beauty of the white-washed Castle walls contrast deeply with the dark history of this place.

The town of Elmina is a picturesque fishing town along Ghana’s coast, not far from Cape Coast. It is home to one of Ghana’s biggest attractions, St George’s Castle.

History

Renowned as the first major European construction in tropical Africa, St. George’s Castle, in the town of Elmina in the Central Region of Ghana. The site of the Castle was selected by Portuguese navigators, as it was advantageously located at the end of a narrow promontory, a stone’s throw away from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Benya River. The lee of the low headland provided an excellent natural harbour.

St George’s Castle or ‘Sao Jorge da Mina’, after the patron-saint of Portugal, as the castle was known to the Portuguese, afforded the Portuguese a trade monopoly in the area, with unrivalled access to the region’s gold.
The sheer magnitude of trade volumes resulted in labour challenges, as navies were unable to convey the large quantities of European goods to all markets. The importation of slaves from Benin in exchange for gold and ivory in the early 16th century was the identified solution. However, not long after, the influx of superior gold from Mexico into Europe caused gold prices to plummet rapidly. The economically distraught Portuguese were easily ousted from Elmina in 1637 by the Dutch.

The main Dutch trades were gold and slaves; they reconstructed the castle between 1770 and 1775. Until 1872, the castle served as the focal coordinating point for Dutch Gold Coast activities. In 1682, the author Jean Barbot described St. George’s Castle as having ‘no equal on all the coast of Guinea, with respect to beauty and strength.

On 6th April, 1872, the castle was ceded to the British. In recent years, it has served as Police Recruit Training Centre, a secondary school, and it is presently a historical museum. St. George’s Castle is featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
