"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it." – Sir David Attenborough
We’re super excited to announce our partnership with Ele-Collection Enterprises – a company transforming harmful waste into sustainable solutions to protect Africa’s wildlife, landscapes, and it’s people.
Every day, Ele-Collection Enterprises removes 300 kilograms of plastic waste from the bushveld with their women’s collection teams—amounting to 15 tonnes of plastic in 2024 , in just 3 months they recovered more ecosystem based plastic than any other organisation has done before.
Ele-Collection Enterprises is combatting an issue that is so big and extremely close to our hearts, so much so that we’re introducing an optional $20 per person plastic pledge onto all future Vumbua Africa bookings.
Ele-Collection Enterprises have also started setting up training and systems for collecting plastic from their partner Hotels, which is working smoothly. Additionally, Ele-Collection Enterprises is running a Clean Up Competition with several primary schools in the area, driving collection and education in these organisations.
With help from partnerships like ours, they are proving that plastic waste can be transformed into something valuable, creating jobs, supporting communities, as well as positioning Victoria Falls as Africa’s cleanest tourism destination.
In February, Ele-Collection Enterprises launched their first plastic bank, where community members will be able to deposit plastic waste for cash. This will ensure that all plastic now has a street value and provide a reliable source of income for those who need it most. They are also expanding into Hwange, extending their impact beyond Victoria Falls.
Injecting an alternative means of income through plastic collections and deposits into surrounding communities we are certain will also be a factor in curbing subsistence poaching in the region.
Knowing our support can drive real change really motivates us to keep pushing forward.

Plastic waste is a huge ever-growing problem, harming wildlife and communities worldwide. Animals eating plastic suffer serious health issues, and the natural beauty of these areas is at risk. Recycling can be tricky, especially in safari areas in developing countries. 😅
But there are solutions, firstly in Zimbabwe and Zambia, Ele-Collection Enterprises tackles this problem by empowering local communities, protecting wildlife, and cutting carbon emissions (of plastic that would otherwise be burned or left) by turning plastic waste into building materials, products and even concrete. 👏
Tourism companies offering trips to these regions can support this by adding a plastic pledge to itineraries or bed-nights. This provides a great CSR project with real impact in your sold destination. 💚
We at Vumbua Africa use Plastic that is made from plants, not petroleum.
We through Water-to-Go supply our all our clients who book with us the only bioplastic water purifier bottle. Our bioplastic water bottles are made from carbon-sequestering sugarcane grown ethically and sustainably sourced.
Water-to-Go bioplastic bottles are truly sustainable. The top of the plant is removed and grows back in about 90 days. The harvested portion is used to make sugar.
The waste material from sugar production is then used to make the bioplastic water purifier bottles.
The waste product is recycled and used as fertilizer back on the sugarcane plants.
I highly recommend checking out the full Ele-Collection documentary featuring owner Simon Teede.

Vumbua Africa does self drive hire in Malawi.
All our vehicles come with: * unlimited mileage, * 90% insurance coverage with just a 10% excess, * 100% 3rd party insurance coverage within Malawi.
All hires come with a comprehensive vehicle handover, a credit card is required as well as a contactable phone number whilst you're travelling.
Charges may apply should you on or off-hire your vehicle from another location.
Due to Zambian restrictions, we are no longer able to start your hire from Zambia.
Our vehicles are however, eligible to cross borders with prior notification and border crossing clearance documents. Additional insurance extensions of $10.00 per day outside of Malawi may apply.
Each vehicle comes equipped with its very own picnic basket - Inside there is a flask, travel mugs, plates, a chopping board, bottle opener, matches, a sponge, a bread knife, cutlery, tea, coffee, powdered milk and sugar, a tea towel, a hand towel, a bag of cookies and a bag of sweets!
Self-driving across Malawi and Zambia is not only easy, it's exceptionally rewarding.
Malawian roads are simple to navigate across the country, though we may suggest it's a bit like a video game to avoid people, chickens, goats, bicycles, potholes and other traffic - It's certainly entertaining and no drive is a boring one!
Malawi is a lot more populated than Zambia, so your driving is never too remote across the 'Warm Heart of Africa'. You may need to engage 4 wheel drive in the rainy season through the game reserves, or up to Nyika Plateau, but most locations are easy enough to get to, even in a saloon vehicle during the summer months.
Zambia is a little different.
Zambia is split up between four major roads that run up and down the country and across in an almost square shape. The rest you might find, are dirt roads.
Many more remote locations are only accessible at certain times of the year and crossing into parks such as North Luangwa and Liuwa Plains requires a short ride across a river on a pontoon.
So whether you're going seriously off the beaten track in the heart of Zambia, or you're pottering across the Malawi landscape, our vehicles are equipped to take you where and for however long you wan to go for.
The beauty of hiring a car through us is you're never stranded. Our team of experts and our connections across the region mean we're able to help you while you're out on the road.
We offer a free of charge rescue and replacement service, a 24hr call line and guidance on your journey!
We also do self drive vehicle hire in Namibia & South Africa.

OUR HISTORY:
Vumbua Africa UK Ltd was created from a love of Africa, its people, its history and fauna and flora.
The journey first began back in the mid 1990’s in Botswana with the birth of our logo and a company that supplied 4x4 equipment, tyres, undertook mainly Land Rover modifications, attended tyre breakdowns in the bush and ferried emergency supplies out to the bush camps. We also exported bush camp goods, 4x4 spares and equipment to Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique, in fact we supplied anything and everything a bush camp/safari operation may want or need.
In 2002 the company changed hands and a new Consultancy Company bearing the same logo was started in the UK with Africa as its speciality, doing business in Sierra Leone, Mali, Ghana, Guinea, Mauritania, Liberia, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Tanzania.
From this love of Africa, in 2020 came Vumbua Africa bearing the same logo that had taken it to success over 25 years before.
