According to legend the original castle was built by Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur, in the 5th century and may have been the site of his death when a well was poisoned by the Saxons ⚔

📺 Yorkshire Viewing!

There's a new TV series* starting on Channel 5 next week - Yorkshire Great & Small, which looks good & gave me an idea - to create a list of the 'Great & Small' in Yorkshire Dales. For example, the Greats might be well-known like Ribblehead Viaduct, Three Peaks, Swaledale hay meadows, Malham Cove... and the Smalls the smaller gems such as places where you can find the Mouseman's carvings, or hamlets like Thwaite, or Briggflatts Quaker meeting house... What would you put on the list of 'Yorkshire Greats and Small'?

The TV programme starts on Thursday, 12th Sept and features
Dan Walker and Helen Skelton. The first episode features the Yorkshire Dales, including Malham, Ribblehead Viaduct, Ingleborough, Grassington (Darrowby), Troller's Gill and Appletreewick.

🚧 Roadworks alert 🚧
For those of you staying in Outhgill over the school summer holidays- watch out for the road closure further up Mallerstang valley.
Unfortunately it does mean a bit of a diversion if you want to go in the Hawes direction- see map- we’d recommend the scenic ‘Tommy Road’ past Pendragon Castle that takes you over to the Sedburgh road ( near ‘Wharton Fell’ type on this map) Look out for wild ponies 👀 🐴 and great views

Great views from The Watercut!

How about a walk to explore The Eden Benchmarks - a series of ten site-specific, carved stone sculptures.

The sculptures are located on public paths along the River Eden from its source at Mallerstang to where it joins the sea at Rockcliffe, just north of Carlisle. The first sculpture in the series ‘Water Cut’ is located a few miles from the source of the river Eden, high up on the eastern side of the Mallerstang valley.
