Does this view look a little familiar to you?

Whilst not actually mentioned in the Domesday Book, Goathland has a recorded history as far back as the Norman Conquest. It’s believed that it used to be known as ‘Godelandia’ or Godeland which is Anglo Saxon for Good Land or God’s Land.

For many however it is better known as ‘Aidensfield’ in ‘Heartbeat’ - a hit ITV drama series which was filmed in Goathland from 1992 until 2010. Set in the 1960s, ‘Heartbeat’ was based upon the Constable series of novels written by Nicholas Rhea and starred many actors and actresses over the years from Nick Berry, Niamh Cusack, William Simons, Derek Fowlds and Tricia Penrose to David Lonsdale, Gwen Taylor and Geoffrey Hughes.

For Harry Potter fans, it’s where Hogsmeade Station is located from the first film in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Goathland Station, possibly one of the most charming and characterful stations along the heritage line of the North York Moors Railway inspires a real feeling of magic on every visit.

Follow us, as we dive deeper into the history of our idyllic village and share what we feel, makes it such a special place to experience.

What’s the one thing that hasn’t changed in Goathland over the last 100 years?

Raising the blood pressure of many a keen gardener, motorist and quite often a shepherd or two - it’s Sheep!🐑

As you meander through the winding roads on your way through the village, you might not be expecting to see a sheep standing in the road, staring at you as though you’re an alien from an unknown planet. But for the local residents of Goathland it has become a normal way of life.

Many of the farms and small holdings in and around Goathland have long-standing common rights to graze their flock on the surrounding moorland which is owned by the Duchy of Lancaster and this is why you will often see the sheep straying onto the village roads from the heather moorland and the stretches of green.

When we say that the presence of sheep in the village hasn’t changed for over a century, that isn’t strictly true. The breeds that you see around Goathland today will look slightly different from the days of our ancestors, but they still remain the cornerstone of the countryside. Quite often you’ll see Swaledales (with black faces and horns, left in the picture) as well as Cheviots (which are commonly crossed with a Texel or Beltex, seen on the right in the picture) and even Black-faced Scots.

Not everyone is a fan of the sheep, thanks to their natural ability to break into your garden, eat your favourite flowers and leave lots of p**p behind. But whether you’re a fan or not, you can’t argue with the fact that sheep have shaped the landscape where we live.

So if you’re visiting Goathland soon, be prepared to find yourself face to face with a different type of village resident. 🐑
