Our first walk of winter is very special indeed. Warfare and wildlife are not usually thought of together but the secrecy and forbidden access to military sites can be very good for wildlife indeed. Early winter is a wonderful time to see migrating birds and the shores of the Ore and surrounding fields are excellent feeding grounds. Naturalist Nigel Middleton will be on hand to point out the flora and fauna as we walk alongside the river Ore, across the water from Orford Ness and we are thrilled to be joined by Senior Retired Army Officer Ian Liles, OBE.

Orford Ness was used as a military test site since 1913 with top secret experiments conducted across both World Wars and into the nuclear age. It is acknowledged as the birthplace of RADAR and is still used now. Looking across the Ore to the iconic pagodas and laboratory buildings on the Ness, Ian will bring it to life from a military point of view and explain how it has shaped warfare across the world.

As always, we are extremely lucky to be able to provide our walkers with binoculars (courtesy of Viking Optical) for no extra charge.

Saturday 26th October, 11am. Please click the link for booking details.
