Robin and I went for a different walk today, our usual wild flower meadow has been mowed for hay. We had a wonderful time it was full of flowers and butterflies and we didn’t see a single person!
🐕
We also only saw two lonely orchids but masses of other flowers such as Bedstraw, Vetches and Milkworts. We also found some Squinancywort which is a type of Bedstraw, it was traditionally used to cure a sore throat (traditionally called squincy) and can be found across chalk grasslands.

One of my favourite places to visit in Cornwall is St Enodoc’s Church.
⛪️
This little church used to sit in the middle of sand dunes (at certain points covered over by them) but now sits nestled in the middle of a golf course!

The Norfolk Coast Path is a beautiful walk, I particularly like this lighthouse at Happisburgh which sits back from the coastline in the centre of a field!
🌱
The lighthouse was built in the 1790s and is now the only independently run lighthouse in Great Britain.

Had a great evening tour in Oxford yesterday and the light was just perfect!
☀️
This lamp post is reputed to be CS Lewis’ inspiration for the Iron Tree in his book The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Looking out from Old Portsmouth through the gates that naval officers would have walked through to return to their ships.
⛴️
The land on the other side is Gosport and Fort Blockhouse on the opposite side of the mouth of Portsmouth Harbour.
🌊
Fort Blockhouse started off as a blockhouse (a small fort of only one or two rooms) in the 1430s, it became a gun battery under Henry VIII, this battery fired upon Portsmouth during the English Civil War.
🏰
Fort Blockhouse was handed over to the Royal Navy in 1905 and it became HMS Dolphin and was the home of the Royal Navy Submarine Service until 1999. The cream tower in the picture is the Submarine Escape Training Tower which trained submariner recruits from July 1954 til it closed in 2020. Recruits who wanted to ‘earn their dolphins’ had to escape through a simulated airlock and swim unaided through 100ft of water towards the top of the tower. Something my Grandad succeeded in doing!
🐬
I am currently training for my second Blue Badge Tourist Guide qualification - the Central Southern area.

I do love snowdrop season and where I live I am very close to some wonderful Snowdrop gardens and Shaftesbury with its Snowdrop Festival!

Sadly my trusty camera has given up the ghost so I have a new (to me) camera! I went out for a play with it this morning and found some lovely snowdrops in the churchyard in Sutton Veny.

I was looking through some of my old pictures and found this one of a Solver Washed Fritillary that I took on Exmoor in 2013.
🦋
They are one of my favourite butterflies and are always moving about from food source to food source and so it was a real privilege to manage to catch one so still! It was feeding on Thistles one of their favourite food sources.

What a beautiful day today on the Isle of Wight and a lovely bracing walk up from Alum Bay onto Tennyson Down. I am here to look around as part of the Central Southern Blue Badge Guide Course I am on.
🥾
Alum Bay and The Needles sits on the very westerly point of the Isle of Wight. Alum Bay is famous for its beautiful multicoloured cliffs that come from layers of clay and sand being pushed up and condensed in almost verticale seams.

Me and my sister went up to Birmingham today to visit a relative and drove back down cross country. The sky was so beautiful that I couldn’t resist a detour to visit Arlington Row and Bibury. The mist was just beginning to settle on the River Coln when we arrived.

14/12/2022

I went to Salisbury Market yesterday for a little bit of Christmas shopping and it was the most glorious cold and clear day - perfect for a walk around the Cathedral Close.
👣
Salisburys Cathedral Close is over 80 acres making it the largest in the UK. The close was originally built for the canons of Salisbury Cathedral in the 1200s, to surround the new cathedral they were building. Today almost 600 people live within the confines of the close!
🏰
One of my favourite buildings in the close is No.68, Myles Place, which was built in 1718 on the site of one of the canonries. Myles Place was home at one point to the first two physicians at Salisbury Infirmary (founded in the 1760s).
👨‍⚕️
It has been used for filming and was recently used in the 2022 Great Expectations with Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham.

Putting Mum and Dads hens away tonight and their dog Flurry couldn’t stop growling and going mad in a corner of the veg patch.
🥦
Through further investigation found this very sweet young hedgehog and decided it was best to move it through the gate into another area of the garden… out of sight out of mind! Robin couldn’t understand what all the excitement was about, gave it one sniff, and went back to bed!
🦔
It’s so lovely to see them!
