Building cottages on top of cottages made it very difficult to stop smugglers moving contraband through floors, cupboards and trapdoors from boats up to the top of the village onto carts and transported far away. You definitely need to come and explore this quirky place because it’s like stepping back in time with most of it being untouched⚓️
Do you fancy some water sports activities whilst visiting the seaside?
Dexters Surf Shop at North Bay, Scarborough is the place to go - they have group and 1:1 sessions available for surfing, kayaking etc. They're friendly and welcoming and have an ace shop too.
Not surfing? Sit and enjoy a coffee taking it all in on the beach front.
😅 Where there's a will there's a way......
🏴☠️ The old haunts of a 17th century smuggler, the Kings Beck tunnel.
📖 Once upon a time the 18 th century, Robin Hood’s Bay was reportedly the busiest smuggling community on the Yorkshire coast. Its natural isolation, protected by marshy moorland on three sides, offered a natural aid to this well-organised business which, despite its dangers, must have paid better than fishing.
🌊 Smuggling at sea was backed up by many on land who were willing to finance and transport contraband. Fisherfolk, farmers clergy and gentry alike were all involved.
⚔️ Fierce battles ensued between smugglers and excise men, both at sea and on land, and Bay wives were known to pour boiling water over excise men from bedroom windows in the narrow alleyways. Hiding places, bolt holes and secret passages abounded. It is said that a bale of silk could pass from the bottom of the village to the top without leaving the houses. Never seeing daylight.
🏘️ So, next time you’re in Robin Hood’s Bay just remember you walk in the footsteps of Smugglers. And imagine that all around you was once a secret world of illegal activity.

Hello folks -
We've just had a cancellation for February half-term week (W/C 13th Feb 2023)..... just incase anyone is after a spot of some coastal North Yorkshire'ness in a lovely, characterful cottage.
For more info and to book;
Entire cottage in Robin Hood's Bay, United Kingdom. Hilda Cottage is a characterful 17th Century dwelling. The front door enters the living area, downstairs you will find the equipped kitchen with ...
Soooo, the coastal path walk from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby.... It's around 7 miles and has some undulating terrain! At this time of year it can get quite muddy in places so sturdy boots are a must, walking poles are useful if you need that extra bit of help.
There are places to sit and take some time out along the walk, and take in those incredible views. There is also a campsite along the way which serves refreshments etc (not always open).
You arrive into Whitby via the castle and you get to walk down the 100 steps, rather than up them! (Unless you also want to walk back to Robin Hoods Bay.....!).
Whitby is lovely and unique, full of shops, eateries, pubs, arcades, beach, and lots of ice-cream and Whitby jet. The Sanders Yard is a beautiful place for lunch and coffee in our opinion, and our first choice for lunch when visiting!
You can hop on a bus back from Whitby to RHB, the journey is around 20 minutes. Or you can book the Bay Private Hire taxi in advance to take you back to your cracking old girl of a host..... 13th Century Hilda Cottage 😄😄😄!
PS. Our top tip - if you enjoy having a walk pretty much to yourself/yourselves (and a few sheep you'll probably meet along the way) then set off at the crack of dawn. Perfect.
Happy walking!
