"Underground, overground, wombling free. The wombles of Wimbledon Common are we"

Wood-carved Womble sculptures have been unveiled on Alderney to celebrate the life of the creator of the Wombles, Elisabeth Beresford, who made the island her home for more than 30 years. You can now follow the Alderney Womble trail and learn about the very relevant Womble motto ‘Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish’.

The fictional pointy-nosed, furry creatures who live underground on Wimbledon Common burrowed their way into millions of hearts worldwide in the 1970s, and their dedication to recycling human rubbish was years ahead of its time.

🍁🍂 Book your late summer and autumn break to Alderney!

We know that summer has only just begun but those warmer days last longer on Alderney which makes September the perfect time to visit the island. As we move into October, temperatures cool and autumn colours start to appear, migrant birds heading south make a quick stop off and you can witness some of the best fiery sunsets imaginable.

We are looking forward to opening the WWII German Hospital as a Visitor experience on Saturday 6 July. 😍 The large bunker, hidden away off Longis Road, has been transformed over the last six months to create a premier visitor attraction. It was built by forced labourers under the German occupying power in 1943 and was used by the German army. There were bunk beds for up to thirty patients, separate rooms for the doctors and medical orderlies, an admissions room and a treatment room capable of dealing with major operations. It is the only bunker of its design in the Channel Islands, known as a ‘118b’ type bunker.

We would like to thank historian Colin Partridge and our dedicated volunteers Nigel Clarke, Andy Mileham, Neil Collings and John Walker, without whom this project would not have been completed. Also, thanks to various island contractors, States Works and George Capazario for his specialist WWII wiring, Building Supplies for sponsoring the paint supply, David at the Mignot Hospital for props and finally to Electricity Ltd for their generous sponsorship to cover ongoing electricity costs.

From Saturday 6 July the bunker will be open to the public 10am - 4pm every day. Admission is FREE.

⛱ Corblets is one of the more popular beaches on Alderney - a family favourite, the islands surfing beach (when the wind is right) and a wide sandy sweep that, at low tide, connects with nearby Arch Bay with a rocky outcrop, perfect for exploring rockpools. But, keep an eye on the tide!

Normandy, June 6, 1944. Allied forces fought to end World War II in Europe. About 160,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and France to fight N**i soldiers. More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the invasion.

To these men and women, we owe the freedom that we take for granted today. We should - and will not - ever forget their sacrifice.
