I wanted to tell you about the change that has happened in my world today. It’s a positive change (I hope) but if I’m honest I’m a little nervous.

My recent 1 to 1’s sessions with the lovely Milla and Sally over the last week has taught me so much on how to improve my account. And my golly I was starting at a low base.

Over the next few weeks I’ll share some of the tips I’ve learnt on how to try to be more engaging but tonight I’ll kick off with the first change i’ve just made to my grid. And that is a name change.

pretty much sums up what we do in a nutshell. No more second guessing whether I’m a builder, architect or potter and with the help of the revised bio and new swanky link, I’m hoping it will clarify things further. But I’m a little nervous I’m going to lose a lot of followers with this change and so I wonder if any of you would be kind enough to share my new name?

The trickiest thing about shooting in a wildflower meadow is ensuring the tall grasses and oxide daisy’s don’t get trampled and spoil the image.

Here jo makes it look effortless during this weeks tablescape photoshoot but I can assure you we were reaching for the hair straighteners by the end of it.

I’m definitely stepping out of my comfort zone but I totally trust choice and judgement. Can’t wait to do the big reveal soon. ⁣

I’ve got a new favourite insta-crush, the house and garden of the utterly glamorous Alice Naylor-Leyland ( ). ⁣

She has a fairytale vision of English country living and her table settings are sublime, (as you’d imagine with her mother being , the fabulous table laying aficionado). ⁣

Do go and have a look at them both to see their glamorous table settings to suit every occasion. I have ALOT to learn. ⁣

I couldn’t be more excited to show you a little something I have just won. The last time I actually won something was the scales competition at cello school when I was thirteen, but I’m not really counting that right now. ⁣

No this win is exciting because it’s a painting by the fabulously talented that I bid on at the virtual Food4Heroes epic charity auction on Saturday night. And by sheer luck I won! Yay 😀 ⁣

The money couldn’t go to a better charity right now and I’m thrilled to have contributed and even more so with our new painting. ⁣

So I thought I’d give you a little glimpse of my prize, hanging centre stage in our kitchen. A beautiful snowy, tobogganing scene in all of my favourite colours. ⁣thank you for all your hard work at providing free and nutritious meals to frontline NHS staff until the end of the Covid-19 pandemic

So I’ve got a conundrum and I’d love some help please. ⁣

After just 5 years the paint seems to be peeling off many of our windows outside, mainly on the north facing walls. Do I do a touch up job using the same paint, Clay Mid in oil eggshell from (making sure the surface is properly prepared this time) or do I take the opportunity to change the colour altogether as I’ve always thought them too yellow anyway?!? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If I do go for a complete change, can anyone suggest a long lasting exterior paint and even better, can you please tell me what colour to paint them. I’m hopeless at choosing colours and it’s particularly tricky for these windows as the colour needs to match in with all the elevations, the cream render, the red bricks and the Horton stone.⁣ and does it matter if they don’t then match the drainpipes? 😩⁣
⁣⁣
All suggestions hugely helpful! 😀⁣⁣

We’ve had a lovely family shielding in the cottage during lockdown who will shortly be heading back to the city once restrictions are lifted. ⁣

I’ve got so used to having long term tenants I’m now slightly dreading reverting back to the normality of short stay holiday lets. It’s been a lovely break from endless changeovers and ironing piles sky high. ⁣

Are you feeling the change in the air and is there something just round the corner that you’re dreading the return of? ⁣

I’m flattered to have so many new followers recently so I thought I’d say hello you all and share a little about who I am and what Gone to Ashbrook is about. I’m Josephine and I live here at Asbhrook with my husband, our 3 teenage daughters, our new puppy, Lettie Lockdown, Rosie our moggie, cracker the hamster and the chickens, Mabel and Iris. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We bought Ashbrook, a derelict farmstead back in 2011 with the idea of building our family home with a rentable guest cottage and all purposely designed as a shoot location with film and photography in mind.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Nine years on we have had so much fun hosting a number of crew and guests from all over the world. And in turn, this has enabled us to continue to develop the grounds to make Ashbrook a joyful location for all.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So this account is a mix of everything I love about life here at Ashbrook - gardening, interiors, design and upcoming projects. And I share a few tips I’ve picked up along the way about building from scratch as well as examples of work from my sketch design business (see my SKETCH DESIGN stories)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A special thanks goes to who have helped me so much in turning what was once a field of grazing cattle into now a lovely garden and to from who without him this house would not be. ⁣

Have you ever wished for window seats but your walls just aren’t thick enough? ⁣

It’s a common circumstance with so many houses, particularly 𝐧𝐞𝐰-𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐬, so this morning I thought I’d show you how we overcame it at Ashbrook in 5 simple steps: ⁣

1. Build out around the windows with a deep timber frame ⁣

2. Face the frame with a chunky cornice. We sourced ours from

3. For an authentic look try finding old floorboards to make the window seats, mdf just doesn’t have the character. We found ours ⁣

4. Give your old floorboards a gentle clean up and wax With . Doesn’t matter that the boards have d***s and scuffs and might be a bit wonky, it all adds to the charm.,⁣

5. And finally... create a timber panel to hide the wall behind it. Here we went for a New-England style vibe and painted the wall behind with jet black paint, giving the impression that there’s a lovely deep reveal behind. ⁣

There’s a secret behind this old stone cooker hood... and that is that it’s made almost entirely from 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 (see method below), copied from a picture I’d seen on Pinterest and re-created on a shoestring budget. ⁣

And 5 years ago today the hood was created. ⁣

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭:⁣

1. Built wooden frame to take the weight of the cooker hood. ⁣

2. screwed plasterboard to the face of the frame. ⁣

3. Attached cornice moulding to create the look of ‘corbels’ . ⁣

4. gave it a good plaster skim⁣

5. added score marks and lines with a pencil to give the look of stone corbels stacked on top of each other ⁣

6. Once it was dry, distressed with watered down paint from . ⁣

How did we do?? A good replica?⁣

Being married to a man who’s 6ft 8” often has its challenges. 😬 And finding a bath large enough to fit him was one of them. ⁣

Luckily for us, during the build of Ashbrook we found this gorgeous antique cast iron one from salvage company. All we then had to do was build the bedroom big enough to house it!⁣

A new-build beauty is open for business

Completed in 2014, The House, Cottage, Pavilion and Grounds at Ashbrook were created by acclaimed UK interior designer, Josephine Maydon with film, photography and house rental in mind. Ashbrook is a natural paradise with 16-acres of gorgeous grounds located at the intersection of three beautiful British counties: Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
