Did a recce to Knightshayes (NT) near Tiverton (about 30 mins from AB) to check accessibility and was delighted to find the gardens have very good access. One slightly challenging hill path (pictured) but otherwise very wheelchair friendly. Glorious gardens, and The Lost Kitchen restaurant nearby (also wheelchair friendly) for sunny lunch on the terrace. Both venues going on the website guide to the area.

For all the lovely folk heading to the south west for hols this year, this is a wonderful guide to off-the-beaten-track spots. It doesn’t, however, have accessible info (!) but if you cross reference with my guide to the area for guests of AB (on the aisle barn.co.uk) website, you can identify stuff that caters for EVERYONE!

Brand new (warmer, quieter, better) gas and electric fire and stove at Aisle Barn - the old ones were not happy, so I retired them! Now I just need to compose intelligible instructions for use... (which means I have to sit in front of them with a cup of coffee on a blowy day - hellish)

One of the best things about running AB as a holiday rental (I’m a journalist by trade!) is being a part of families planning their hols. I did not anticipate how uplifting it is to get excited about someone else’s holiday plans! Gratuitous pic of the walled garden’s fritillaria in gentle, head-bobbing form this morning.

The master bathroom at Aisle Barn worked very well for Charlie (and lots of guests) but we are planning some improvements to make it more user friendly for a bigger group of people. Realistically we may not be able to do this before the end of 2021, but I’m interested in hearing what kit and infrastructure we could incorporate that would be useful. As it is, the bathroom doesn’t have a hoist. I’m considering a ceiling hoist running from the loo to a fold down shower bench over the bath. But I’d really like to hear from the experts (ie the people who use this kit). Any recommendations? The bathroom is big so we have space to play with. Thanks!

It is difficult to describe Aisle Barn to people who haven’t been. It is essentially the work of Charlie, who lived there. His taste and desire to live independently in a ‘proper’ house created the space. It is built within a grade II listed 5-aisle beamed barn yet has the warmth and comfort of a modern house. (Something I often envy!) He loved gardening too, thus the formal walled garden, the orchard, the terrace and raised herb beds and the fruitful fan-trained figs, apricots and more. I have discovered quince in the orchard and rare wildflowers in the meadow beneath the orchard. All meticulously planned by Charlie. He also adored sculpture, which grace the house and gardens. Cooking was another passion and the kitchen is a cook’s dream. If you value rural tranquility and views over parkland from bed, Aisle Barn may be a top spot for your holiday. Tiptoeing around the cyclamen and crocuses in Aisle Barn’s walled garden orchard to prune the fruit trees (and pat the ‘grazing sheep’, of course). Spring has sprung ❤️

Sadly we are now in Tier 4 in Somerset, so we can’t have any guests until that lifts. What a year it has been eh. We will be raising a glass (or three!) tonight and hope that the new year brings back some semblance of normality, and that people can travel, explore and adventure again. In the meantime my kids are damming the stream in Rook Wood to create a new habitat. We are lucky to have the space for them to play outside - next year hopefully we can share that space a lot more! We saw the first snowdrops yesterday - bring on the daffodils (seen here March 2020) ❤️ Max

I have started compiling a list of wheelchair accessible places, events, days out, restaurants, pubs etc for Aisle Barn guests (and anyone else who cares to use it) If you have any suggestions, send them over! Euan's Guide is, as always, a great resource too but not a lot of information on our area so far. I encourage everyone to review on Euans too to build up the information for wheelchair users visiting Somerset, Devon and Dorset.

Aisle Barn’s resting Buddha. Suits the mood during lockdown but we are looking forward to the sounds of happy guests again. As the weather turns colder I’m increasingly finding reasons to hang out there (because it is much warmer than home!) 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Aisle Barn is available to rent over Christmas and New Year. Warm, rural and set within 60 acres of private estate - even if it snows (it does some years) undercover parking in the barn part of Aisle Barn makes getting out and about easy. Happy to pick up and extra Xmas tree to decorate (just ask Max). Oh, I hope it 🌨🌨🌨🌨🌨🌨🌨🌨

🔥 make a home - even with the sad, book-free shelves (Covid regs)

Ah, the bookshelves at Charlie’s house (Aisle Barn) look so empty. We had to remove and store all the amazing books because of blasted COVID. and it makes all the rooms look a bit blank. Luckily there is a cosy gas-effect fire in the sitting room to compensate. Various people have advised me to re...

Urgh, the possibility looms of another lockdown, looking at Paris I suspect a fair few will want to move somewhere outside the city. If you know anyone who wants to rent Aisle Barn for the whole duration of lockdown, please pass the website details on? There is bags of space up there, it has working (albeit rural) wi Fi , better than ours actually (why?!) and as long as it is all done correctly (ie if moving from a higher tier area taking the necessary measures) it would be nice to have some new lockdown neighbours for a bit! The barn is a very comfortable house in winter too. Bags of parking, lovely private walled garden and rural walks literally on your doorstep. The only hitch is you may have to talk to me one in a while! Thx, max

Our latest guests have left (avid fisherman who caught a fair few of our carp) and I nipped over to reset the heating today (it is now nippy at night in Somerset) only to find a scorcher of a day. Indian Summer heaven
