It may look simple enough but the first of six braced round wood arches took a fair amount of head scratching to make. It will now be dismantled and stored while we get on with the next one which I hope will be way easier second time round. Thanks to Dom for his expertise and sticking with it.

Great to be working with Dom this week as we get started on the new roundhouse for Cornish Yurt Holidays. There’s been a fair bit of preparation to get this far so good to get properly underway.
The sweet chestnut trees were planted in 2000 to be coppiced for yurt poles but I never got round to coppicing them - until now when they have grown to be quite hefty- so although the roundhouse will be very different I hope it will retain some circular yurty qualities.

We are still open until the end of the month but it’s that time of year when many yurts start coming down before the harsher weather comes in. We had a beautiful day to take these three down for a customer on the coast.
It’s a special time of year to be in Cornwall, so if you feel like some quiet time with sauna and wood burners blazing DM for details, before the season closes.

Pinhole photographs from the series ‘In the Shadow of the Tree of Life,’ images of Ash trees, with exposures lasting several months and the emulsion partly washed away by the windblown rain.

Lovely Open Day yesterday for the Ash Tree Project with our local Wildlife and Conservation Group and Cornwall Butterfly Conservation and Storytelling with Susan Samm. Big Thankyou to all who came and to Jo Best for the refreshments.
It was the first time the red ash circle was put together and the first time I’ve exhibited any photos in many years. It was good to bring art and nature and storytelling together in a Cornish field.

Ready for the Open Day here tomorrow, a small celebration of Ash trees. The Red Ash circle is up, for the first time, the pinhole photos are hanging in the yurt. There will be some assorted spoonware too, storytelling, making story sticks and Nature walks and cake and coffee to raise some money for the local wildlife and Conservation Group.
Hope to see some of you there. From 11- 4 at Sunnybank, St Breward, PL304LP .Very limited parking please park in the village and walk .

Totally forgot it was Father’s Day today - Thankyou you to both my daughters for reminding me - spent the morning putting up the yurt for the retreat next weekend. It has lived through different incarnations but when it was first made thirteen years ago the four of us lived in it through a cold wet winter, so it always carries with it memories of a different time.

Looking forward to our Open Day on the 29th June for an Ash Tree themed day with an exhibition of pinhole photographs, and the ongoing Red Ash Project - which involves painting 100 ash trees and stems felled as a consequence of ash die back.
The open day is An opportunity to get involved or come along for some tree talk with story telling, a steam bending demo and cake and coffees. It is free and all ages are welcome.
29th June from 11-4pm
The trees were planted in the year 2000 as a coppice to generate poles for the yurt making business and other greenwood crafts. In 2021 they were hit by ash dieback and we started to look for other ways of using the wood apart from firewood. This project is a celebration of Ash Trees as they slowly disappear from our woods and hedgerows.

Building a scale model of the yurt inspired roundhouse to get a sense of the proportions and various stages involved. Unlike reciprocal frames this will have an overhead wheel like traditional yurt and ger designs. It’s hard to believe that Cornish Yurt Holidays has been going for almost 25 years - apart from a couple of Tipi sites - we were maybe the first yurt holiday site to offer low impact, close to nature holidays. We’ve tried to avoid the glamping label as much as possible to offer an authentic handmade stay on the edge of the wilder lands of Bodmin moor, without sacrificing too much by way of comfort. Although there will be one or two exciting changes for next year we will be staying close to our roots.
