Lovely Open Day yesterday for the Ash Tree Project with our local Wildlife and Conservation Group and Cornwall Butterfly Conservation and Storytelling with Susan Samm. Big Thankyou to all who came and to Jo Best for the refreshments.
It was the first time the red ash circle was put together and the first time I’ve exhibited any photos in many years. It was good to bring art and nature and storytelling together in a Cornish field.
Thanks to for the lovely pics.

Totally forgot it was Father’s Day today - Thankyou you to both my daughters for reminding me - spent the morning putting up the yurt for the retreat next weekend. It has lived through different incarnations but when it was first made thirteen years ago the four of us lived in it through a cold wet winter, so it always carries with it memories of a different time.

Looking forward to our Open Day on the 29th June for an Ash Tree themed day with an exhibition of pinhole photographs, and the ongoing Red Ash Project - which involves painting 100 ash trees and stems felled as a consequence of ash die back.
The open day is An opportunity to get involved or come along for some tree talk with story telling, a steam bending demo and cake and coffees. It is free and all ages are welcome.
29th June from 11-4pm
The trees were planted in the year 2000 as a coppice to generate poles for the yurt making business and other greenwood crafts. In 2021 they were hit by ash dieback and we started to look for other ways of using the wood apart from firewood. This project is a celebration of Ash Trees as they slowly disappear from our woods and hedgerows.

Once they would have been at the forefront of agricultural engineering , now almost 70 years on these tractors and trailers have mostly gone the way of the heavy horses before them. I am not a Luddite and welcome life generating change but many aspects of modern farming and the technology that dominates it, separates us step by step from the soil beneath our feet and Something so vital is lost in this process.
At the same time I’m dependent on a neighbouring farmer to drop feed bales off because this little tractor can’t lift them. No easy answers to this.

In the Shadow of the Tree of Life- a pinhole view of an Ash Tree with the iPhone equivalent of the same tree. This series of pinhole pictures is ongoing and celebrates and mourns the fast decline of ash trees along the Camel Valley and beyond.
Pinhole cameras have been around along time and I used them many years ago but my renewed interest is partly inspired by pinhole works of trees and his sunflowers circle planted at Kestle Barton.
I’m going to be posting more art based work on the Wild Circle account to keep it separate from the yurt and yurt holidays side of things. For me it’s all connected but IG algorhythms don’t work like that. Maintaining two accounts is a challenge but I’ll see how it goes.
More pinhole images can be seen on the Wild Circle website and are available to buy via the shop.

Setting up the holiday yurts at this time of year can sometimes feel like a steep hill to climb especially with all the weather we ve been having, but there are always new additions and changes to keep it all lively. It feels like I’m always saying that this and that was made here in the Yurtworks workshop or by a friend or neighbour, but maybe it needs to be said more - stuff made by hand by people you know from materials on your doorstep brings something special to any experience- a little bit of soul maybe. It’s at the heart of what we do here. This set of drawers from the Ashfield Yurt was made by neighbour Steve and painted here in the workshop with the additional fishing float handles. ThTs not to say that there aren’t a few IKEA accessories in there too …….

Apart from roundabouts, circular shapes/spaces in urban parks, buildings, town and city planning in general are uncommon, and in Bath so much more is made of the Royal Crescent and the baths, and the shops than the 18th century Circus nearby. The huge plane trees were not in Woods original design but planted 50 yrs later making them over 200 years old. There are those that may say that they get in the way of the architecture but standing as they do as tall as the surrounding buildings they bring a rare presence - maybe something of the Sacred Grove about them that I think would feel different in a city Square or park.

Making a lot of stuff at the moment, not sure where it’s leading to. This little spoon is from a piece of blackthorn nearby with a rabbit leg bone stem. I’m always hesitant about using animal parts in what I make, but for a number of reasons I’m ok with this.

I usually like to know what tree the wood came from and where it had grown, before I make anything from it, but that’s not always possible. Clearing out the workshop I came across these feet off an Afghan or Pakistan charpoi or bedstead. I adapted the bed which is still in use in the Green Man yurt but I took a few inches off them years ago and held onto the offcuts. I’ve no idea what the wood is but maybe teak. It’s hard and a little oily but still carves well, glad they didn’t end up in the wood burner.
