Situated on the northern tip of the Isle of Mull just a short drive out from Tobermory, Glengorm Castle overlooks the Atlantic and has spectacular views towards the Outer Hebrides and back across the Sound of Mull to the Scottish mainland. The Castle is a classic Scottish Victorian pile built in 1860.

Operating as a bed and breakfast, Glengorm Castle is perfect for those seeking peace and a rural retreat. At the same time it is a family home, occupied year-round by the owners and their children. (What lucky children, to live in such a beautiful house in such an amazing location!) Guests have full use of the main hall, sitting room, library and breakfast room, all beautifully decorated in period style. There are open fires in all the public rooms and complimentary whisky in the library. Free wi-fi is available in the hall but doesn’t pe*****te through the thick stone walls to other rooms.

There are four en-suite rooms and a fifth with a private bathroom adjacent to the bedroom. All of the rooms are large, with notably comfy beds and impressive views. There are sea views from the west and north-facing rooms while the south-facing one faces the front lawn and the surrounding forests of the island. Naturally the rooms feature modern conveniences such as a television, coffee-maker, hair dryer and iPod dock. There is also an apartment suite with two bedrooms, a sitting room, a kitchen and even a utility room. The suite has access to the original tower built in 1860 and roof access looking over the turrets.

The wild landscape of Mull has a magnetic attraction for anyone with a taste for nature. To make the most of walking in the area we recommend one of the guided walks accompanied by expert wildlife rangers who will help you get the most from your visit. As well as the wildlife and farm animals you can see Dun Ara medieval fort, the 4000 year-old standing stones and the lost village of Balliacrach. For visitors less enthused by walking, the Land Rover Safaris will take you past highland cattle and black-face sheep, passing the historic landmarks and opening up the possibility of spotting a white-tailed sea eagle, a golden eagle, one of the elusive sea otters or maybe a majestic red deer stag.

Nestled on the eastern slope of the Sienese Montagnola, surrounded by woods and fields, Relais Le Macine di Stigliano (https://www.littlehotels.co.uk/it/macine-di-stigliano.php) is an ancient building, part of one of the medieval castles that punctuate the area. The hotel enjoys a privileged position, deep in the country yet with easy access to Siena. The whole Siena province is within reach: from San Galgano Abbey to vineyards and cellars of the Chianti area, from thermal springs to medieval citadels such as Montalcino, Pienza and Monteriggioni.

The flower-filled garden and terraces are lovely places to settle for a little relaxation, and also a great place for breakfast on a sunny morning. The swimming pool has sunbeds and parasols all around. Indoors, there’s a generous lounge, beautifully decorated, and a small bar.

The guest accommodation consists in four Superior Rooms and six Standard Rooms: each room furnished and decorated with taste, so as to respect the beauty of the ancient building. All the rooms have a choice of double or twin beds, along with a choice of pillows. There’s a television, telephone, safe, minibar and a kettle for making your tea or coffee. The bathrooms have a shower or bathtub and include bathrobes, slippers, a hairdryer and pool towels.

Within few minutes drive of El Macine di Staglioni you can find all the most beautiful valleys of Tuscany. You might choose to visit Val d'Elsa and travel the Francigena, the ancient pilgrim road to Rome. Along the way you’ll discover all the medieval villages of the area, such as Colle Val d'Elsa, Monteriggioni, Volterra and San Gimignano, famous for its towers. Or you can visit the Val D'Orcia, with its beautiful views of rolling hills decorated by iconic cypress trees, the "ideal city" of Pienza, unique for the splendour of its Renaissance architecture, and the thermal baths of Bagno Vignoni. And don’t forget Siena itself, home every year to the palio horse-race.

The Hotel La Moraleja seems like a well-kept secret, tucked away in beautiful Cala San Vicente on the rugged northern tip of Mallorca. The hotel has 22 rooms in total, most of them Junior Suites which have generous sitting areas and large terraces overlooking the impressive views. There is also an even more impressive Penthouse Suite and the Grand Suite which includes two bedrooms.

Relaxation and serenity come as standard in a garden and terrace with two swimming pools, one with heating which extends the swimming season into May and October. Parts of the ample terraces can be not just your sun-bathing area but your breakfast room or your dining room too, as the restaurant continues outside. For a light snack or refreshment in between meals there is the bar-café which also specialises in cocktails and their own brand of G&T. Finally there is the spa centre with whirlpool bath, massage room and sauna, offering various therapy treatments.

When you go indoors, the luxury continues unabated with broad hallways and an elegant lounge. Throughout the hotel there is a large collection of artworks on display, all originals by celebrated French and Spanish artists. If that’s not enough, there is also a separate display of classic sportcars from the 50s to the 70s, picked from the owner’s private collection.

Although it’s hard to tire of the beauties of the hotel and Cala San Vicente, there is plenty more to visit and explore close by. The northern extremity of the island is amazing, with the massive rocky promontory of Formentor falling sheer into the blue Mediterranean. Meanwhile a short drive down the north-west coast offers mountains, coastline and seascapes in abundance. For a pleasingly quiet way to while away an evening in town, Pollensa is right nearby and finally the long sandy beaches of Pollensa and Alcudia are another short hop further on.

Boutique Hotel La Moraleja is a luxurious small hotel tucked away in the beautiful Cala San Vicente on the rugged northern tip of Mallorca.

Escape Boutique B&B in Llandudno offers exclusive, stylish and luxurious accommodation. Starting out as a 19th century summer retreat for a wealthy industrialist, it then had to be saved from a fate as flats before being reborn as “one of the UK’s coolest B&Bs” according to The Times.

Each of the rooms is full of fun, character & personality with many bespoke, personally-designed items of furniture. They have been given cheeky nicknames such as Retro Red, Urban Cool & The Bo***ir to reflect their cheeky style. Each one comes with luxurious features such as flat-screen TVs, Bose iPod docks, Blu Ray Disc Players and free wi-fi access. Some rooms have other novel features like LED wallpaper (!) or "floating" beds.

The public rooms at Escape have Victorian hardwood floors, oak-panelling, stained glass and handcrafted fireplaces, all with a contemporary twist that takes nothing away from the original. There's an honesty bar in the sitting room, while delicious breakfasts are served in an attractive dining room using ingredients from award-winning local butchers.

Escape is located in an enviable position just half-a-mile from the Llandudno seafront and the Great Orme.

An exclusive, stylish and luxurious boutique B&B near the Great Orme in Llandudno.

Hotel Castelbrac is a 5 star hotel perched on the rocky shore at Dinard, facing across towards St Malo. Unquestionably, this is the best position in Dinard. There are terraces and a garden where the hotel cascades down towards the sea, and a unique swimming pool that takes full advantage of the shoreside location. Nestled just above the pool is a small gym with cycling and cardio machines.

The Salon Charcot is a large lounge overlooking the sea (as does just about everything at Castelbrac) that celebrates the antarctic expedition of Jean-Baptiste Charcot in 1904. This was the very location from which the expedition was planned, but now it is a place to relax, take in the view and enjoy afternoon tea. That's right despite the usual French preference for coffee, the Charcot room offers a large variety of teas from all the great tea-growing regions.

The restaurant at this Castelbrac is called "Pourquoi Pas" (Why not!). Why not indeed, because this is a restaurant with both a fabulous view and a dedicated chef who has created a local and simple cuisine with a marine spirit. "Simplicity", but with excellence in the quality of the ingredients, local sourcing and most importantly, taste. Alongside the restaurant is the Aquarium Bar, created from the national aquarium that was on this site for over 60 years. Fabulously decorated, it offers an extensive cocktail and wine menu, along with delicious appetisers.

The 25 rooms and suites are all oriented toward the sea. Although they are each individual, there is a pleasing theme throughout, with gothic arch shapes and touches of art deco all brought together into something that is thoroughly 21st century.

A 5 star luxury hotel right on the edge of the sea at Dinard, looking across the water to St Malo.

Hotel Emblemático San Marcos really does display a style that is emblematic of a Canarian gentleman’s house. The interior is richly decorated with fine furniture, carpets, paintings and lots and lots of deeply lustred wood.

https://www.littlehotels.co.uk/canaries/san-marcos.php

Set in the centre of Icod de Los Vinos the hotel is close to the San Marcos church and the famous Drago Milenario, an historic dragon tree that is the emblem of Icod. The patio terrace is filled with trees and shrubs and provides a view directly up on to the adjoining hills.

The hotel offers 6 guestrooms equipped with air-conditioning, a safe, a minibar, flat-screen television and a coffee-maker. The en-suite bathrooms have a shower, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries. Some rooms also have a balcony looking out over the patio and the nearby hills and mountains.

The Dragon Park is just a short walk away and the San Marcos beach is only a little further. For guests with a hire car, the whole north coast of Tenerife offers beaches, cliffs, mountains and wall-to-wall spectacular views.

St Valery Boutique B&B is a relaxing seaside hideaway for grown-ups in the pretty village of Alnmouth on the Northumberland coast. What could be better than an early morning stroll on the deserted beach, watch the sun come up over the sea and then return for breakfast just as the village is waking up? (Or just have a lie-in, if you prefer.) With just 4 rooms, there’s only ever space for up to 8 guests at any one time, so you’ll always feel looked after.

Breakfast is a hearty affair. Take your pick from breakfast quesadilla or smashed avocado on toast. Indulge in a Full English or sample the signature St Valery Marmite Mushrooms on toasted sourdough. Stay at the weekend and you may discover some weekend specials too. If you’re planning on going out for the day you can order a lunchtime picnic hamper, and when you get back there’s the honesty bar. Perfect for a glass of wine before dinner, a cold lager on a hot day, a large G&T just because, right the way through to the post walk brandy to warm the cockles on the coldest of days. There are even perfectly sized bottles of champagne for two. Or one, if you’re thirsty!

As an area of outstanding natural beauty, Alnmouth attracts a lot of walkers, cyclists and surfers. Get tips on the best walks, arrange to hire a bike or sample some more exuberant activities like coasteering or kayaking. Then kick back with some spa time or a beauty treatment. Just ask, and it can be arranged.

Four large, elegant comfortable rooms in a townhouse in the seaside town of Alnmouth.

Penally Abbey is a hotel that offers a blend of modern elegance and rich history. Built from Pembrokeshire limestone just outside to lovely town of Tenby, it is resplendent with period features, hand-carved furniture and a wealth of quirky Welsh heritage. The grounds include an ancient well and even a ruined Norman abbey, as well as a sunny terrace for sitting out and a splendiferous array of flowers and shrubs.

https://www.littlehotels.co.uk/gb/penally-abbey.php

The sitting room is a great place to settle in quietly or chat with other guests. It has a view of the gardens, and a blazing fire when the weather turns cooler. Meanwhile the snug bar has an overlay of modernity on its traditional style; a cosy place to take a tipple of local craft beers or a Welsh whiskey (yes, that surprised me too!).

Penally Abbey is a wonderful place to enjoy dinner in the candlelit restaurant. The service is attentive without being stuffy or intrusive. From exceptionally fresh seafood to prime Welsh lamb, every dish is beautifully cooked and served in style. If you can't wait for dinner, Penally serves afternoon tea too.

The rooms at Penally Abbey have hand-picked furnishings and character features abound. Snugly quilted beds and pale, restful colours create a calming coastal chic. Large windows fill each room with blissful light and guests can enjoy views of Tenby and Caldey Island or admire the gardens and grounds of the hotel. Each room is uniquely designed and seductively different.

Glencoe House is more than a hotel, it is an experience. It's not cheap of course, but it will leave fantastic memories long after the bill has been forgotten. This magical Victorian country house stands in acres of grounds high above Loch Leven.

The seven suites in the main house are quite simply, huge. Each one is the size of a moderate house with a bedroom (or two), an immense sitting room with sofas, a dining corner and a desk, and a bathroom that will pander to your every whim. The views from the massive windows are just out-of-this-world.

Only slightly less extravagant than the Glencoe Suites are the Belltower Suites which are "only" the size of a small house. These cottage-style suites are housed in an adjoining building with private walled terraces and whirlpool baths, mezzanine bedrooms and a kitchen that takes self-catering to a whole new level.

Guests are encouraged to stroll through the 10 acres of gardens laid out by Lord Strathcona, or wander further afield. The Scottish highlands offer the most magnificent scenery you will see anywhere.

A stunningly extravagant experience in a magnificent Victorian mansion overlooking Loch Leven.

My first thought was that the only drawing instrument this architect possessed was a ruler. But I was being unfair, because Le Cube clearly shows that straight lines can be interesting and elegant. Le Cube is further enhanced by the massive mural on the front wall and the position, on the Giens peninsula just 50m from the Mediterranean Sea.

https://www.littlehotels.co.uk/fr/le-cube.php

There are four double rooms at Le Cube, each one about 20m2 in size with a private terrace leading into the garden. They all have a large double bed (or twins if you prefer), reversible air-conditioning, a safe, a desk and an en-suite bathroom. One room even includes a large, luxurious bath-to-share in the bedroom.

Guests have access to a common area that comprises a fully-equipped kitchen and a living room with a sofa and an Apple TV. They are free to prepare meals in the kitchen at any time, and the cupboards include independent storage for each room. There is also a barbecue in the garden for al fresco cooking.

The simple shapes and straight lines of Le Cube are carried through into the garden, with it's confidently rectangular pool and smooth flat lawn. Just a few shrubs and the tall hedges and trees soften the effect.

Being on the peninsula near Hyeres, Le Cube is virtually surrounded by the sea, so there are beaches, small harbours and watersports opportunities everywhere.

18/07/2024

Can Talaias was originally discovered by comic-actor Terry Thomas and his wife while horse-riding on Ibiza. At that point it was just another run-down farmhouse surrounded by dry fields and carob trees, but the views were irresistible. Having failed to resist, the house was bought, extended and improved to create the wonderful place we see today. Working from the original features of the finca, the improvements retained the classic Ibicencan style of thick walls with soft rounded edges, dark wood floors and large arched windows.

It's hard to find enough superlatives to describe Can Talaias, a little finca hotel surrounded by hills and pine trees and overlooking the blue waters of the Mediterranean. There is something for everyone when staying at Can Talaias. It's a family haven, with safe exciting grounds all around, a trampoline, a kids garden house, and friendly animals. It's also a unique romantic escape, with a festival of colours from sunrise to sunset, spectacular starry nights with moonlit sea as a bonus when the time is right!

The terrace in front of the hotel is simply huge and the views from there are stunning. It really is an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely breakfast facing the rising sun. Further down the hill is the wonderful swimming pool, secluded, and offering a choice of sun or shade. The gardens extend even further and are stocked with all manner of native species. They are a magical place to walk, sit or stroll, regardless of whether you're a garden lover or not. The original concept of the Mediterranean garden has been taken further to include a large plant nursery and greenhouses specialising in drought-resistant plants suitable for Ibiza.

Few guests will spend much time indoors but there is a lovely sitting room with a library for those times when a little indoor relaxation is in order. The guest rooms are comfortable and beautifully decorated. The two suites have their own terraces with extensive sea views. Most other rooms also have a terrace and/or a sea view.

A lovely rural boutique hotel that was once the home of actor Terry Thomas. Equally suitable as a romantic escape or for a family holiday.

Marigot Palms is a fantastic getaway destination on St Lucia, surrounded by palm trees and tropical garden, perfectly positioned on the hillside above Marigot Bay. This is the place where you can wake up to the most glorious view of the sparkling Caribbean, yachts at anchor and waves gently rippling onto the beach and rocks.

The bar, terrace and swimming pool all enjoy the spectacular view over the bay, but if you can tear yourself away there is a gym for the more energetic visitors and massage treatments, manicures and pedicures for those who want to take a more relaxed approach to their holiday. The bar also claims the distinction of being one of the only spots in the Caribbean where you can enjoy a large selection of Belgian abbey and speciality beers.

It’s only a five minute stroll down to Marigot beach where you find water sports, a bank, ATM, shops and many water-front restaurants and bars. Specially recommended are the snorkelling trips on Marigot Palms’ own boat. It will be an unforgettable experience as you visit several carefully chosen locations and swim over the colourful Caribbean coral and fish. There are many other trips and activities in the area: guided hikes on the Tet Paul Trail, a visit to the iconic St Lucia Pitons, mineral baths, sulphur springs, the botanical gardens, ziplining in the rainforest, visiting a working 18th century sugar mill, Pigeon Island National Park and so much more besides.

Spectacularly-positioned apartments in a tropical garden overlooking Marigot Bay.

Amanhavis is a small, unusual yet elegant hotel located in the little town of Benahavís just 5 km from the water's edge on the Costa Del Sol. Built in a typically Moorish style, the hotel appears like a delightful jumble of boxes piled together around the garden, terrace and swimming pool. It combines the charm of a building that has evolved rather than been designed, with all the luxuries the modern traveller has come to expect.

The nine rooms represent a potted history of southern Spain, delighting in such names as The Sultan Boabdil's Chamber and The Horse Thief's Hideout. Amanhavis takes the theme of its rooms a step further than most, so that the Astronomer's Observatory, for instance, comes complete with telescope and an observation window in the ceiling. The Philosopher's Study has its own secret escape tunnel. However they never forget that the room is first and foremost a guest's little home while on holiday.

A small, unusual yet elegant hotel with some quirky themes, located in the little town of Benahavis just 5 km from the water's edge on the Costa Del Sol.

The Zetter Townhouse (https://www.littlehotels.co.uk/gb/zetter-townhouse.php) is a quirky Georgian townhouse hotel located on a picturesque cobbled square in Clerkenwell, London. The remarkable interior gives the look and feel of a private residence belonging to some imagined eccentric Great Aunt. The staff have even given her a name: Wilhelmina!

The award-winning cocktail lounge pays homage to the distilling heritage of the area. Old recipes for tinctures, bitters and herbal remedies have inspired some of the cocktails, and the bar has an apothecary-style counter. The lounge provides a selection of nibbles, sharing platters and supper bowls to go with the cocktails.

The uniquely-styled, air-conditioned bedrooms feature a gourmet snack tray, complimentary still and sparkling spring water, tea and coffee making facilities, a flat screen TV and a hairdryer. The en-suite bathrooms, some of which have a freestanding bath, offer REN products, a rain-shower, bathrobes and slippers.

Torre Mozza is a hotel that takes the phrase “on the beach” to a whole new level. While half the hotel is literally on the the beach, the other half is in the sea. This fortified watchtower was built in the 16th century to watch over the ships bringing minerals from the nearby island of Elba.

Today Torre Mozza is a small exclusive hotel with 8 rooms and suites that prides itself on offering luxury in an extraordinary location on the Tuscan coast. The rugged structure of the tower provides the backdrop for a mix of modern and natural materials and antiques in a harmonious blend.

In this location it’s hardly surprising that the restaurant emphasises the tastes of the sea in partnership with the Tuscany countryside. Milanese chef Kevin Luigi Fornoni describes his cuisine as “Classic Mediterranean style, with a modern and personal touch.” Breakfast at Torre Mozza is a typically generous and varied Italian buffet. Whether enjoying breakfast or dinner, the view from restaurant extends right along the Pratoranieri beach.

All the suites overlook the sea, and are named after famous sailing ships of the past, famous for their successful ventures. Just as if you were on board one of these vessels, guests can enjoy the sea breeze and the scent of the Mediterranean Sea, while admiring the crystal clear sea and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, including Elba. Each Suite is furnished with prized historical artefacts and luxury designer furnishings, quality fabrics and top of the range comforts. They all include air-conditioning, wi-fi, a flatscreen TV with satellite channels, a safe and a minibar.

A luxury hotel standing with it's toes in the water, right on the beach on the Tuscan coast.

Originally the residence of the first Marquis of Santillana, the Casa del Marqués (https://www.littlehotels.co.uk/spain/marques.php) is a splendid luxury hotel in a splendid location. Before you even reach the hotel you will be astounded by the medieval village of Santillana Del Mar. Although a justifiably popular tourist spot, the town is far from "preserved in aspic". It's a living village, and down at the far end you may find the local farmer bringing his cows or goats up for milking.

The facade of the Casa del Marques is a bluff stone 16th century edifice with large heavy wooden doors studded with ironwork and family coats-of-arms carved in stone on the wall above. It faces directly onto one of the tiny cobbled streets. Inside, the excellent decoration balances modern convenience with all the glorious sensations of a historic building. One of the first things that will face you inside is the staircase, carved in one piece from an oak tree more than 700 years old. Then as you continue, you will want to look into every corner to discover the next carefully restored treasure.

The 15 rooms (including a suite) are all generously sized and individually decorated, following a theme of French rustic style. They are fully equipped with telephone, mini-bar, safe, coffee machine and so on, but without disturbing the classic surroundings and period details.

Our Story

Our website is an informative hotel and travel guide, created by dedicated travellers for dedicated travellers. We pick only the best small hotels in Spain, the Balearics, the Canary Islands, France, the UK, Ireland, Italy and the Caribbean. Whether you want to just chill out on a beach or explore a city or the countryside, we are here to help.

While some companies boast of listing hundreds of thousands, even millions, of hotels, we are proud to tell you that we only list a few hundred. Because we have taken the time to choose them very carefully. They are the hotels that we would want to stay in (and in some cases, we have).
