The COVID-19 outbreak continues to have a devastating impact across the globe. It is not hard to see why the crisis might provide fertile ground for fraud. The combination of financial and health threats makes people more vulnerable and creates opportunities for fraudsters. Whilst it’s not a risk you like to think about, the possibility of internal theft or fraud is one anyone who has employees or places trust in a contractor needs to take heed of.
There’s a variety of ways a worker might betray the trust they have been given, including:

- falsifying their qualifications and/or employment references;
- manipulation of invoices, receipts, bank account details and other financial documents;
- leaking exclusive data, sales leads and/or professional partnership terms which competitors have an interest in;
- misusing their official work hours or abusing flexible working time systems; and/or
- faking or exaggerating claims for travel expenses and client entertainment costs.

Many employees that commit fraud will do it for their own gain, but in some cases the organisation may be infiltrated by an organised criminal gang.

Exactly 26 years ago I became a Police Officer and commenced on a journey that would change my life forever. I was young, naive, inexperienced and full of trepidation about what I would encounter. Well,.....rather a lot, as it goes! Murders, rapes, robberies, serious fraud cases etc, as you might expect, but also some truly inspirational people.
26 years on I can look back with enormous pride at becoming a Detective in the CID and the Fraud Squad, being awarded Judges and Chief Constables Commendations, securing justice for many victims of serious crime, heading up a fraud team in the NHS, recovering money for the NHS that had been lost to fraud, and achieving a Masters Degree in fraud and corruption.
Now it is time to bring those 26 years of experience to my new venture as a full member of the ABI – CDM Investigations. A daunting prospect to set up a private investigation business? Well, yes.....but so was joining the police and I turned out to be quite good at it!

With a Police and private investigation history of over 25 years, CDM Investigations deliver the highest standard of professional service with an extensive range of experience to call upon. Prior to founding CDM Investigations our Director and Lead Investigator, Chris Morris, was a Senior Manager with one of the "big 4" and previously lead the Counter Fraud Service for a NHS Consortium as Head of Counter Fraud. He is a former police detective who has worked for both the Greater Manchester Police Commercial Fraud Unit and Serious Fraud Office, as well as having extensive experience of serious and complex investigations, having received Judges’ Commendations for the quality of his investigative work. Chris is a Graduate Counter Fraud Specialist and holds the qualification of the MSc Counter Fraud and Corruption Studies at Portsmouth University.
