🌎 Becky’s Educational Blog 🌎
Becky has come back from her work education trip this week to Sri Lanka, courtesy of Mercury Holidays. Please see below her blog and some of her highlights from the trip 🇱🇰

✈️ I flew from London Heathrow direct with Sri Lankan airlines, the staff onboard are so welcoming and helpful. With being a long journey, you are given two meals on the plane as well as snacks and refreshments during the whole journey, if needed between meals. I was also provided with a pillow, blanket and headphones to watch the in flight entertainment and there was so much to choose from including films, games and Tv shows.

🇱🇰 For Sri Lanka you do need a visa and this can be done before hand or at the airport on arrival. I recommend doing this before hand as it does cut time at the airport as there can be queues for this. Also, I recommend taking sterling with you as it is a closed currency so you have to get this when you are there. There are plenty of places at the airport on arrival and within most hotels they have the service to change your currency.

🐆 Day One In Sri Lanka
On arrival we made our way to Goldie Sands for lunch and to have a tour around the hotel. After this we made our way to Dambulla and to check in at the Occidental Paradise for dinner and overnight stay.

🐘 Day Two In Sri Lanka
We awoke early morning to make our way to Sigiriya Rock and to see the remains of the Palace. Sigiriya Rock is a popular tourist attraction in Sri Lanka and is such a beautiful location. It is best to go early hours as the heat isn’t at its peak and makes it better for climbing. We climbed 1,200 steps to get to the top and it was worth it to see the views from the top and the Palace ruins and a sense of accomplishment from completing the climb. We then made our way to Polonnaruwa, the second capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th and 12th centuries, to see the ruins of the Royal Palace, Council Hall, Lotus bath and the Polonnaruwa statue. We then made our way back to Dambulla to check in at the Amaya Lake Hotel.

🐆 Day Three In Sri Lanka
We made our way to Kandy stopping enroute at a local Spice Garden. I really enjoyed seeing all the local grown plants, herbs and trees that they use to make creams, oils and tea for all different medicines. We were able to test some of the teas and the products and was even treated to a quick shoulder and neck massage using the oils they produce which after the long climb the day before was needed. We then continued our journey onto Kandy where we took a city tour around Kandy town to see the local markets, bazaar and the mall. We were able to go around the bazaar after the tour which was nice to see all the local products and fabrics that were on offer. We then made our way to watch a local dance performance with all traditional dances and fire walking afterwards. We then took a short walk to the Temple of the Tooth Relic. This was a fantastic experience as when we arrived, they were opening the doors to the Tooth Relic and we were able to queue to get a glimpse of the casket that only stays open for 4 minutes and people offer gifts of flowers to the Tooth Relic. After this we had a look around the temple and the gardens which were all lit up at night. We then made our way to check in at the Amaya Hills for our overnight stay.

🐘 Day Four in Sri Lanka
We made our way via train to Nuwara Eliya, this took us 4 hours, and it was amazing experience as we got to see so many things along the way from waterfalls, temples, local villages and tea pickers. When we arrived, we made our way to Araliya Green Hill for lunch. After lunch we made our way to visit a tea plantation called Lovers Leap. We were able to walk and talk to one of the ladies there who showed us the process they use from picking the leaves through to it being grounded and made into either tea leaves or tea powder. The tea plantation has over 1000 workers and was established in 1840. This area is very popular with locals for them to go on their holidays as the climate is a lot cooler and they have many hotels and a lake for water sports. We then made our way to Mandara Rosen Kataragama for dinner and overnight stay.

🐆 Day 5 In Sri Lanka
Today we were up early to make our way to Yala National Park for a jeep safari to spot some of Sri Lankas famous wildlife. This is a must do if you get the chance to visit Sri Lanka as there is so much to see and the setting was amazing, seeing the sunrise and spotting the animals. We then made our way to Galle for a tour of Galle Fort. This area was developed by a number of different countries including the English, Dutch and Portuguese and this is shown within the buildings and the churches. This area was mostly destroyed back in 2004 when it was hit by a tsunami. This area does have a very British feel and even have their own post box which was made in Derby and given to the town of Galle. When the British were there, they built the first lighthouse and this was made of wood and was fire lit, this has now been replaced due to a fire that happened but they still use this lighthouse today. The area is very relaxed and peaceful hearing the waves crashing on the rocks. After lunch we then made our way to Citrus Hikkaduwa. This hotel had a very relaxed feel, the beach bar area was really relaxed and we even ventured out after lunch to a local bar.

🐘 Day 6 In Sri Lanka
We went to visit the preschool which is sponsored by Mercury Holidays. This was established in 2004 after the tsunami hit the coast of Sri Lanka destroying nearly the whole village and killing over 50,000 people. Mercury opened the school to help orphaned children who had lost their families during the tsunami, nowadays this is mainly used to help local children go to school while their families go out to work. The age range at the school is 3-5years. The children learn so much while they are there from writing, shapes and numbers. We were able to take our own gifts for the children to help while they are at school and to enjoy. We then made our way to the Turtle Hatchery where they explained and showed us what they do. They explained how they help injured or sick turtles get better before releasing them back in the wild. They also hatch eggs to help the population of various breeds of turtles, as in the wild they have a survival rate of only 10% but when laid by the mother whilst at the hatchery they have up to an 80% rate of survival. After this, we made our way to a couple of hotel visits at Pandanus Beach, Occidental Eden Garden Resort, The Palms Fort Resort, Tangerine and then on to Royal Palms where we checked in for our overnight stay.

🐆 Day 7 In Sri Lanka
We made our way in the morning to do some hotel visits and we were able to visit Mermaid Hotel, Citrus Waskaduwa, Blue Water Hotel and Tanyara Hotel. After lunch we then made our way back to Colombo to do a short city tour and to visit Aitken Spence Travel, who are the local agents who Mercury Holidays use to package their tours together for Sri Lanka. We then made our way to check in at Ramada Colombo before heading out for our farewell dinner at Mount Lavina Hotel, which is a must place to visit. This hotel has a lot of history and was used as the Governors Place by Sir Thomas Maitland back in 1805. It has views overlooking Colombo which at night is beautiful to see.
Home Time

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka is a beautiful country; the people are so welcoming and friendly. I only got to see such a small part that the country has to offer, but I would recommend to anyone to visit if they do have the opportunity to and would highly advise a tour as this way you get to see so much that maybe you wouldn’t think to do. We had the most amazing tour guide, Lakmal, who has so much knowledge about the country and was always on hand to answer any questions we had. I will be posting a tour deal tomorrow so please keep your eyes peeled 🇱🇰

Here at the new Hays Travel Skegness branch we are very sad over the recent collapse of Thomas Cook, the news has hit us particularly hard as we all worked at the Thomas Cook Skegness store.

We were delighted when Hays Travel offered us positions and an opportunity to continue to work together again as a team and provide you with amazing holidays and service.
