"We end our chat with typical Highland hospitality, with both Sadler and Halliday insisting I must visit again. Maybe I should pop up at Hogmanay. Grantown-on-Spey still has a traditional Hogmanay with dancing in the main square with a band playing from the back of a lorry, with the streets closed. The big night culminates with a firework display and the population doubles. There is certainly plenty of life in the old capital of Strathspey, which, with the help of the tireless Grantown Society, is a community firmly putting itself back on the map." Robin McKelvie, award-winning travel writer.

Many of these buildings are cared for by community organisations that tirelessly work to preserve our heritage.
Please support them whenever you can!

Be Local Scotland supports the campaign because stronger communities make better places to live, work and visit!

We have three tips on how you can support the campaign and community tourism:

Communities across Scotland own and operate a range of tourism services. By making a conscious choice on your travels you can make a difference.

stop the bus I need a …. Always support toilets! Give generously as you never know when you might need to go. More and more communities are providing services which are vital for all! Thank you.

OUR COMMUNITY OWNED TOILETS ARE OPEN

We received an email from Building Standards this afternoon giving us temporary approval to open the toilets.
There is still an issue with the shower room so this will remain locked, but we are working to resolve it as soon as possible

Good advice here for temporary locals.

Whether you're island hopping or touring the this summer, know how to navigate Scotland's country roads safely 🚗

🌧️ It's a speed limit, not a target. Drive to the road conditions.
❗ Leave plenty of time to react. Hazards can be just around the bend.
🚙 Always wear your seatbelt.
🗺️ Slow down on bends.
📵 Put away distractions like phones and sat-navs.
🐑 Be aware of livestock on the road.
⚠️ Look out for road warning for blind summits, hidden dips and farm traffic.
🚫 Use passing places efficiently, and never park in them.
⬅️ For those visiting Scotland, remember to drive on the left.

“There is something about the Kintyre Way. Well, there must be, as over the last couple of decades, I keep going back to hike another glorious stretch of this world-class walking trail. You should, too, as it not only offers breathtaking scenery, gouges deep into the peninsula’s history and opens up Scotland’s Big Five wildlife, but it is a trail inexorably bound into the communities en route. Walk the Kintyre Way, and you - as a SCOTO-style ‘temporary local’ - are walking, talking and spending money with the local communities en route. “ read the latest blog by award winning travel writer Robin McKelvie https://www.belocal.scot/stories/the-kintyre-way/
