I didn’t always work in the outdoors! I went to the University of East Anglia and the University of California, San Diego, studying Biology. I went on to become a Biology teacher in the West Midlands for 6 years. School Teaching is a great profession, but in that time I became a Summer Mountain Leader (SML), and so my eyes were opened to ‘the greater classroom of the outdoors’. I decided to switch

careers and go into the outdoors full time. I started off working as an instructor in Outdoor Education Centres in England, before working as a Teacher of Outdoor Education in South Wales - with Gower, Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire to work in! All my spare time was spent climbing, walking and going on expeditions, so as I worked my way up the teaching profession ladder, I also moved up the qualification ladder (wearing out 4 cars in the process) until I gained the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate (MIC) in 2008. At this point I left full time employment – I worked in Wales in the Summer (at many of the LEA Centres and for the British Army, instructing Adventure Training), and Scotland in the Winter. I’ve worked on expeditions in Greenland, Peru, Argentina and Tanzania, and my own trips to Peru and Europe. I moved full time to Scotland in search of the ultimate outdoor British classroom (or more accurately – playground), and settled at the base of Ben Nevis in Fort William. I am also a qualified canoe, kayak, mountain bike and caving instructor, but my passion is mountaineering and climbing, year round. Every morning I love to go to work and share my passion, live future memories, and share with my clients their new outdoor experiences.

A quick hit to Creaglea. This is a great wee crag, cleaned and developed as a sport crag as well as some very cleaned trad routes. Well done to the developing team - thank you. It’s quite exposed, so we avoided the midges, despite the lack of wind. Fun slab climbing 😀.

Ben Nevis Guides

Success on Ben Nevis today for Elizabeth and Leonardo. They did experience all 4 seasons several times during the day. Thank you to Richard for his expert leadership.
