On this day in 1542 Mary, Queen of Scots, one of the Castle's most famous residents, was born in Linlithgow Palace.

The daughter of Mary of Guise and James V ascended the throne at only 6 days old and was crowned right here in Stirling Castle's old Chapel Royal. She would spend much of her childhood in France before returning to Scotland as a young woman.

Just before Christmas in 1566, Mary threw one of the most extravagant parties that the Castle has ever seen to celebrate the baptism of her son, James. The festivities went on for three days and included an enchanted fortress built outside the castle walls, a lavish feast served by nymphs, and one of Scotland's first firework displays.

We think that might have most office Christmas parties beaten this year!
