Remembering the artist Norman Ackroyd RA.
We were given the sad news yesterday that Norman had died and it stirred some great memories. Norman contacted us in 2009 to arrange a private charter for the summer of 2010. This wasn't unusual for St Kilda but the scale of the charter was unlike any we had done previously. He wanted to visit St Kilda, the Flannan Isles, North Rona, Sula Sgeir and the Shiant Isles over a two week period.
It was an amazing experience and there is a great photograph -which I wish I could find - of our son, who was about seven at the time, sitting on the deck bench of the Hirta, legs dangling, watching Norman paint in his sketchbook with a frying pan from our galley as a makeshift palette. He had that trait which other very good artists who I have known personally have: an ability to talk to and connect with children as proper, serious wee people. Alexander didn't know that Norman was a printmaker of world stature, he wore it so lightly.
Etching is an art form pretty much unchanged from the medieval era. The image is conjured from copper plate, acid, wax, fire, smoke and inks made from ground peach stones or exotic woods and earthy minerals, and, finally, the experience and touch of the artist.
As part payment for the charter Norman agreed to Angus's request for a print of a particular view. We were thrilled with it and now have three other 'Normans' hanging at home.
This one is prized for its scale and beauty and the legend written in Norman's expressive handwriting - 'Artist's proof for Christina and Angus C'.
Our family will always treasure it.
