Ticks are 8-legged creatures that are normally picked up in woodands and grasslands between April and September. They are known to carry Lyme’s disease which has been steadily on the rise in the UK but only a small proportion of ticks do carry the bacteria. The disease causes a distinctive ‘bullseye’ rash with flu-like symptoms. Some useful tips for prevention of ticks are to:

• Wear long trousers and socks
• Stick to defined paths and try to avoid brushing against vegetation
• Wear insect repellent which contains DEET
• Check yourself and pets for ticks that may have latched on during a walk
