Brake the Cycle Creating empowering cycling adventures to eco communities, permaculture projects & creative hubs; building muscles, growing community & opening minds
(48)

We are Brake the Cycle and we love adventures. We've put together challenges that combines the empowering experience of a physical adventure with an exploration of alternative and holistic living. Combining physical adventure with conscious lifestyle choices you'll discover what you're made of, while learning how to do your part for the planet. The challenge is two fold. Firstly the physical chall

enge; pushing yourself beyond your physical and mental boundaries, being empowered and inspired by your body, supporting each other and cooperating together, being fitter and healthier than ever before, and powered by organic food. You will be physically challenged to trust your body and cooperate in a team. You'll become more healthy, eat a better diet and feel more alive and empowered. The second side of the challenge is the journey into alternative and holistic living. On our challenges we visit and stay with eco communities, housing cooperatives, transition town initiatives, permaculture projects and organic farms. We learn a combination of permaculture, social entrepreneurship and personal development from the places we visit, workshops we have and speakers we hear, taking the lessons from the road into the rest of our lives. You'll live in some of the UK's most forward thinking and visionary Eco-communities, permaculture projects and organic farms. As you explore new and alternative ways of living you'll learn the skills of a social entrepreneur and receive coaching to support your personal development. You mind will expand, your muscles will grow and your life will change.

That’s a wrap for Ride the Change 2022!

Huuuuge congratulations to everyone who joined us for a day, two days or the whole ride. Big well done. It’s safe to say, this year’s Ride the Change was a wet and wild one, sodden smiling cyclists rolling into cafes and rocking up to pubs with dripping hair and mud-sprayed faces. Just our vibe.

But just like that, it’s over.

How did it go so quickly?

Here's a snapshot summary of RTC ‘22: you should be proud.

Pledges raised: 1,361
514 supporters
112,240kg of Co2 pledged.

Miles ridden: 259 miles

Puncture Count: A LOT. TBC.

Injuries: 🫣
Everybody safe and well :)

Raffle raised: £200 for

And one last thing, thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to everyone that joined the ride this year, and especially to our sponsors: Cyan Partners, AECOM, Arup and Nonstop for stumping up the cash so we could keep this community alive and thriving.

Plus our event partners Compare your Footprint, Possible and Presca Sportswear :)

See you next year! ❤️💙💚

Day 3: Bath > Newbury

How is it the last day already? We’ve been crying all morning at the thought 😭

I think we can all agree, yesterday was the perfect day. Clear, cold, canals.. an early start.. towpaths, quiet rolling roads, mega-mega baked potatoes and ffollowed by ff-ull-on-fflapjacks. So. good.

Today is the big day, we’re off to Westminister to deliver of messages to our ‘leaders’ to take to , and ramp up our pledges, almost 1,500 right ?

Miles cycled: 197.8
Miles to go: 68.7

See you soon London.

Day 2: Newport 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 > Bath 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Wow what.a.day! A lot of bridge crossings and more leaves in the day and the Cycling Soap Box did not disappoint in the evening! Shout out to everyone who stood up, said their peace (piece?), hopped up on stage and made this evening all the more wonderful. We feel full :) Of warm vibes, community and delicious, DELISH-USH chocolate brownie.. If you didn’t get any, you missed out :)

Enjoy day 3 to Newbury riders, getting closer to the capital and delivering our message to the powers that be, to take to …

And the rain came down in torrents 🌧️

"sheets of rain", "fountain rain", "beating rain", "bucketing rain".. The Welsh language has nearly as many words for rain as Inuits do for snow.

And today, we experienced them all… once.

It was a wet wet wet afternoon that blew us into Newport, from our departure loco at the Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea. But then, it wouldn’t be Ride the Change without a Met Office Weather warning..

10 hours later it was a soggy crowd that gathered at the Newport Pavillion for inspiring stories shared on the Wheels for All initiative from the brilliant Richard Dale at , and Catrina, from Cymru on the sustainable transport initiatives across the country.

Day 1 was wet wet wet (we felt it in our fingers and toes 🎼 )

Coast and Castles 2022 🏰

As if this time last week we was rollin’ through the Tweed Valley from Berwick to Norham, and up up up to Ruberslaw Wild Woods 🌲🌲🏕🏕🌲🌲

The roads were quiet 🤫the winds were strong (and heady) 🥴 the sea cold, the gravel - gravelly but the dhal, and chickpea curry tasted all the more delishush when it finally finally defrosted from its very frozen state 🤤

This truly is one beautiful and epic route. Thank you to everyone who made it the adventure it surely was..

Northumberland : We will be back 🌞🚴🚴🏻‍♀️🚴🚴🚴🏻‍♀️🌚

THE GOOD RIDE

Wanna ride with us from Bristol to Cornwall this Sept anyone? Well, with our new 'Good Ride' collab you can!

Carrying on from the Ride the Change - Cycle to COP26 vibe, "The Good Ride - Atlantic Way, Cornwall" will take us along The Atlantic Way; 180-miles of great company, epic landscapes and rugged coastlines, plus watch a curated version of Film Festival during Goodfest under the stars!

is a Festival of creative conversations exploring how to inspire change through purposeful ideas and actions. The 2-day event will be held at Bedruthan Hotel, perched on the hill overlooking Mawgan Porth on the stunning North Coast of Cornwall. Sweet.

For the first time ever Goodfest festival go-ers (and non-festival-goers alike!) can cycle to the festival in Cornwall, the most sustainable way of getting there :)

Choose to ride the full Atlantic Way from Bristol to Bedruthan, over 3 nights, or join us along the way for one day! (available only on Day 1 - from Bristol, or Day 4 from Boscastle)

The Good Ride will build community and visit specific sustainability-inspired projects; foodie stops, coffee stops, renewable energy projects, permaculture bits and bobs, and even the Boscastle Museum of Witchcraft and Magic.. ooer.

As if this time last week we boarded the Oban ferry and sailed out together to Castlebay.

7 days, 8 islands, 5 causeways and 4 ferries later and we’re back on the mainland.

Did we cycle 260 miles? TBC TBH. The fact the GPX route included the miles sailed on the ferries has bamboozled us. And we’re yet to correct it :)

How has so much happened in a week?

Miles have been ridden, wind has been felt, damp apple cake scoffed, whiskey inhaled (and by some, chucked) and friendships forged of course of course.

All captured by the talented and brilliant 📸

What’s left to say? Apart from, how come we ended up line-dancing in an Irish pub in Stornoway when we’d been hunting for a Ceilidh all week..

Who knows.

This week has been pretty damn epic. Thank you all so much for bringing the smiley vibe 🔥

We’re coming back Oct 1-8.
