This month we're talking about double negatives. ✖✖

When two negative words (such as 'nobody', 'nowhere', 'never' or 'nothing') are used in the same sentence, we call it a double negative. This often occurs in regional dialects, and you may hear people using them in spoken English or in song lyrics.

Double negatives like this are not acceptable in formal situations or in writing. However, this 'rule' against using double negatives typically only applies to formal, standard English. When we hear double and triple negatives spoken in some regional dialects of English, it is not considered incorrect.

We're going to quiz you on double negatives all this month. If you want to brush up on your knowledge, take a look on our website: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/double-negatives-and-usage

The terrible past perfect!!!!!!

The terrible past perfect!!!!!!

The answer to this quiz was (b) arrived, had escaped. Did you get it right?
When we talk about something that happened in the past we sometimes want to refer back to something that happened before that time. We use the past perfect tense (had + past participle) to do this. Here, the expression 'by the time' tells us clearly that the thieves escaped some time before the police arrived, so we say, 'By the time the police arrived, the thieves had escaped'. World Kindness Day is an international observance on 13 November. It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, a coalition of nations' kindness NGOs.
