Traditional split rattan cane weaving. I have been caning chairs since 1982 when, at the age of 14 I caned a piano stool under the instruction of my mother.

My second go at rush seating. This is my mum's chair. It was her father's chair when he was a child so it's very small. Believed to be from about 1916. It hasn't had a seat since about 1950-ish so I re-rushed it for Mum for Christmas.
There are 2 different colours because I ran out of the English rush just before the end and the only rush I can buy locally is imported Dutch rush, hence the green cross but over time it will all fade to shades of yellow and blend in better.
The lesson learnt here is to make sure I already have more rush than I need so that I can mix part of a new bolt (a bundle of rush) with the old bolt to blend the colours evenly.
