With golf on our mind we’ve been going through collections for and have found some very early John Aitken golf clubs!!!!
John Aitken was appointed as official club maker to Royal Portrush in 1892. He also patented several golf balls including the popular 'Portrush Lily' named after his daughter, the Aitken and the Clan.
During the week returns to Portrush (14th-21st July) North Coast Auction Rooms will be hosting a unique Golf auction. This is a fantastic opportunity to get your hands on a little bit of Portrush history.

This is one of the earliest photographs of Ramore Head taken from the new harbour. If you look closely at the right hand corner you can just make out a masonary wall or structure. Is this the remains of the fort that overlooked the harbour? The map below is listed in the Calendar State Papers in 1580 and is a very early depiction of Portrush. On the map overlooking the natural harbour you can just make out the outline of a wall, possibly depicting the walls of a fort. Does the 19th Century photograph depict the last upstanding element of this fort or was it all destroyed when the new harbour was created?

A great opportunity to buy an historic print of Portrush. The map was comminssioned by the Earl of Antrim and shows his proposed design for Portrush. The original is in the Proni archive in Belfast and it shows a mix of existing buildings at the time it was drawn up and also the proposed plots.

This project will look at the archaeological evidence located at Antrim Garden's in the heart of Portrush. They plan to have a non-invasive survey to establish the extent of the archaeology. Volunteers will be able to see the experts at work and the group plans to involve local schools.

Exciting news just in!
The Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (CAF) has been appointed as the contractor to carry out the non-invasive survey of Antrim Gardens and Lansdowne as part of our Peace IV project. You can also hear more about the project tomorrow morning on BBC Radio Ulster Your Place and Mine.
