Product Manager Gary Tombs described Trinidad in Cuba as his favourite city in the world, which was quite the endorsement given how well-travelled he is.

There were many things he and Travel Expert Mary Anne Nelson loved about it, from its historic, non-developed nature to its proximity to Cuba’s bucolic beaches. Uruguay’s capital may not crop up on many visitors’ itineraries, but give Montevideo some time and you’ll soon discover its hidden charms. “In South Georgia, we had the perfect day: beautiful mountains, glaciers, blue sky and loads of king penguins walking along jostling elephant seals. All I could picture that day was David Attenborough coming out from the TV screen and showing me the beauty of the place.” - Lina Fuller

“Never did I think I would be in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, lifted up by a crane above the canopy for a unique viewpoint to admire the flora and search for fauna. A true once-in-a-lifetime experience!” - Charlotte Daubeney

“Pousada Rio Mutum in the Pantanal was a standout place to stay due to the incredible wildlife roaming the grounds. We saw so many animals, including a tapir, howler monkeys, a porcupine and blue macaws.” - Hannah Waterhouse

“I loved the little town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno in the Galápagos. As you walk along the seafront, you're likely to see turtles popping up for air, pelicans drying their wings and brightly coloured crabs scuttling around.” - Sally Watkins

“During a quick spot of river fishing, we turned around to see a giant male anteater casually strolling about 20 metres from us. We downed our rods and quickly manoeuvred ourselves downwind from him so he wouldn’t pick up our scent and be scared off. Incredibly, he came within about 3 metres of our small group and seemed to be completely oblivious of us being there – they have a great sense of smell but poor eyesight.” - Kathryn Rhodes

Where to go in March in Latin America – springtime for some parts and autumn for others, March is a pleasant time to visit Latin America. Here are some of our top recommendations:

Antigua, Guatemala – in 2026, Semana Santa will commence on 29 March, and the colonial town of Antigua is the best place to experience its festivities and the explosion of colour that comes with them.

Patagonia – as Patagonia enters its shoulder season, popular parks such as Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares become quieter and the lenga trees turn orange, adding to the already spectacular landscape.

Mendoza – visit Argentina’s wine capital at the beginning of March for its annual grape harvest festival, the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendemia, and enjoy the milder weather of autumn.

Northern Mexico – as springtime begins in Mexico, take a train trip across the colossal Copper Canyon or head out whale watching in Baja California where friendly grey whales and their calves regularly approach boats.

Award-winning presenter and writer Kate Humble recently travelled with us to El Salvador, a small yet fascinating country with plenty for travellers to discover. As anyone who's seen Springwatch might expect, Kate spent plenty of time in El Salvador's wilderness, clambering waterfalls and volcanoes and spotting wildlife, but she also enjoyed its human wonders, including charming lakeside villages and colourful towns and churches.

While the star attraction of the Iguazú Falls area is undoubtedly the breathtaking waterfalls, the surrounding region is brimming with activities that make it worth extending your stay by a day or two:
-Iguazú Bird Park - wander through enormous aviaries filled with thousands of exotic birds from Brazil and beyond, many of which have been rescued. If visiting with your family, don’t miss the nursery where baby birds are reared.
-Tres Fronteras – enjoy spectacular views of the sun setting over Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and the valley that separates them - a classic end-of-day activity for the area’s locals.
-Wildlife spotting - explore the lush forests around Iguazú Falls to spot toucans and monkeys, and at the falls themselves, keep an eye out for colourful butterflies and swifts that make their nests behind the cascading water.
-Wine and cachaca tasting - indulge in some of Brazil’s finest tipples with a guided tasting session at Belmond das Cataratas, led by an expert connoisseur.

Hiking to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail is rightly renowned as one of Latin America’s highlights, but did you know that there are also various other routes you can take to this ancient wonder?

-The One Day Inca Trail: this shortcut begins with an uphill climb to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna, from which it joins the classic Inca Trail’s route. From here, trek to the Sun Gate and enjoy the quintessential view of Machu Picchu as you round the corner.

-The Salkantay Trek: Described by National Geographic as one of the world’s most spectacular hikes, spend more time among the snowcapped peaks of the Andes on this 5-day Inca Trail alternative. A series of comfortable lodges line the route – end your days of trekking with a comfy bed and, in some cases, a whirlpool bath.

-Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain: With the citadel cradled between these two peaks, hiking up either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain offers a bird’s-eye-view of the famous ruins.

This gentoo penguin has left its Christmas shopping a bit late!
