Smiling skeletons. 💀🕯 Colourful processions. Festive picnics in the cemetery. ⚰

Today, 2 November, the Mexicans celebrate Day of the Dead or Día de los Mu***os. A life-affirming day of celebration for the deceased. Day of the Dead celebrates the return of the spirits of the deceased to Earth to be honoured by the living with all the things they loved when they were alive.

Day of the Dead is an age-old tradition dating back to the Aztecs and Mayans, more than 2,000 years before Spain colonised Mexico. The celebrations begin on 31 October, when several towns and cities kick off the festivities with parades and decorated markets, and continue until 2 November, the official Día de los Mu***os. The great day of celebration of the dead takes place all over Mexico.

Today is International Sloth Day. 🦥

The good news is you don’t have to be in too big of a hurry to celebrate these slow-moving mammals. Instead, hang out and have fun learning about these interesting mammals that are native to South and Central America.

There are two different types of sloths. These include the two-toed and three-toed sloths. There are six species of sloths. One of which is the pygmy three-toed sloth. Of all the species, the pygmy sloth is the only one that’s critically endangered.

Here are some other interesting facts about sloths:
🦥Sloths are great swimmers and they occasionally drop from their treetop perches into water for a paddle.
🦥Algae and fungus grow on a sloth’s course thick fur.
🦥Thanks to extra vertebrae in their spine, sloths can rotate their head 270 degrees in either direction.
🦥Sloths love their alone time and don’t spend a lot of time with other sloths.
🦥On average, sloths live between 20 to 30 years.
🦥A sloth’s stomach has four compartments and it takes up to a month to digest one meal.
🦥Sloths resemble monkeys or bears but their closest relatives are the armadillo and anteater.
🦥Sloths sleep up to 20 hours every day.

If you want to experience sloths up close, you can experience them in Costa Rica. See our tours here: https://www.llamatours.co.uk/costa-rica/tours.htm

Today is World Animal Day! The theme is 'shared planet' and the focus is on improving the welfare standard for animals around the world, from pets to exotic wildlife. 🦥🦙

Increasingly, travelers are choosing holidays based on how animal-friendly they are. We follow the guidelines of World Animal Protection and thereby say no to all entertainment with wild animals in captivity. It makes us very proud to say that all of our tours are classified as animal friendly. 💖

Dream of walking the world-famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 2023?

Each year, only a limited number of permits for the Inca Trail are available and registrations for 2023 are opening up in October.

When you book with Llamatours, we will organise and order your permit as soon as they are released. The best time of the year to travel to Peru is from April to October.

Do you want to go in 2023? Then we recommend booking your tour as soon as possible, as the permits tend to sell out quickly – especially for the high season (June to August).

Today is National Hummingbird Day!

We celebrate the World’s smallest winged treasure. This holiday is to recognise the magnificence of these petite birds. It also highlights their migratory descent, when they fly for more than 800 kilometres, all the way from the southern United States through Mexico and even on into Central America such as Costa Rica.

Costa Rica isn’t just a breathtaking backdrop for outdoor adventures—it’s a true hummingbird paradise. The country is home to at least 50 hummingbird species.

HUMMINGBIRDS FUN FACTS:

🌸 Hummingbirds flapping their wings an incredible 60 times per second, which to the human eye, can only be seen as a blur. They fly at an average speed of 45 miles an hour.

🌸 Hummingbirds are only found in North, Central and South America!

🌸 Hummingbirds are the smallest bird species in the world.

🌸 Hummingbirds are the only bird that can fly in all directions – including: up, down, left, right, backwards and can even hover in place!

🌸 Hummingbirds only use their legs for perching, they cannot physically walk!

🌸 Hummingbirds can consume up to double their body weight in a day.

🌸 Hummingbirds are very smart little birds! They have the largest brain and heart (proportionate to its body weight) of all animals, and remember the exact location of the plant with the best nectar year after year!

🌸 Hummingbirds visit up to 2,000-5,000 flowers to feed daily, and can consume over twice their body weight per day!

🌸 A hummingbird nest is adorably tiny and compact. They are roughly the size of a ping-pong ball (1.5 inches) – a perfect little nest for little hummingbird eggs – which themselves are the size of jelly beans!

🌸 A hummingbirds heartbeat can reach a staggering 1,200+ beats per minute during the day, but can also be slowed right down to as slow as 50-150 beats per minute when the hummingbird experiences what is known as ‘torpor’. ‘Torpor’ is a hibernation-like state that hummingbirds experience while they sleep. It allows them to conserve mass amounts of energy by lowering their body temperature!

It’s finally Taco-Tuesday! 🌮😍 South America is home to many delicious dishes and culinary experiences. It’s pretty much a safe bet no matter what country you visit. Although we are crazy about tacos, here are three other dishes that you should taste at least once in your life! 🍽️

1) Ceviche, Peru
The national dish of Peru. An extremely delicate dish consisting of fresh fish and seafood marinated in citrus.
2) Chimichurri, Argentina
A savoury green salsa, made with finely chopped parsley, garlic, and vinegar. It’s the perfect addition to grilled meat or fish.
3) Ropa Vieja, Cuba
A shredded beef dish with black beans, white wine, and red peppers. Its amusing name comes from the Spanish term, meaning “Old clothes”.

Ready to delight your taste buds? Find your tour to South America here: www.llamatours.co.uk

The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining (sometimes) and Easter is almost here! 🐣🌤️

The week leading up to Easter Sunday or "Semanta Santa" is a very special time in Latin America. Most celebrate by attending church and many throw fiestas with singing, dancing and fireworks.

E.g. in Costa Rica, they hold large, colourful processions and enjoy traditional dishes such as Tamal Mudo which consists of fish and seafood wrapped in delicious corn dough.

This is one of the many reasons Costa Rica is one of our most popular Easter holiday destinations.

Would you like to make the world-famous Inca trek during the summer holiday?

Then you’ll have to book now!

We’ve just checked the status of the permits, and there are (still) available spaces during July and August.

We recommend joining the trek during the period from April to November, when the weather is at its best in the Andes Mountains. But competition is fierce for the remaining spots - so make sure you book as far ahead as possible.

Today, 21 March, is International Day of Forests 🌲🌳🌴

And in Costa Rica, a true success story awaits.

In the 1970s, woodland only covered around 25% of Costa Rica due to deforestation. But in the years since then, the government has managed to turn a negative trend into a positive one, including the establishment of national parks and making deforestation illegal. As a result, almost 60% of Costa Rica is now covered by forest and around 25% of Costa Rica consists of national parks.

Amazing!

Three great cultures and peoples ruled South and Mesoamerica before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century.

One of these peoples was the Mayans, who lived in Mexico, among other places, from around 800 BC to 1530 AD.

Skilled engineers and mathematicians, they managed to build huge temple pyramids and even entire cities such as Palenque in Mexico and Tikal in Guatemala.

Besides the Mayans, the Incas and the Aztecs also left many traces behind them in Latin America, and their ruins, buildings and cultures can still be experienced on many of our tours.

We compare the 3 civilisations right here: https://www.llamatours.co.uk/blog/maya-incas-and-aztecs.htm

Want to know more about 3 of South America’s great civilisations? Who were they and what are the differences between them? Find out more here!
