Another one finished off today. We love making those changes, so you don't have to 😁.

Good progress on the latest project after only 4 days. 16 tonnes of soil removed, 8 tonnes of hard-core brought it 💪.

If Carlsberg did neighbours, this is the guy! Barry is a neighbour of my recent customer. He has kept us well watered throughout the week whilst my busy customer has been working......and enjoying a cocktail on the beach on holiday 😀 Cheers Barry!

Delighted to get this all finished off today. We laid a new patio and 2 front paths a couple of weeks ago. We came back today to install new artificial grass, as the old one was too far gone from all the ground works that was done for our customers new back garden hair salon. Fresh cuts in a fresh, modern garden for all her customers. Connor and I wish you all the best in your new venture xx

Today I was helping out another local company, I've helped before. Sometimes, you have to give the customer what the customer wants, even if that's cross joints 🤦🏽‍♂️🤢😂 to match their other patio. Still, cross joints aside, it has still come out, just right 👌 Those cuts though 😍

First time redoing a driveway for us. WJ Frost Groundworks came in and provided the finishing touches and laid the tarmac. They've done a cracking job, and I would highly recommend and use them again.

For the first time in all my years of landscaping, I set up a second job and had a team of two do the job on their own, whilst i work on another. If one Connor wasn't already enough, I got a second one in to tackle this project together. They quickly became known as Connor 1 and Connor 2 by the customer 😁 I think they have done a fine job on this. Although I was popping in and keeping an eye on things, I'm really pleased they have delivered this beautiful garden for the customer and her daughters and kept to my high standards in the process. Thanks Lads, onto the next one 💪❤️

Today I went to look at a garden with Ben Smy from BS Groundworks, that was done by another local landscaper, just last year. The customer has not been happy since, especially after paying a lot of money for a full garden makeover. The workmanship is below standard to say the least. The sandstone patio was spot laid throughout and in some parts straight onto clay/soil (no sub base) and without a primer. The list is endless and it is the second time this year I've been to look at a job done by this company. The after care has been non existent with this customer feeling quite threatened at times. Choose wisely when you want your garden done, choose me! 😁

A CONVERSATION ABOUT PERCEIVED VALUE:

A customer asked a contractor how much it would cost to do this project.

The contractor gave him a quote: £4500

The customer responded: That’s seems really high.

The contractor asked: What do you think is a reasonable price for this job?

The customer answered: £2500 maximum

The contractor responded: Ok, then I invite you to do it yourself.

The customer answered: I don't know how to.

The contractor said: Alright, then how about for £2500 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you £2000, you'll learn valuable skills that will benefit you in the future.

The customer answered: Sounds good! Let’s do it!

The contractor responded: Great! To get started, you are going to need some tools. You will need a chop saw, table saw, cordless drill, bit set, router, skill saw, jig saw, tool belt, hammer, etc..

The customer answered: But I don't have any of those tools and I can't justify buying all of these for one job.

The contractor responded: Ok. Well then for an additional £300 I can rent my tools to you to use for this project.

The customer answered: Okay. That’s fair.

The contractor responded: Great! We will start the project on Monday.

The customer answered: I work Monday through Friday. I’m only available on the weekends.

The contractor responded: If you want to learn from me then you will need to work when I work. This project will take 3 days so you will need to take 3 days off work.

The customer answered: That means I’m going to have to sacrifice my pay for 3 days or use my vacation time!

The contractor responded: That’s true. Remember, when you do a job yourself you need to account for unproductive factors.

The customer answered: What do you mean by that?

The contractor responded: Doing a job completely from start to finish includes time spent to plan the project, pick up materials, travel time, gas, set up time, clean up, and waste disposal amongst other things. That’s all in addition to the actual project itself. And speaking of materials, that’s where we will start on Monday so I need you to meet me at the lumberyard at 6:00am.

The customer answered: At 6am?!! My work day doesn’t usually start until 8am!

The contractor responded: Well then you’re in luck! My plan is to start on the deck build by 8am. But to do so we have to start at 6am to get materials picked up, loaded and delivered to your job site.

The customer answered: You know, I’m realizing that a lot more goes in to a job than what a customer sees in the finished project. Your quote of £4500 is very reasonable. I would like you to handle the project.

CONCLUSION:

When you pay for a job, especially a custom job, (whether it’s a physical project or digital project) you pay not only for the material and the work to be completed. You also pay for:

✔️ Knowledge
✔️ Experience
✔️ Custom Skills
✔️ Tools
✔️ Time to plan
✔️ Time to prepare
✔️ Professionalism
✔️ Work Ethic
✔️ Excellence
✔️ Discipline
✔️ Commitment
✔️ Integrity
✔️ Taxes
✔️ Licenses
✔️ Sacrifices
✔️ Liabilities
✔️ Insurance

If you request a quote for custom work to be done, please don’t disrespect a service provider by trying to get them to lower their prices.

If their quote exceeds your budget, there’s nothing wrong with getting other quotes.

Just remember.. you get what you pay for.

👉🏼 SERVICE PROVIDERS: Know your worth and be confident in it.

👉🏼 CONSUMERS: Recognise their worth and be respectful of it.

I did not write this but had it saved in the past and wanted to share.

A couple of jobs finished off this week. The porcelain patio was done on behalf another local fencing and Landscaping company, Wadham Fencing and Landscapes. They asked for help to take on this project, I obliged and have created this amazing patio area that replaces an old rotten decking. It's always great teaming up with other local companies to lend a hand now and again.

Recently I've teamed up with BS Groundworks to help them install new sewage treatment plants. Sounds honking right? trust me, it isn't! A lot of properties in the area are not linked up to the sewer network, so they have septic tanks, these septic tanks are outdated and not great for the environment, and the property cannot be sold without a new, water treatment plant in place. These plants treat the sewage waste from the house, and sends the treated, clean water (not drinkable 🤢) back out into, either a soakaway or stream, at the back of the garden. Low, yearly running costs and environmentally friendly. Get in touch if this is something you, or know someone that needs this doing.

It's been over 2 years since I've posted anything to my page 🤦🏽 but here's a few projects I've done in that time. A good mix of designs. What is your style these days? I'm seeing lots of different tastes in landscape design, from the modern instagramme look, using sleepers, porcelain tiles and artificial grass to the more natural look, with sandstone and REAL grass. 😁

Finished this Victorian, mid terrace courtyard garden today. We unearthed granite cobbles when taking out the existing patio and concrete, so we used them to edge the back of the patio. We've given this garden a good sized entertaining area to enjoy the sun, as well as artificial grass to soften the edges of the rest of the garden, making it a very low maintenance space to enjoy all year round.

We've been working on this courtyard garden on a Victorian town house over the last 4 days. We've done so much already and it's starting to come back together with a huge difference. Keep an eye out for the end result next week.
