🎈 in 1868, Robert Falcon Scott was born. Coined 'Scott of the Antarctic', he is a key figure in the history of polar exploration and science.

Though Scott's Antarctic career began aboard Discovery in 1901, his days in the navy started when he was just 13.

After an impressive start in the Navy, he went on to lead two pioneering polar expeditions (in 1901 and in 1910). Captain Scott's approach blended scientific thinking and a desire to explore - and ultimately, to reach the South Pole.

On their fateful return journey from the South Pole in 1912, Scott & his polar party continued to carry geological specimens collected along the way; an indication of his commitment to the furthering of scientific knowledge on the Antarctic continent.

As we commemorate the 157th birthday of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, we reflect not only on his extraordinary achievements but also on the indomitable spirit that defined his life.

It's an honour to share this remarkable legacy with explorers of all ages here at Discovery Point, home of the RRS Discovery.

This epic ruin is St Andrews Cathedral in Fife, once the largest church anywhere in Scotland and even today its enormous towers defy gravity to poke the sky!

St Andrew is our patron saint, but how did a man born in Galilee, who died in Greece, become so associated with Scotland?

Legend claims that in the 4th century, St Rule had a dream that the Apostle's bones weren't safe in Greece anymore. An angel told him to take them in a boat and sail to the ends of the earth. Wherever his boat landed, that was where he was to set up his church.

Apparently this wee corner of Fife counts as the ends of the earth. Whether the story is true or not, a religious community here grew into St Rules Church and its big square tower still stands amongst the ruins. If you meet a monk on the steps inside then don't worry, he's a friendly ghost who gives weary climbers a hand...

St Andrews Cathedral wasn't far behind St Rules but it was so large, succumbing to storms and wars through construction, that it took 150 years to complete. In 1318, Robert the Bruce finally oversaw the consecration and allegedly rode his horse down the aisle!

The pilgrimage to St Andrews Cathedral was one of the great European journeys outside Rome. Scotland's largest church became incredibly wealthy but couldn't survive the ravages of the 16th century Reformation.

The Cathedral may have tumbled down but the town is still a pilgrimage spot today, just for golfers, students, tourists and people seeking out a delicious Fisher & Donaldson Fudge doughnut...
