Gaustatoppen Norway Sunset Descent | 19 April 2024
On our end of season company ski weekend in Gausta, more experienced members of the Ski Safari team were lucky enough to enjoy a stunning sunset descent from Gaustatoppen.
As it was 9pm, conditions were icy right at the top but soon gave way to lovely soft snow, with whole areas of untouched powder despite it being days since the last snowfall.
The gentlest route down Gaustatoppen is marked but unpisted and unpatrolled, suitable for entry-level off-piste skiers when conditions are good.
Our team headed off the marked trail with the help of Sturla from Gausta Topptur - who we highly recommend for anyone wanting to take on the exciting descent.
For those who don't know, even the trip up to Gaustatoppen is exciting, taking an electric tram 850 metres horizontally into the mountain before switching to a vertical tramway which takes you up 1,040 metres at 39 degrees.
The whole journey takes around 15 minutes and it feels like you're making your way into a James Bond villain's lair.

The final resort of Andy Knights and Rupert’s visit to Lake Tahoe this Spring was Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Here’s Andy’s assessment of their time in the South Lake Tahoe resort:
“Kirkwood flies under the radar for many Brits, which is a shame because there’s such great value to be found here. For £420, you have access to Kirkwood, Northstar and Heavenly all season long. Of the three resorts, Kirkwood is where you truly put your skills to the test, with terrain comparable to Kicking Horse and Jackson Hole, known for their challenging steep slopes.
Undeterred by the challenge, we embarked on the stunning hour-long drive from Heavenly. A brief walk led us to the Wall chairlift, serving expert-only terrain with no easy way down. The entrance to this section boasted a daunting 45-degree pitch, and we couldn't help but chuckle nervously at the sign warning of a long slide if one were to fall. As we reached the top, we witnessed a confident skier take the plunge, only to stumble after a single turn and slide an impressive 300 meters. Nevertheless, we gathered our courage and tackled the descent ourselves, managing to stay upright the whole way down!
We then ventured to one of Kirkwood's best features: the steep blue and black bowls of Sunrise Bowl. With not a soul in sight, we spent four exhilarating hours exploring its varied terrain and enjoying unparalleled views. Skiing Sunrise Bowl was the perfect conclusion to our unforgettable Tahoe trip.
Our experience at Kirkwood reaffirmed why Tahoe should be on everyone's bucket list. It offers incredible value for money, breathtaking scenery, and unbeatable snow conditions. The laid-back California vibe adds to the enjoyment, ensuring a memorable ski experience. With new hotels, exciting ski safaris, and a determination to share this gem with others, we can't wait to return and spread the joy of skiing in Tahoe.”

🇳🇴⛷️ If you’re one of the hundreds of Ski Safari lucky enough to be heading to Norway for your half term ski holiday this weekend, this is a taste of what’s in store…
Just over a week ago, six members of the Ski Safari team travelled to four of our favourite Norwegian resorts and here’s what they found:
Beitostølen - a family run resort with gentle and blissfully quiet slopes (the Saturday night afterski wasn’t so quiet though!)
Geilo - an award-winning destination with a vast network of runs suitable for budding beginners and intermediates. One of the best resorts in the world for families.
Gausta - the latest addition to our programme. The powder and varied terrain provided all of us with a challenge and the night skiing meant we had even more time to enjoy the brilliant conditions and soak up the dramatic scenery.
A trip to the heavy water cellar and Gaustatoppen make it a really unique skiing destination!
Norefjell - soothing spas and premier powder was the ideal way to wrap up the epic trip. There’s a fantastic section of backcountry skiing to explore here.
The snow conditions in Norway are incredible right now and the quiet slopes mean they’ll stay that way. We hope everyone has a brilliant week wherever they’re heading, and watch this space for more content from our team…
Think Sweden doesn't know how to après (or 'after ski' as they call it)? Think again!
Richard and Andy Hemingway showed us how they got their Friday feeling earlier today by having a ball in Stöten, as they continued their journey across Scandinavia.
Four more members of the team are set to join them tomorrow in Beitostølen... Keep your eyes peeled for more team updates from Norway!

Our marketing executive Matt had plenty of fresh snow to get stuck into when he skied Vail last week. Here’s what he thought:
“The thing that has wowed me while skiing Vail is just how vast it feels. It’s the largest single ski mountain in North America and some of the trails feel like they’ll go on forever.
The conditions were fab too. Vail had a good snow dump the night before I skied it (around 15cm) so there was plenty of fresh snow to ski.
The back bowls weren’t open yet, but the guys in the resort told me that with a couple more storms they’ll be ready for skiing!
As a lower-intermediate skier, Vail offered a great challenge for me, especially descending a black bump run topped with fresh snow. I’d say you’ll love Vail if you’re an intermediate or advanced skier looking for some exhilaration on steep slopes!”
If you’re looking for sensational skiing experiences, a multi-resort trip to Colorado has to be up there. Ski Safari marketing executive Matt is lucky enough to be doing just that this week, skiing Breckenridge, Vail and Beaver Creek.
Matt had an absolutely splendid time skiing Breckenridge Ski Resort yesterday and discovered why it’s such a favourite for UK skiers. Here’s what he had to say about his day on the slopes:
“Breckenridge was the perfect start to the ski season for me. Its network of cruisy groomers, particularly on Peak 9, was so much fun to ski and great for finding my ski legs again.
Staying at the excellent slopeside One Ski Hill Place was a treat, with the gondolas just outside.
This is all before mentioning the astonishing views you see from the runs in Breck. I was lucky to be skiing on a crystal clear day and had perfect views of the majestic Colorado Rockies. It’s almost worth a visit just for them!
Big thanks to Hannah and Amanda from Vail Resorts for showing me and my fellow Breckenridge first-timers around the ski area and the resort, I had an absolute blast!”

It's not just early-season snow that Norefjell does well. This was how the resort looked back in April! Not quite the sunshine that Rupert and Andy E were hoping for over the Easter holidays, but who's going to complain when they have so much fresh snow to themselves?
