So after a period of grieving the loss of my driving licence it’s time to re-generate Lanes Tracks and Trails on a different basis.

Not as a Professional Tour Companh but as a Guide in the passenger seat of participating vehicles.

It’s not for profit, but as you might have worked out I’ll need picking up
and dropping off.

So first step is to gather “volunteer leaders” to familiarise themselves with route(s) and Risk Assessments and H&S.

Hoping to start tours in October.

In order to avoid insurance costs these tour must be free to participants so there will be no remuneration for any of us.

So, the 20th July has past and there has been no one or organisation with the ambition to take on the brand as a new guide or existing guide wishing to expand their operations with well tried and tested ready to run routes.

So the website comes down this weekend, the routes get deleted from the databases and the equipment will appear next week in the Lanes Tracks and Trails - Equipment Guide page over the coming week.

Collection only I’m afraid.

So, it’s nearly a month now since my Driving Licence was revoked on Medicsl Grounds and discussions of evolving Lanes Tracks and Trails seem not be coming to any definitive conclusions.

Therefore there are two options left:-

First one is to offer the ”brand” for sale.

Second option is the break the whole thing up selling vehicle, recovery equipment, Comms equipment.

This process will begin in two weeks if the brand sale does not happen

“”Just when I was looking forward to retiring and spending more time developing the routes for Lanes Tracks and Trails together with increasing the knowledge of Cornwall’s lanes life has kicked back with a diagnosis of Glaucoma and now subject to DVLA eye tests.

So after 15 years of leading tours and quite a few years as an Area Rep in both Devon and Cornwall it seems that my days in the lanes are numbered.

The impact on any tours is that the quality of days out would definitely fall as more concentrated effort would be needed to navigate hazards and terrain and thats not something I would ever want to happen.

There have been many highs along the way, including overseas clients from Norway, Holland, France, Channel Islands and even Switzerland.

Spending days out with the 4x4 magazines planning and sharing routes for their readers and providing that essential local knowledge.

Many many regular clients who’ve come back time after time, as well as complete newcomers who have gone away accomplished drivers. The smiles and the “thank yous” have been incredible.

Running tours on a Salisbury Plain and attracting the wrath of the “protectors” of the Plain was a case of absolute farcity. I’d contacted the SPTA prior to running trips asking if was ok to do so and giving them my website details. The response was along the lines of “Well at least you know where you are going and thank you for letting us know!”.

The lows were the constant sniping from some with regard to being a tour guide conflicting with being a rep!

The answer was to offer anyone on a guided trip a significant discount as a member of GLASS and allow them to join before booking. Must have recruited at least 25 members in that basis.

Routes were readily given away to “members” and non members who wanted to organise their own trips and advice was free and unrestricted. The two roles intertwined and provides the basis to introduce newbies to the hobby on the right track from the very beginning and installing the right ethical practices.

It’s so sad to end this way but it’s better to go out on top as they say, there is an opportunity for someone to takeover the reigns at Lanes Tracks and Trails if they do wish, ( before the infrastructure is dismantled)(mwith my continued input in the short term), and a well equipped Blue Surf on the drive looking for a new home along with a raft of other kit to disperse.

I will hold the fort as Cornwall Rep in the meantime and hope that one of the Assistant Reps will step up to lead the team in the future, my support will always be available as will being a navigator on occasions if invited to do so.

As we head out of 2021 into 2022 we would like to thank all of our “Tourers” for their support and their patience. The new variant of COVID brings a new challenge, one of my household works with extremely vulnerable people and the knock on effect is that our events may have to be postponed for January. In the meantime everyone have a peaceful Christmas and New Year. Let’s come out in the aftermath and enjoy some great tours and events in 2022
