As Armistice Day nears this year, I remember, again, our local village of Knowlton - one of the ‘Thankful Villages’ - The Blog also features the RAF Association Poppy pin with the Lancaster proudly displayed.

The sun shone brightly as the town of Sandwich proudly hosted ‘Speakers Day’ - an annual event hosted by the Mayor of one of the Head Ports or ‘Antient Towns’ in the Confederation of the Cinque Ports. The role of Speaker is held by one of the Mayors of one of the 7 towns, changing over in May each year. A very old ‘office’ from at least 1357, pre-dating the post of Speaker in the House of Commons. Today, ceremonial, with plenty of pomp and circumstance! Once these 7 Head Ports, aided by neighbouring ‘limbs’ throughout Kent and Sussex provided Ship Service for the Monarch, before the advent of the Royal Navy.

Congratulations to our newly qualified SE England Blue Badge Tourist Guides. The graduation ceremony took place in the splendid Guildhall, Rochester, Kent. Pictured here with their tutors, they are ready and enthusiastic to share the treasures of this glorious region with our visitors. White Cliffs, magnificent Cathedrals, stately homes and castles nestle amongst vineyards and picturesque gardens. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

On this day in 1662 the first recorded Punch & Judy Show in Britain took place In London's Covent Garden.

So where better to mark this piece of street puppeteering history than at the Punch & Judy pub in Covent Garden - built in 1787 and named after the famous Punch & Judy puppet shows performed for the children of the flower sellers here.

With its roots in the 16th century Italian commedia dell'arte, the Punch & Judy shows have necessarily had to update their content but Mr Punch, his wife Judy, The Babe, Policeman Jack, The Crocodile, Skeleton & Doctor and Toby the Dog live on, 362 years after they first appeared. Now, that's the way to do it!
