Snowdon itself, at 3,560 feet (1,085m), is obviously the prime destination for many with the most popular routes to the summit being the Llanberis Path which takes you along the Snowdon Mountain Railway track and should take about 6 hours to walk the 9 miles there and back. Capel Salem is worth a visit next time you are in Llanbedr.

This is Salem, painted in 1908 by the English painter Sydney Curnow Vosper, depicting a scene in Capel Salem, in Pentre Gwynfryn in Gwynedd. The striking image was painted at Salem Chapel in Llanbedr, near Harlech, which is still in use today and remains practically unchanged since the artist's visit in the early 20th Century. Its central character is Siân Owen of Ty’n y Fawnog, a member of the chapel congregation dressed in traditional Welsh costume.
However in the fold of her shawl - if you really look - a demonic face can be made out.
Some believed that the image of the devil was a warning to others against the sin of vanity, something Siân Owen was displaying by dressing extravagantly to attend chapel. Many also speculate that Siân Owen represented the figure of the ‘Mam’ in 19th century Wales.
She was over 70 years old when the painting was created and went on to tragically lose two of her grandsons in the First World War. This gives an even heavier poignancy to the painting, when thinking of her symbolism as the Welsh mother and of the thousands of other Welsh mothers whose children were tragically killed during the two world wars.
