Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week is a week-long campaign dedicated to talking about mental health problems during and after pregnancy.

The overall theme of this year’s Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week is ‘The Power Of Connection’. It is so important in a time that can feel overwhelming and isolating to allow yourself the power of connection. Traditionally having young children would have been a time of connection within a community but we are having to work harder and harder to ensure this happens now.

Adventure Babies is a great place to meet new parents and enjoy the power of connection and support that can be gained by spending time with other new parents!

We will be raising these topics in our classes this week and discussing the power of connection and supporting each other!

Each day there will be a different topic and Monday's is....

? "Perinatal mental health" refers to a mental health during pregnancy and the early years after birth.

Examples of perinatal mental health problems include antenatal and/or postnatal depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, postpartum psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These illnesses can be mild, moderate or severe, requiring different kinds of care or treatment.

Check our Top Tips for reading to babies to help support their language development…

Try to read every day or several times a day for short amounts of time.

Let your baby choose the book from the bookshelf and don’t be surprised or disappointed when they choose the same book again and again...

If you baby is big enough let them help you turn the pages, this is great for their coordination and motor skill development!

Read the story with lots of expression, don’t worry babies won’t judge you! Try and make the characters sound different and point to them when they are talking. If the book has animals have fun making the animal noises for your baby to copy. Ask your baby questions such as where is the fox? And help them point to them on the page.

Talk to your baby about each page. Name things that you can see in the illustrations and point them out. This is brilliant for building vocabulary. Take time to say the word slowly with your baby looking at your face whilst you do and if they start trying to say the word repeat what they said to you and then repeat the word again properly. If you can remember point out toys or real animals or flowers as the day goes on to reinforce the words you have been sharing.

Hopefully reading will be a shared enjoyable bonding activity for you and your baby and will help them to fall in love with books and reading, support their language and communication development and teach them about the world around them.

When Adventure Babies started in Manchester in 2013 I only had about three bookings for my classes and I was feeling understandably nervous about the reality of running a baby class!

A wonderful lady called Claire who ran a class called Pram Active, now (a class that I loved and regularly attended, you can tell by my smile in the pic!) did such a kind thing that I will always be grateful for. Claire offered to tell her group of mums about my classes and so through word of mouth and recommendations Adventure Babies not only began but took off!

Looking through our website now 9 years later I am still blown away by how many bookings come through word of mouth and recommendations. It must mean that you love our classes so much that you tell your friends! That means so much to me.
