Day5:
5am breakfast
Today was Pilanesburg national park.
This was a LOT of driving and a very long day but our early start and 9am arrival to the Park found us with a guide that found us quite a few of the big 5, plus some extras.
Elephants that came right up to our car, a rare sighting of a leopard basking in the sun, which then crossed the road, walked down the side of the car in front and led down, White Rhino - Mr Rhino was very territorial and when we were turning the car around as they were blocking the road, he was getting ready to charge.
Then we found 3 cheaters 2 young ones and mum. They weren’t as close in the pictures.
After a pit stop we also found some hippos.
No lions were reported for sightings that day but the park is huge and apparently takes 12 hours to drive across. We had a 3 hour spot BUT we were very lucky.
No activities in the evening apart from happy hour.

Safari in South Africa
Day 3: early start breakfast for 5:30am
For a 6am departure to Welgevoden Game reserve (Big 5)
Now, I know we are in South Africa but let me tell you that the mornings are freezing and the nights are cold and the wind can make it feel even colder. Make sure you pack warm clothes you will need it for any nighttime drives or early morning drives.
It was bitter
We found white Rinos that came right past our car and elephants in the distance. By a watering hole a herd of water buffalo showed up.
When we got back we had the afternoon to do as we please.
At 19:30pm we went to have a bush dinner, followed by a night safari we didn’t find anything interesting unfortunately.

Day 2:
Breakfast 9am
At 10am we went out on a drive with a wildlife talk & about everything coming up in the week and Additional excursions.
Additional excursions on the week we stayed and their costs are in the last picture.

If you opt for all of them, they offer a discount. These can only be booked at the lodge and again paid for at the end of your stay.
Whilst out driving saw a few animals but as came to the end, we found a group of giraffes quite close up.
We drove to the Spa (which was lovely). Each lodge as there are 3 on the reserve gets set days for spa use.

There is also a stop to the curiosity shop.
After the drive it was around 12:15 in time for a buffet lunch.
We had about an hour and a half after lunch to chill out before our next outing which was a three hour drive around the reserve by now we established our cars and guides our guide is called basil.
Whilst we were out, we saw a number of animals including a crocodile actually a couple of crocodiles and lots of babies, warthog, ostrich, giraffe, some kind of lizard can’t remember what it was called.
After the drive, we got back about 6:30 which was happy hour at the bar 241 on cocktails if you didn’t already have a package.
Dinner:
It was a camembert spring roll for starters
For main it was sweet-and-sour vegetables, egg fried rice salad warthog with noodles, crispy chicken in sesame seed type sauce and crispy peppered beef with broccoli.
For desert it was a orange jelly Panna cotta and it was infused with something but it tasted like the smell of stinging nettles when you walk through the woods after a rainy day.
Shortly after dinner, I run a nice bath deep bath. I was trying to get an early night because we had to be up for breakfast for 530 in the morning.

✈️Flight upgrade highly recommended!!

The Airport arrivals were quite easy, no problems really with bag collection.
Changing currency took ages for everyone waiting. Do it at home
Rep was waiting for us. 27 people from the same flight.
The trip from Johannesburg to the lodge is around 4 hours but that includes 2 stops. About 2.5 hours in, One for fuel/rest room and snacks then about 5 mins down the road is lunch with a gift/cake/home made food goodies shop.
The lunch included a champagne drink.
From there is it about 1 hour ish to the lodge.

On arrival everyone is physically shattered because we arrived about 4:50pm to the lodge so we’d personally been travelling by this time about 24hours.
You are welcomed with a refreshing drink.
A light buffet has been prepared for us too.
Asked to meet back at 7pm for an introduction/explanation of what’s going on the next day.
Bags are delivered to your rooms and you are shown your apartment. Elephant lodge has around 30 guests in total. 29 of us came from the airport together.
Each apartment is rather large. See pictures for ours. We got Warthog, over looking the reserve where in the dry season they place food for the animals.
They rotate a feeding pattern. They do this to encourage animals to come closer to the look out posts (which is right by our apartment) and to offer the animals extra nourishment.
We also ended up with a new friend. The lodge has a resident cat called Donny and he spent a couple of hours making himself at home whilst we freshened up.
Dinner was at 8pm after the talk.
The talk included a South African wine taste and a local cream liquor.
Dinner included avocado creamed with onion & tomato on top of orange segments with a side of sweet/slightly spicy (almost sweet chilli) sauce.
Mains were Kudu steak, douphinse potatoes and veg. The meat was cooked beautifully tender.
Pudding followed as creme brûlée with a biscotti - I didn’t get a picture as I forgot and it’s one of my fav puddings.

We all went to bed quite promptly as you can imagine.
Bed was very firm it was nice to lay flat though.

Things To note: you can book just full board and pay for your drinks as and when.
Or inclusive all drinks are included.
You can book the drinks package in advance or opt when you arrive.
The lodge prices are in Euros and it is a card only site- you pay you bill at the end of your stay.
We opted for all inclusive when booking so we could continue to spread the cost.
