Hi everybody. So, there's been a lot of stuff in the pipeline and the first thing is the walks I'm doing, in conjunction with VANS.
So, thanks to funding from the NHS, we're able to offer these walks in May (and June, July and August). They're not my usual 'history' walks, but shorter ones, based on very accessable routes and always on a Wednesday lunchtime. On many of them, we'll try to get in a bit of relaxation/mindful breathing exercises as well. These will be very short and not scary and won't involve any stretchy yoga stuff or anything like that.
We're starting in May to coincide with National Walking Month and because the weather is, slowly, getting better.
Feel free to join us, the walks are free. Just give me a call or text or email to let me know you're coming, so I can keep tabs on the numbers....but you can just turn up as well, if you make a spur of the moment decision.
More soon.

Hi everybody, there's still places for the St Georges Day walk, this Sunday 23rd April, 2pm.
We're heading up to Worlebury woods and the hillfort. As well as talking about the people who built it and what happened to them, we'll also do a bit of tree identification and look at the current ecology up there. It'll take about an hour and a half or so. Cost for this walk ÂŁ7, children come free. This route is good for dogs as well. It is pretty much all off-road and there some steps at the beginning bit of the walk. To book, please contact [email protected] or 07947710529.
Hope to see you there, start details on booking.

St Georges Day Walk, Sunday 23rd April
Hi everybody and now that Spring is here (officially), we're going to move out of the town itself and go up into the woods.
This walk will take us up into Worlebury Woods, which is absolutely lovely in the early spring. We'll look at the hillfort there and talk about who built it and why and what happened to them. We can also talk about the tree felling which took place up there earlier in the year and perhaps we can compare how much damage the Romans did compared to the Council, or why they felt the need to fell quite so many trees. This walk will take about 1 and a half hours or so.
For start time and place and to book, please contact me on 07947710529 or email
[email protected]
Cost is ÂŁ7, children and dogs (well behaved ones) come free.
Hope to see you there.

Want to learn more about your local trees? Join us in Ellenborough Park West at 11am on Wednesday 15th March to hear from tree expert Steve Clark, who will be leading a guided walk around the park.
We will meet by the noticeboard at the entrance opposite Corpus Christi school before the session. This event is completely free of charge and is a wonderful opportunity to ask questions about a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The park has sandy soil and does not get particularly muddy, so the session will go ahead unless conditions are very bad. Any questions please get in touch with [email protected].

Lifeboat week returns.
Weston-super-Mare RNLI fund raising and operational teams are pleased to announce that they will be organising a week of fun events as part of a 2023 Weston Lifeboat Week.

The events will be held between the 19th and 28th of August 2023 at a number of sites between the RNLI shop at The Cove on Marine Lake and the Grand Pier, who are supporting the week’s events.

The plans are still in their infancy but it is hoped that a series of “pop up” water safety events, boat displays and information displays on our journey back to Birnbeck Island. In addition it will include traditional favourites such as a Raft race, lifeboat pull and displays by the volunteer crews and their emergency service partners in the sea between Knightstone Island and the Grand Pier.

A Weston favourite and regular supporter of the volunteer crews, Six Machine, will be providing the music for 200 supporters to join us for a “Count Down to our 200th Birthday” party at the Grand Pier on Friday 25th August. (Full details and tickets will be available later).

Two days will be dedicated to Pirate themed children’s events at the RNLI’s Marine Lake sites, providing fun, entertainment and at the same time delivering important water safety messages to our younger supporters.

If anyone is interested in helping put on these or the many other events we run throughout the year please consider joining our events team by contacting …. [email protected]

As the plans are developed, we will share the programme with you and hope that many of you will be able to attend one or more of the events and support your local RNLI volunteers as we approach our 200th anniversary year in 2024.

Mothers Day Town Walk Sunday 19th March
So, here we are with this months' shorter walk, about 1 and half hours more or less. We start in town and look at some of the Gems of Weston (from the Museums guide, which focuses on the later Victorian period and local architectural style of Hans Price), but we'll also look at some of my own 'hidden gems' and finish up near Knightstone. We can talk about the railway and its influence on the town as well as a bit of the darker, earlier history of this area. This is really part 2 of my Town walks, so if you came on the one last month, then this is the follow on from that one.
As it's Mothers Day, I suspect the town will be busy, so I will try to go by quieter routes and it won't be a great treck.
I'll be starting at 12 noon, so we're done in good time for Sunday lunches, which are an essential part of Mothers Day.
ÂŁ7 per head, children come free and please book with your name and number of people coming along by text or email
