Blackpool and The IlluminationsThis is a little different from our usual walks, starting in the afternoon in order to take in The Illuminations.

Meeting outside Starr Gate tram stop ready for a 2pm departure, we’ll walk to Red Bank Road (5.5 miles), with an expected arrival time of 4.00-4.15pm. We will then walk back to Starr Gate, soon stopping for some food (possibly fish and chips!) ... by the time we've finished eating, the Illuminations will have been switched on and we shall continue our walk back through 'the lights' to Starr Gate.

People can either do the full 11-mile return walk, just the outward walk from Starr Gate to Red Bank road (5.5 miles, catching either the tram or bus back), or just the return walk from Red Bank Road to Starr Gate (5.5 miles, with a break for food); if you choose the last option, please ensure that you are at Red Bank Road by 4pm ready to meet us.

Wansfell Pike and TroutbeckA fantastic circular walk starting in Ambleside ascending Wansfell Pike and then on to Troutbeck. From Troutbeck we return to Ambleside via Robins Lane. As this is a hill walk please wear the appropriate walking boots. There is likely to be mud in places.

In the event of bad weather a lower level alternative will be provided. Sorry, no dogs.

Brindle, Withnell Fold and the Lost Farms of Brinscall MoorA 10-mile moderate walk taking in several historical locations. We start in the village of Brindle, further down Water Street from its church which dates back to the 12th century: we will meet in the Brindle Community Hall car park ready to depart at 10.30am. We then walk to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, crossing the bridge over to the disused paper mill and 19th century 'model village' of Withnell Fold. Next, we progress through fields and the Oak Royal Golf Club to the village of Withnell where we shall stop for lunch.

Renourished, we then head up onto Brinscall Fell where we can explore the remains of several of the 50 farms that were ‘cleared’ by Liverpool Corporation Waterworks Department over the first part of the 20th century, notably ‘Botany Bay’ and ‘Ratten Clough’ (the latter being the best-preserved, having been vacated only in 1960). Heading down through Wheelton Plantation, we then rise up to ‘Windy Harbour’ and then down into Higher Wheelton and then back down to cross the Leeds-Liverpool Canal before returning to complete our walk in Brindle.
