Happy !

This guest comment seemed appropriate for today. We love a good brew in our household and anyone who’s met Mike knows he insists on tea made the proper way in a teapot. As a result, there are two teapots at the cottage, because you can never take the risk.

Back to our family Cornwall favourites, and this time it’s my (Laura) turn.

Me
40-something who finds it difficult to sit still and do nothing and refuses to go anywhere where a hot caffeinated beverage isn’t available.

Favourite beach
Consistent theme here – Widemouth. It’s our local beach and we have so many special family memories here – New Year’s Day breakfasts at the café, summer BBQs, searching for shells and finding marine life in the rock pools, family bodyboarding, sunset swims, too many sandcastles to count. Also, as the member of the family always drumming up enthusiasm to go for a stroll, I also love the beach walk from Crooklets to Sandymouth.

Favourite place to eat
for meals and cakes. We like to park at Boscastle harbour and do the cliff top walk to get there, which is a bit of a scramble in places but amazing scenery. Also, the does a great breakfast – and my favourite coffee in the area.

Favourite activity
I’m a fan of SUPing especially in the calm, shallow waters at Daymer Bay. We’ve also done a great paddle from Cotehele Quay( )down the River Tamar to Calstock.

Favourite place
I’m going to give Polzeath a special mention here. On the drive down to Polzeath beach the girls always say, “It feels like Portugal”, and it does have a slightly different beach vibe to some of the more rugged Cornish beaches we often go to. However, I do also love a rugged beach and Trebarwith Strand is such a great, dramatic spot for watching crashing waves. We like to clamber over the rocks to get a good view of the sunset – but it’s also watchable from the with a drink in hand.

Anything else?
The sunsets at Widemouth are pretty spectacular. So, on a clear evening, I highly recommend heading down to the beach after dinner for an evening stroll / play on the beach / sunset swim. I’d advocate for taking a flask of tea. Obviously.

Over to Poppy for her Cornwall favourites.

Age 11, Poppy is our family Moana - the sea calls her! She’s always the first to suggest bodyboarding and will always convince us to get into the water with her infectious enthusiasm… whatever the weather.

Favourite beach
Widemouth Bay especially when we go for a Widdy breakfast at the cafe first. I also really like Daymer Bay.

Favourite food
Obviously breakfast at the Widemouth cafe but my absolute favourite restaurant is .bude. I also like a pasty from .

Favourite activity
Definitely bodyboarding. But I also like playing tennis and pool at the cottage.

Anything else?
The windows in the cottage are my favourite place to read. I recommend taking a book, grabbing one of the blankets and making it into a window seat.

With a decisive 100% vote on the last post, Poppy and Milly are first up to share their Cornwall favourites.

And it’s over to Milly first - age 9 and a little bit obsessed with dinosaurs and penguins.

Favourite beach
🪨 🦖 Widemouth Bay or Duckpool. At Duckpool I found a rock with scratches on it - I think it might have been from dinosaurs. I also like making rock towers there.

Favourite food
🍔 I love burgers. Barney’s Burgers is my favourite (Barney’s Burgers is now called but Milly prefers the old name and is a bit stubborn about this)

Favourite activity
🦀 I really like crabbing down at the secret pool*. I also like playing pool and table tennis at the cottage and flying my kite and making sandcastles. I also really liked the .

* The secret pool is Tommy’s Pit seapool near Barrel Rock at Summerleaze beach in Bude.

Favourite flavour of ice cream
🍦 Everywhere else I like vanilla best but when I’m in Cornwall bubblegum.

Favourite shop
🧸 I love .

Anything else?
🐚 I love collecting shells on the beach and I keep the best ones in the plant pot at the front of the cottage. You can put some in as well.

A seemingly endless expanse of sand, the gentle roar of rolling waves, dramatic rock formations and the remains of a shipwreck - if you want to experience the rugged charm of the Cornish Coast, we strongly recommend a little hike across the sand from Crooklets Beach in Bude to Sandymouth Bay.

Note: We can’t guarantee you won’t get your feet wet
The beaches at Northcott and Sandymouth more or less disappear at high tide. So, check the tide times before you start and be prepared to divert to the coast path if the tide changes.

See a blog post on the website for more info on this walk.

We have a tendency to focus on the beaches in our posts. Understandably, this is Cornwall. But we are also very fond of a wander around the town of Bude.

Yes, there are some of the bigger brands we have come to expect EVERYWHERE – yes, you can get a Costa – but it’s the independent shops that we tend to go back to again and again.

Here are a selection of our favourites – some genuine one-offs and others that are part of independent Cornish chains. This doesn’t include cafes and restaurants – there are plenty to choose from so we’ll save the eateries for another post.

- For groceries and general supplies, including local produce.
- For bread and cakes.
- For a fab selection of books and gifts (the biggest selection of I’ve ever seen)
- Our go-to fudge shop
- The Biscoff ice cream is a favourite
– Art, handmade and locally produced gifts
- Clothes with a stylish surfer vibe ocean - sustainable clothing and repairs
- Locally designed and produced gifts
– For wetsuits, surfing and bodyboarding equipment and lots of advice about water-based activities

It’s bluebell season and the time of year when the woodland at the farm is at peak prettiness. We first viewed Cottons Cottage at this time of year back in 2010 and the woodland walk was definitely part of the magic that captured our hearts.

If you are in search of a countryside/coastal break this bank holiday weekend we have opened our calendar for a one-off short break.

Friday 3rd May - Monday 6th May - 3 nights for up to 4 people for £450.

A weekend reset.

After spending last weekend at the coast with my two bestest friends, I can confirm a weekend by the sea is most definitely good for the soul.

It means I’ve entered Monday with a spring in my step and a clear head, ready for whatever this week has to throw at me. That’s the wonderful effect of beach walks, sea air and a whole lot of giggles. I highly recommend.

As a result, we’ve decided although we don’t usually offer short breaks at Cottons Cottage at this time of year that we will make an exception for this weekend coming.

Friday 3rd May - Monday 6th May is now available to book. So why not grab a couple of friends or bundle your brood up for a trip to the Cornish coast this bank holiday weekend?

When did we buy Cottons Cottage? Here’s the story. The short version (excluding the long and torturous months of negotiating the mortgage).

Mike and I talked about buying a bolthole in Cornwall for years. Usually during our many camping trips to Crackington Haven throughout our twenties. But in Spring 2010, the time felt right to make those dreams more of a reality.

I (Laura) had not long turned 30 and seemed to be on a mission to do everything – from running a half marathon and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to learning to street dance and giving up a corporate career in favour of becoming a freelance writer.

Mike had been freelance TV camera operator for years, so we came up with a hare-brained scheme to buy a holiday cottage to rent out as a substitute for our non-existent company pensions.

Then, on one day in May 2010, we found ourselves slightly hungover and taking a scenic detour to Cornwall on our way back home from a friend’s 30th birthday party in London. We lived in Birmingham at the time.

We impulsively booked a viewing to see a pretty looking cottage we’d spotted on RightMove. It was Cottons Cottage – a quaint stone barn on Woolstone Manor Farm.

It was love at first sight. The search for our Cornish bolthole was over after a single viewing.

Swipe to see a few before photos from when we got the keys in September 2010.

Tommy’s Pit tidal pool.

This lesser-known sea pool is on the western side of Summerleaze Beach in Bude near to Barrel Rock (look for the pole with a barrel on it🛢️). It’s a real hidden gem and a beautiful and tranquil spot for wild swimming. It’s swimmable for a couple of hours either side of low tide.
