Before and after
Our clients lovely cottage, had what we refer to as skip infill to one gable, broken bricks had been crudely cemented in before being covered with weatherboard. As a direct result of inappropriate, poorly executed work, the room was cold, drafty and damp.

As part of a much bigger programme of repair of the timber frame. We were asked to replace some badly decayed, broad Elm boarding. However, it was hiding an ugly secret, the wall beneath consisted of what we term, skip fill. A timber framed outer wall of the outshot where the wattle and daub had been replaced with the cheapest and most convenient of brick. However, it was crumbling and loose. it was necessary to repair or replace almost every timber in this elevation and so the brick had to come out. although, to be honest, it fell out. After completing the structural timber repairs, we acquired some reclaimed bricks of the same size, colour and texture and set them in non hydraulic lime mortar. our clients liked the finished work so much they asked us to leave off the elm boarding.

The practise of traditional Wattle and Daub, is my speciality discipline and I love it!
It is infinitely repairable and re workable, I have yet to meet a panel that I wasn't able to save. I routinely, resurface and rework old daub panels, the oldest panels I have worked on were over six hundred years old and with a little Daub knowhow, were as good as the day they were first installed.
Or, if necessary, I hand coppice Hazel Wattles and hand weave around Chestnut Staves (upright timbers) which I make with an axe, to form a new panel base, onto which I apply the Daub, (essentially just earth.)
What could be more environmentally friendly.? Daub is also breathable, marvellously thermally efficient and helps with noise reduction.
The clients for whom I recently completed this work, opted to not lime wash the panels afterwards, as they fell in love with the gorgeous, golden glow of the dried Daub.
