Founded by a group of fixers that worked for journalists in the Afghan/Pakistan border area Untamed Borders uses specialist local guides to allow access to some of Asia's harder to reach places. In the past few years we have taken our guests skiing in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, arranged meetings with retired headhunters in Nagaland on the Indian/Mynamar border and stayed with descendants of both Alexander the Great and Genghis Khans armies in Central Asia.

Only 4 months to go until we head back to South Sudan on a group trip to meet some of the fascinating tribal communities in the world’s youngest nation.

On a 7-day road trip we will learn about the cultures of the Toposa tribe, the Larim and the Mundari people, all who have unique customs, rituals and celebrations.

From elaborate piercings and body scarification rituals with the Toposa, to the deep respect for cattle which the Mundari practice and to the skilled craftspeople of the Larim – the trip offers an insight into rarely visited communities.

On our adventure visiting the tribes, we traverse the area’s bush and also briefly take in part of the Boya Mountains, along with visiting the capital city – Juba.

To join our group in March 2025, please book via the link below or email – [email protected] – for further details:

We’ve been running ski trips to Iraq since 2017 and we’re delighted to be returning again in February 2025.

The 9-day trip visits Iraqi Kurdistan, in the north of the country, and we have the opportunity to ski the slopes of Iraq’s tallest mountain - Halgurd.

The region offers adventurous backcountry skiing and also well laid out slopes at the Korek Mountain Resort – we aim to take in both on the trip. We also immerse ourself into the Kurdish skiing community, taking part in the Iraq Ski Rally, which Untamed Borders organises.

This cultural exchange is one of the highlights of the trip, where guests can compete alongside Kurdish skiers in the mixed-ability competition.

We also visit the regional capital Erbil on the tour and drive the famous Hamilton Road, with its dramatic canyons and beautiful mountains.

We’ve now released a second set of dates in 2025 on our Afghanistan Central Route.

These photos are from last month’s 2,000km road trip where we cover a vast swathe of the central and southern part of the nation.

You can now book to join us in April/May and September/October 2025. We begin in Kabul, then move into the beautiful mountainous Bamian Province, visiting the Band e Amir National Park & the remains of its Buddhist cave complex.

We continue west, travelling through the remote Ghor Province, where we stay at the Minaret of Jam in its dramatic mountain ringed setting. Next, we move on to the ancient city of Herat, which contains the most extensive collection of historic buildings, including its UNESCO listed Citadel.

This is when we begin our loop down south, heading to the rarely visited Pashtun heartlands, which were extremely hard to visit in recent history, but easier now.

We explore Lashkar Ghar, Kandahar and Ghazni, before continuing our loop north, to finish back in Kabul.

You can book now via the link below or email – [email protected] – for further details:

Photos from our inaugural group trip to the World Nomad Games in Kazakhstan, followed by a Silk Road adventure.

We will be organising a trip to the 2026 World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan, after the success of the 2024 event in Astana.

The Games celebrate celebrated sports and games played by nomadic communities, and after we took a group this year to watch the action, we moved on from Kazakhstan to visit Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, on a journey along the Silk Road (photos in this post).

In 2026 we will enjoy the sporting action and then explore the phenomenal mountain scenery of Kyrgyzstan and the nation’s treasure trove of Silk Road relics.

Photos from our PR & Marketing Coordinator, David Harrison, who in recent weeks has been exploring the Gilgit-Baltistan region, in the beautiful north of Pakistan.

We visit many of the areas in these pictures on our Hindu Kush and Karakoram group trip in May, plus we visit much more on the 15-day adventure.

On a road-trip David journeyed along the famous Karakoram Highway, taking in the likes of Hunza, Passu, Attadbad Lake, Gilgit, Khunjerab, by the Chinese border, along with the Skardu Valley (all which we visit on our group trips).

David also explored the Sarfaranga Cold Desert and around the stunning Fairy Meadows. Plus he hiked to Nanga Parbat (9th highest mountain on earth) Base Camp - these sections aren’t on our group trips.

On our group adventure in May, we will spend more time in the Hindu Kush, travelling across the Shandur Pass to Chitral and the remote Kalasha Valleys, to meet the pagan communities who call the area home. We also visit the bustling city of Peshawar.

Our next Algeria group trip in February is fully booked, however, due to popular demand we’ve just released a new set of dates in November (details below).

Meanwhile, we recently took a guest on an 8-day private trip to, which started off in the capital Algiers.

We visited the city’s labyrinth-like Kasbah, its mosques and waterfront, before moving along the coast to the impressive Roman ruins at Tipaza and Cherchell.

Next on the tour was a flight to the western coastal city of Oran, which we had time to explore, before we took a day trip to Tlemcen, with its walled fortress, palace, Moorish buildings and tomb of Sidi Boumedien (this is a section we don’t visit on the group trip).

We then visited the dramatic ravine town of Constantine and the wonderful Roman remains in the mountainous setting of Djemila. The trip finished with more time back in the capital.

On our group trips we take in some of the sites above and also head deep into the country’s Saharan interior.

A film about skiing in Afghanistan, which Untamed Borders provided planning and logistics for, is scheduled to appear at four more film festivals in the US this month.

Champions of the Golden Valley follows the progress of Afghan skiers and the formation of the Bamyan Alpine Ski Club, which we visit on our annual group ski trips.

The film was premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York in the summer and will soon appear at Austin Film Festival, Hot Springs Film Festival, Heartland Film Festival and Newport Beach Film Festival.

You can ski in the terrain featured in the film and help support the new ski club by joining us on our group ski trip in February.

It’s a unique skiing experience, where we enjoy adventurous backcountry skiing, meet the Afghan ski community, some who still use homemade wooden skis, plus we take part in the Afghan Peaks Ski Race.

In the next 6 months we have two group trips planned to the rarely visited Djibouti and Somaliland, in the Horn of Africa.

The departures in November this year and February 2025 begin in Djibouti City (it’s capital), then we spend time among the otherworldly landscapes at Lac Abbe – a salt lake famed for its unusual rock formations and limestone chimneys. We set up camp around this remarkable scenery.

We then visit the lowest point in all of Africa, Lac Assal, which has the highest salinity of any lake in the world, which draws out vivid colours and we return for more time in Djibouti City.

Next, it’s time to head to Somaliland – starting with a long drive across the area’s remote desert, and on to visit the ancient rock art site at Dhagax Khoure, which offers beautiful views around the surrounding bush. It’s in this region we get to meet some of the seminomadic communities who call the area home.

We have 2 days in the city of Hargeisa, which is vibrant place with busy livestock markets and street traders, and move on to the Las Geel rock paintings, which are some of the most fascinating on the whole continent.

The final few days of the trip are spent along the coast at the city of Berbera and we enjoy a wonderful drive through the country’s mountains to the town of Sheik – returning to finish in Hargeisa.

Stunning photos from a 3 week trip we organised last month for 2 guests to Mongolia.

The extensive adventure took in the nation’s vast wild nature, visiting many lakes, its huge plains and we traversed various large mountain ranges.

We spent many days camping and staying in traditional yurts in small settlements along the route, meeting the communities who live in this remote part of the world.

We met camel and reindeer herders, horseback eagle hunters, traditional wrestlers and took part in local celebrations along the way.

Our guests also spent time hiking, horse riding and fishing – a beautiful trip, packed with action and endless beautiful scenery.

Our Founder James Willcox recently returned from a research trip to a number of fascinating areas of Afghanistan, which we don't visit on our group trips and he had not visited before.

It included Nuristan, in the far east of Afghanistan, along the border with Pakistan, and also to the Lapis Lazuli mines at Sar e Sang in Badakhshan - mines that have been working for 7000 years!

James also spent time in parts of Kunar's Korengal Valley and explored the remains of the Kabul Golf Club, which is one of the more unusual places to tee off on the planet. The trip and research is for a special project he's working on, which we'll reveal more about in the future.

For more information about our private trips across Afghanistan, please get in touch via email - [email protected]. We also have a number of upcoming group trips available to book - 9 day & 15 day cultural trips, along with our fantastic annual ski trip.

On our 7-day trips to Pakistan we delve into the rich history, culture and vibrant streets scenes in some of the country’s northern cities – with the next departures in November & January.

We begin in Lahore and spend 3 days exploring its beautiful shrines, mosques, ancient sites and bazaars, along with taking in the famous Attair-Wagah border ceremony.

Next up is a road trip to Peshawar, where we pay a visit to the UNESCO listed Rohtas Fort on the way, set amongst the area’s lush rolling hills.

We have a number of days exploring the vibrant city of Peshawar - wandering the rabbit warren of tight-knit streets, markets and eating some of the array of tasty food, in a place where the streets are bustling with life, smells and sounds.

It’s at this point we move on in the direction of the modern capital of Islamabad, with a stop off at the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Takt e Bhai and Taxilia, along the journey. We then complete the trip by touring the impressive modern buildings and monuments in Islamabad.

We recently guided a private guest on a 6-day trip around the East African nation of Eritrea.

These photos are from the tour, where we started in the capital Asmara – a city which carries many architectural marks of its Italian colonial past, with grand Art Deco buildings.

After taking in the sights of the capital we drove through the country’s mountains scenery to the second largest city – Keren – which has bustling livestock and handicraft markets.

The next stretch of road trip took us through 3 climatic zones on the drive to Massawa – starting off cool, then passing through to very hot by the time we reached the coast. It’s here we had chance to explore the Eritrean coastline and visited Massawa’s 1,000 year old mosque.

We also took a boat trip to Green Island, which is great for snorkelling and has impressive white sandy beaches, before heading back to Asmara.

If you would like to join us on a private trip to Eritrea or any of our other destinations, please don’t hesitate to get in touch by emailing – [email protected]

Photos from an 11-day private trip we recently organised for two guests into the wilds of Kyrgyzstan.

On the road and hiking trip we stayed in traditional yurts in remote locations in the country’s phenomenal mountainous scenery.

Among the highlights were stops at Issyk Kul Lake, the second largest mountain lake in the world, Red Shazka Canyon, Song Kul Lake, the Tien Shan Mountains, the Valley of Tash Rabat and Kel Suu Lake.

We also enjoyed a number of long hiking days through the country’s jaw-dropping landscapes and met local eagle hunters, encountered remote nomadic communities and herders.

They also had chance to explore the capital city of Bishkek, visited ancient mausoleums in the countryside and visited the Tash Rabat caravanserai – the highest altitude caravanserai in the world (at 3,200m).

Last month we organised a 5-day trip for 2 private guests to the isolationist state of Turkmenistan.

These phenomenal photos were taken on the short tour of the Central Asian nation, which contains vast expanses of desert and ancient relics of its Silk Road past.

It also now has many striking, ultra-modern, structures particularly in the capital Ashgabat, which makes for a country of real contrasts.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the ever-burning Darvaza Gas Crater, where we stayed in yurts in the desert and we also took in the UNESCO sites at Kunya-Urgench and the remains of the 12th century Silk Road city of Merv.

The country receives few tourists and is still incredibly guarded to the outside world, so these private trips offer a rare insight into a country, which few know much about or ever get to see.

New trip - Trek Kurdistan - Zagros Mountain Trail.

In April we're taking guests on an exciting new 15-day trekking trip, through the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq - along the newly formed, Zagros Mountain Trail.

The 215km route connects remote communities, using ancient pilgrimage routes and trading and shepherds’ paths, finishing at the foot of Iraq’s tallest mountain, Halgurd.

Along the way it passes through lush valleys, travels through canyons, past waterfalls, trails the Great Zab River and goes up and over steep mountain passes.

We’ll also visit ancient villages, in rural and remote Kurdistan, offering a fascinating insight into the rich tapestry of cultures in the region. The trail building project was designed to not only boost tourism in this beautiful part of the world, but also bring together those diverse communities.

A challenging and fresh new trek, which we are proud to be launching. We also start and finish the trip in the city of Erbil, which we will have chance to explore.

You can book now on this new adventure on our website or email – [email protected] – for further details.

Wonderful photos from a recent extensive private trip we organised for a guest around Afghanistan.

She visited many areas not found on our group trips such as Nuristan, crossing from Pakistan to Afghanistan through the Khyber Pass, Jalalabad and a non-trekking trip to the Wakhan corridor and Lake Shiwa.

She also visited Kabul and Herat, which are visited on our group trips.

We have a number of upcoming group trips to Afghanistan – 9 Day cultural trips in November and April and a 15 Day cultural trip in April/May. We’re also heading on a ski trip in February and have more trips planned for the year ahead.

Along with our upcoming new trek to Yemen, we also have a number of cultural trips in early 2025, which are available to book on our website – in January and April

On a 7-day road-trip we visit a large portion of the east of the country – taking in the vast Wadi Dawan and Wadi Hadramout, with their dramatic cliff faces, ancient villages, desert plateaus and unique communities in this remote corner of the world.

On the tour we cross part of the famous Empty Quarter, one of harshest areas on the planet climate wise, and also spend time on the coast, meeting Yemenis in the region’s fishing villages.

Along the way we visit the impressive mud-built town of Shibam, the historic Islamic teaching town of Tarim, see ancient tombs and soak up life in one of the most challenging environments on earth, among much much more.

6 months to go until our next ski trip to Afghanistan.

In February we’ll be taking guests on a 10-day tour, which begins in Kabul, before heading north to Bamian Province.

Before the skiing begins, we have time to visit the famous cave networks in Bamian, which used to be home to Buddhist monasteries and carvings.

It’s then in this part of the world where we enjoy a number of days of adventurous backcountry skiing, in the Koh e Baba Mountain range, carving out own routes and spending time with the Afghan skiing community. This is a unique skiing experience, where many Afghans still use wooden skis to take on the slopes.

We also coincide the trip with the annual Afghan Peaks Ski Race, where Afghan skiers and our international contingent, take part in a mixed ability race – a hugely important moment in the skiing calendar in Afghanistan. We’ll also team up with the Bamyan Alpine Ski Club, to help further their work in the region and take in the stunning scenery in this beautiful part of the country.

You can book now on our February 2025 ski trip – or email – [email protected] – for further details.

The mountainous scenery in Northern Pakistan is among some of the most striking anywhere on earth.

It contains peaks reaching up to more than 8,000 metres, glaciers, gushing blue rivers and lakes. Alongside this there are also ancient communities and rarely visited nomadic cultures, making it a fascinating place to visit.

We’re returning on a group trip in May/June 2025 – a 14-day adventure. We begin by visiting the capital Islamabad, then fly to the northern town of Skardu, where we join the phenomenal Karakoram Highway (one of the world’s most breathtaking). We leave Skardu carving on a long drive through the mountains to Hunza, visiting its ancient forts and communities.

We head further north to Passu and the icy waters of Attabad Lake, which is where we climb to our highest point – the Khunjerab Pass (where the Pakistan and China borders meet). Here we travel through the nearby national park to the biggest city in the region, Gilgit, with time to explore, before a 3-day drive to Chitral, over the Shandur Pass.

Next is 3 days in the Kalasha Valleys, which is home to the rarely visited Kalasha people, a tribe of Animists and Ancestor Worshippers. We immerse ourselves into the area’s community, taking part in traditional celebrations, a unique insight into a people who meet few outsiders.

We then finish the trip with time to explore the north-western, bustling city, of Peshawar.
