Founded by a group of fixers that worked for journalists in the Afghan/Pakistan border area Untamed Borders uses specialist local guides to allow access to some of Asia's harder to reach places. In the past few years we have taken our guests skiing in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, arranged meetings with retired headhunters in Nagaland on the Indian/Mynamar border and stayed with descendants of both Alexander the Great and Genghis Khans armies in Central Asia.

In January/February 2025 we’ll be taking guests to trek through the dramatic wadis of Yemen and explore ancient mud-built towns and villages on a 10-day adventure.

The pioneering new trip is focused on the Hadramout region of the country, traversing steep wadi canyons, crossing desert plateaus and visiting historic settlements.

Along the way we’ll meet the communities who live in this harsh and remote environment, many of whom receive few international adventures. On our way to the trek start point we also visit the city of Seiyun and the Manhattan of the Desert - "Shibam".

This brand new route is created by Untamed Borders, with help from our specialist local teams and our recce over last winter still lives long in the memory.

It’s a unique trekking adventure, which launches in January 2025. You can book now via the link below or get further details by emailing – [email protected]

Our first departure of 2025 on our Afghan Central route is now available to book on our website.

The 2,000km road trip in April/May begins in Kabul before crossing nearby the full width of the country to the historic Silk Road city of Herat, in the west.

Along the route between the two cities, we pass through the beautiful mountainous region of Bamian Province, visiting Band e Amir lakes and the famous Buddhist cave networks.

We move on through Ghor Province, taking in the Minaret of Jam, then after visiting Herat, we head south to the former Pashtun heartlands around Lashkar Ghar, Kandahar and Ghazni. This is a part of Afghanistan which receives few international visitors. We then loop back up to finish in the capital, Kabul.

We currently have a second trip available to book (which begins at the end of September this year), but bookings will close for this departure next week – so please be quick if you want to join us on that trip.

Tourism is on the rise in Iraqi Kurdistan and the Kurdish authorities are hoping to attract around 20 million people annually by 2030.

The area’s natural beauty is one of the main draws, particularly the country’s beautiful Zagros Mountains, and in February we will be taking a group to ski the region’s slopes – including parts of Iraq’s tallest mountain Halgurd.

On the 9-day trip we start off exploring the city of Erbil and head on a road trip along the dramatic Hamilton Road. We continue on to Choman, near the border with Iran, and enjoy 5-days of adventurous backcountry skiing.

Along with carving out new routes, we will also meet the Kurdish skiing community and take part in the Iraq Ski Rally – a mixed ability ski race, which we visit every year.

A fantastic insight into Kurdistan and a wonderful skiing adventure -to book please visit the link below or email – [email protected] – with further questions:

In March we will be offering guests a rare insight into tribal life in South Sudan.

On a 7-day adventure we will meet 3 different tribes – the Mundari, Toposa and Larim – all which have their own customs, rituals and traditions.

Along with spending time soaking up these unique cultures in remote villages, which few outsiders get to experience, we will also explore the landscapes of the world’s youngest nation and visit the capital, Juba.

The nation only recently opened up to tourism and receives very few international visitors, which makes it a truly special opportunity to meet the tribes and learn about their ancient practices.

Great news - Pakistan has introduced free visas for 126 nationalities, in major changes to the nation’s application process.

Previously it cost around $60 and the system regularly encountered delays and tourists faced unpredictable waiting times.

This should now change, with the Pakistani authorities also promising to deal and respond to applications within 24 hours.

You can read more about the latest developments on our website - https://untamedborders.com/pakistan-introduces-free-visas-for-126-countries/

We have a number of upcoming trips to the country including 13-day, 10-day and 7-day cultural tours along the Indus Valley, an adventure to take part in the 2025 Islamabad Marathon, a trip to take in the rarely visited western region of Balochistan and annual visits to the gorgeous Hindu Kush & Karakorum Mountains.

Our Founder, James Willcox, recently wrote an extensive piece for the Royal Society for Asian Affairs, about the growing skiing community in Afghanistan.

In the piece for the organisation’s magazine - Caravanserais - James charts the history of skiing in the country up to the current day.

Untamed Borders were the first company to run ski trips to the country back in 2011 and we have continued returning with group and private trips ever since, including earlier this year & we’ll be returning in 2025.

Our next group ski trip to the nation is in February – you can book now via the link below:

We have two spaces available on our November group trip to Afghanistan, which includes taking in a game of the fascinating horse-back game of buzkashi.

You can read more about the physical and high-paced sport in this recent Al Jazeera article, it’s quite a spectacle and is popular across Central Asia:

https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2024/3/18/the-pain-and-gain-behind-the-afghan-game-of-buzkashi

We start the 9-day tour in Pakistan, with chance to visit the city of Peshawar, before we fly to the Afghan capital Kabul. We have time to take in many of Kabul’s most famous sites, including Sakhi Shrine and the city’s bazaars.

We then head on a long road trip north to Mazar e Sharif, which carves through beautiful mountainous scenery, with stops at Buddhist stupas along the way and a stretch through the Tashkurgan Gorge.

Mazar e Sharif is home to one of the country’s most important religious sites, the Shrine of Hazrat Ali, which we have chance to explore. It’s also in the north where we plan to watch a game buzkashi and visit the ancient Silk Road city of Balkh.

We return to Kabul after our northern leg, before flying to the stunning city of Herat, in the far east of the nation, which contains the largest number of ancient buildings in Afghanistan. After a thorough tour of Herat, we then finish the trip back in the capital.

We’ve just released new dates for a 7-day group trip to Pakistan in January/February.

On the adventure we begin in the stunning city of Lahore, which is jam-packed with ancient history, beautiful shrines and mosques. The city oozes vibrancy and it’s a wonderful introduction to Pakistani culture.

We then head west to the city pf Peshawar, with a stop at the UNESCO listed Rohtas Fort en route. Peshawar is at a cross-roads of cultures, at the gateway to the subcontinent and Central Asia.
The mix of cultures and communities in the city is fascinating, with tightly packed bazaars and lots of tasty food.

After 2 nights in the city we head in the direction of Islamabad. On the way we stop at two more UNESCO World Heritage sites, Takht e Bhai and Taxila, both which date back to the Ghandarian period. The trip finishes with a city tour of the modern capital.

The Yemeni island of Socotra has one of the most unique natural habitants on the planet.

The remarkable biodiversity includes species of plants, which aren’t found anywhere on earth, a diverse range of stunning landscapes, protected marine reserves, coral reefs and rare wild and birdlife.
It also contains vast white sandy beaches, deep canyons, forests, cave networks, wild swimming lagoons, cliff faces, deserts and enormous sand dunes.

On our 8-day group trips to Socotra we explore all of these beautiful natural wonders, while also experiencing local life in this remote location, which few tourists get to see.

We have two trips schedule to return to the Yemeni island – one in November/December this year and another in April 2025. Prepare to be amazed.

You can book either trip now via the link below or contact – [email protected] – with any specific queries.

Our next group trip to Iraq is fast approaching.

We still have a small number of spaces left on our 9-day Cradle of Civilisation adventure in October, but if that’s too close, we also have trips planned along this route in December this year and in 2025.

On the tour we delve into the country’s fascinating ancient history, exploring areas where some of the world’s earliest civilisations lived, including the ancient Sumerians and Babylonians. The trip is shaped by the country’s two great rivers, the Euphrates and the Tigris, and we take in a vast swathe of central and southern Iraq on the journey.

We explore the capital Baghdad, before heading to the wonderful 8th century great mosque and spiral minaret at Samarra. Next up is a visit to the remains of the ancient city of Babylon and we experience two of Shia Islam’s holiest sites at Karbala & Najaf.

We move on to the ancient sites of Uruk and Ur, before travelling south to the country’s southern marshlands and explore the area by boat, spotting some of Saddam’s former palaces along the way. The trip finishes on the Gulf Coast in the city of Basra.

We now have 2 trips available to book to Djibouti and Somaliland on our website.

Our upcoming Horn of Africa group trips begin in November 2024 and February 2025 and over 9-days we enjoy the highlights from both destinations.

We begin in Djibouti City, then head to the otherworldly landscapes at Lac Abbe – a salt lake famed for its unusual rock formations and limestone chimneys, which was used as a backdrop for the Planet of the Apes films.

We then visit the lowest point in all of Africa, Lac Assal, which has the highest salinity of any lake in the world and it's followed by more time exploring Djibouti City.

Now it’s time to head to Somaliland – starting with a long drive across the area’s remote desert, and on to visit the ancient rock art site at Dhagax Khoure, which offers beautiful views around the surrounding bush. It’s in this region we get to meet some of the seminomadic communities who call the area home.

Next we have 2 days in the city of Hargeisa, which is vibrant place with busy livestock markets and street traders and move on to the Las Geel rock paintings, which are some of the most fascinating on the whole continent.

The final few days of the trip are spent along the coast at the city of Berbera and we enjoy a wonderful drive through the country’s mountains to the town of Sheik – returning to finish in Hareisa.

At Untamed Borders sport is dear to our hearts and we’re always looking to offer not only fantastic cultural experiences, but we also like to organise certain trips which offer guests a challenge.

Along with our various skiing and trekking trips over the next 12 months, we also have 2 opportunities for travellers to take part in marathons in adventurous destinations.

The first up is the Erbil Marathon in October – we take part in the showcase running event in Iraqi Kurdistan, which draws tens of thousands of runners, and have plenty of time to explore this beautiful region.

On the 5-day trip we also spend a day training in the Zagros Mountains, with a group of Iraqi runners, and visit the spiritual home of the Yazidi people in Lalish, experiencing their ancient culture and traditions.

We also drive the famous Hamilton Road, which carves through gorges, past waterfalls, through Kurdistan’s dramatic mountainous scenery and we have chance to go on a city tour, which includes visiting the city’s ancient Citadel (one of the oldest continually inhabited places on earth).

Book now via the link below or email – [email protected] - for further details:

We also have a second marathon trip in January 2025, to take part in the Islamabad Marathon in Pakistan. Details below.

We have new dates now available to book on our Yemen mainland route, in January and April 2025.

Our final trip of 2024 to visit the country’s dramatic wadis, deserts and coastline, is now nearly fully booked, but there is a space available.

Among the highlights is the opportunity to explore the breathtaking Wadi Dawan, with its date palm lined wadi floors and steep cliff faces, which lead to a desert plateau. Among the stunning scenery you encounter ancient, mud built, villages and meet the remote communities who live there.

We also visit Shibman, which is known as the “Manhattan of the Desert” due the imposing, skyscraper style buildings, made out of mud. We spend time crossing the harsh desert of the Empty Quarter too, spotting camel trains on the route, and meet the fishing communities along the country’s coast.

The area we visit is in the east of the country, far away from the flash-points around the Houthi controlled Sana’a. A truly beautiful region, which sees few outsiders, but this adventure gives you an insight into these remote communities and landscapes.

To join us in November 2024, January or April 2025, please book via the link below or email – [email protected] – for further details.

We’re excited to be taking guests back to the region of Balochistan, in Pakistan’s south/central west, on a group trip in November this year.

The area is the least visited in the country by international tourists and it has been challenging to go in recent history due to security considerations, but it is now more possible.

The 10-day trip kicks off with a 4-day journey along the beautiful Makran Coastal Highway, which travels through dramatic mountains, past remote beaches and runs along steep cliffs. The Hingol National Park is also in this part of the world, known for its mud volcanoes.

We then change course and travel north, through the region’s interior, which is filled with areas of desert and arid mountains, home to other worldly rock formations and large caves. We continue on, up to the city of Quetta, to experience Baloch urban life, with its bustling bazaars and vibrant street scenes.

It’s at this point we take a train journey across the Bolan Pass, dropping 1,000m in altitude over the course of the route & then visit the Ziarat Juniper Forest, which contains the Quaid-e-Azam Residency, where the Founder of Pakistan, Muhammed Ali Jinnah, spent his final days.

You can find out more about the trip and book by visiting the link below or email – [email protected] – for further details.

Our annual ski trip to Afghanistan is one we particularly look forward to every year and we’ve been taking guests on backcountry skiing adventures since 2011.

We’ll be returning in February 2025, with 10-days exploring the country and skiing in the Koh e Baba Mountain range, part of the Hindu Kush mountains.

These wonderful photos were taken on this year's adventure along the route by one of our guests. The trip starts in the capital Kabul, with time to take in some of the city’s sites, before driving through the mountains to Bamian, where we visit the area’s many caves and Buddhist sites.

We then have 4 days enjoying the largely unexplored skiing terrain around Bamian, with the opportunity to carve out our own routes through this stunning area. We’ll also meet the local skiing community and team up with the Bamyan Alpine Ski Club – which supports Afghans involved in skiing.

We coincide our trip with the Afghan Peaks Ski Race, a mixed-ability race, which we’ll have chance to take part in – a wonderful cultural exchange with the Afghan skiers, including many children who use wooden skis.

We then return to Kabul with the chance to explore more of the city before the trip finishes.

You can join us in February 2025 by booking via the link below or email – [email protected] – for further details:

Only 6 months to go until we head on our inaugural group trekking trip to Yemen.

On this pioneering new route we will weave in and out of the date palm lined wadis in the Hadramout area of the country. The region, in the east of the nation, is famed for its dramatic cliff faces and deep wadi canyon.

The route will pass through some of the area’s ancient mud-built settlements, climb up the rocky cliff passes, up to the desert plateau – offering stunning vistas down to the wadi below.

The route was checked by one of Untamed Borders’ international trekking guides, alongside our Yemeni team, and we are very excited to be able to offer this experience to you early next year.

To join us in January on this trailblazing new adventure, please book via the link below, or if you have any questions about the trip, email – [email protected]

We have one more adventure this year on our 2000km Afghan Central route road trip, which begins in Kabul, before travelling almost the full width of the country to Herat, in the west.

On the way between these two great cities, we visit the beautiful mountainous landscapes and lakes in Bamian Province, cross the remote Ghor Province and visit the astounding Minaret of Jam.

We then loop south to the former Pashtun Heartlands around Lashkar Ghar, Kandahar and Ghazni – areas which have been rarely been visited by foreign visitors over recent years, due to conflict in the nation. We then finish the 15-day trip in Kabul.

These photos were taken on our spring trip to the area and we look forward to returning along this fascinating route in September/October.

There are a limited number of spaces left on the upcoming Afghan Central route adventure, but we hope to have our 2025 dates released in the near future. You can book on this year’s trip now via the link below or email – [email protected] – for further details and to register an interest for 2025.

In February we are returning to the slopes of Iraqi Kurdistan on a 9-day ski trip.

After flying into the city of Erbil, we will drive the famous Hamilton Road, with its varied and dramatic scenery, to the Korek Mountain Resort.

We continue on to Choman, near the northern border with Iran, in the shadow of Iraq’s tallest mountain Halgurd and spend 5-days on an adventurous backcountry skiing adventure in the region.

We will seek out routes which have rarely been skied before and aim to chart our own path, finding virgin runs in this stunning setting. We also coincide the trip with the annual Iraq Ski Rally - a mixed-ability ski race, which brings together the Iraqi Kurdistan ski community and international visitors.

This is a wonderful cultural exchange over a shared love of the sport and we are delighted to help organise it again. We will also enjoy the Iraqi hospitality in the region, staying at homestay in the high mountains, before returning to Erbil to finish the trip.

New 2025 dates for Iraq now live on our website and available to book and we have trips left to come this year (in October and December).

On our 9-day Cradle of Civilisation group tour, we take in a large section of central and southern Iraq, in an area bound by the two great rivers, the Euphrates and the Tigris.

It’s a region which was home to some of the world’s earliest civilisations, including the ancient Sumerians and Babylonians. It’s also played a significant role in recent history and is a country finding its feet again after years of conflict.

We start by exploring the capital Baghdad, before heading on a day trip to visit the astonishing 8th century great mosque and spiral minaret at Samarra.

We then visit the remains of the ancient city of Babylon and experience two of Shia Islam’s holiest sites at Karbala & Najaf, a fascinating experience.

We will soon have to send off documentation for the 7-day adventure, however, there are a small number of spaces available to snap up. So if you would like to join us in October, please get in touch now.

These photos were taken by our guide recently, at some of the fascinating ancient sites you take in on the trip, including the magnificent Roman remains at Leptis Magna & Sabratha - among the most impressive on earth.

We also spend time exploring the capital Tripoli, the traverse the Jebel Nafusa hills, before heading inland, towards the Sahara. It’s here where we’ll stop at the UNESCO listed oasis town of Ghadames, which has a rich history as a cross-roads of culture in the region.

In the area you spend time learning about Berber culture, before finishing the trip back in Tripoli.

If you would like to join us please get in touch by emailing – [email protected] – or you can book now via the link below.

You can also register an interest for our 2025 trip the region and dates will be revealed soon.

Our Story

Since first operating pioneering tours to Afghanistan in 2007, Untamed Borders have continued to offer bespoke trips and small group adventures to some of the world’s most interesting and inaccessible places. Specialising in trips across Central Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, former Soviet Central Asia and the Caucasus, Untamed Borders now take guests to over 40 different countries still largely untouched by tourism.

Operating in destinations that generally see very few visitors, Untamed Borders has a responsibility to work closely with the people and communities who call them home. Knowing the communities personally we can ensure that our guests have an authentic experience of the places, people and cultures they meet. We know that when you visit a Yazidi shrine, dance at a Kalasha wedding or spend time with Afghan shepherds, you will be getting a 100% genuine experience.
