Menopause Unmuted
If there was any one thing that affected so many people in such a significant way we’d think of it on epidemic levels.
So why isn’t there more interest and action around menopause and supporting people at that stage of their life in both their personal lives and their careers?
Listen to the latest episode of the podcast to hear from Karina Todd on what we can and should be doing.
I’ll link both Spotify and Apple Podcasts in the comments and would appreciate if you would like and share to help get this important conversation heard folks 🙏

Do we need to rethink how we compensate employees in order to achieve true employee engagement?
—
I’m stoked to share with you the brand new episode of the Vibrant Workplace Podcast, supported by nijobfinder, with special guest - founder of income inequality solutions start-up ‘VOSA’, Dimi Yar, as we discuss what it really takes to engage a team.
When we talk about employee engagement I often feel we're unrealistic based on current business models.
It feels to me like we're asking for employees to care like owners. But they're not owners. If the business does well, they get a company branded cupcake and the joy of appearing in a staged photoshoot for social media.
And in many industries they're going to work more than anything else they'll do in their lives for little more than mental / physical health problems and to toil in financial strife in return.
As we've seen in recent times, the moment the winds change even the largest enterprise will lay off thousands without warning.
So what's in it for the employees that WILL encourage them to engage and perform?
As many (but not all) businesses are currently run, why would they care?
And what can we do to deliver a model which results in BETTER business performance while ALSO working for the employees?
In a world where employers are struggling with talent attraction, attendance, performance and retention problems - and employees are struggling to pay the bills - how can we find a true WIN:WIN that's better for both?
Check out the snippet below from our conversation and I'll link the full episode in the comments!

There are fundamental pillars to engaging a team, and if we don’t get these right in the first place then we’ll find it much more difficult to get people coming to work driven to making a difference with the work they do.

Work Sucks% Vibrant Intro
Work Sucks! But, it doesn't have to. Work can be great and can do so much for people. The world of work can be better, for both employers and for employees.
Do you agree? You should read this week's blog - https://buff.ly/3qUKwAW
“When someone gets to that front door I expect them to leave their feelings and personal problems outside and get on with their work.”
That was a policy of a manager in a company where I used to work. That policy says to me, I don’t care about you, your life, or your well-being. I care about results. I care about what you can do for me. That’s what you’re paid for, that’s what you’re here to deliver. End of story.
Is that okay? 🧐
Does a manager have to care personally about members of their team?

Do we ever go too far with employee engagement initiatives?
Do we ever go too far with our efforts to shape great workplace experiences for our people? 🧐
Is it possible that our intentions to create a great work environment can lead to funhouses where we attract people for the wrong reasons to come and work for us and detract from what we’re trying to achieve?
Where is the balance to be found between ping pong, pet friendly work environments and rolling up our sleeves to graft? ⚖️
How do we know if and when we’ve found that balance?
I would love to hear your views!

Happy Monday everyone!
My week’s started off really positively as I just had my vaccine which I was surprised to get my letter for at the end of last week 🥳
A lot of credit needs to go to our health service and all involved for rolling out these vaccines so quickly, certainly in Northern Ireland and the UK 👏 👏
Hopefully soon our conversation can move from coping and surviving to how we bounce back from the challenges of the past year.
Unity and team is going to be at the heart of that and while this period has actually strengthened the bond and trust between employer/ employee in some organisations, it’s damaged it for many too. But, what’s done is done and what we should focus on now is what lessons we can learn and what we can do to rebuild going forward.
We have not one but TWO of our Vibrant Leaders programme kicking off in March due to high demand! Defining, building and enabling engaged and high performing teams will be a the heart of those programmes. So if you’re a people manager, aspire to be one or are responsible for the development of any please get in touch and I can share information.
We can take just 3 more participants and will be closing bookings Wednesday!
Have a great Monday! 🙌

Use Mooqi - For a Better Working World
We promised a big reveal, & here it is! Meet Mooqi - our new Employee Experience platform built to help us toward our vision of a better working world for both employer & employee! 🌍🙏
People commit 1/3 of their lives to their work. It’s what we do more than almost anything! But how much of our lives do we spend ticking by without any real connection to the work we’re doing or our company?
Organisations with low levels of engagement bleed resources through presenteeism, absenteeism, low performance & high staff turnover. It makes it very difficult to achieve anything.
Nowadays we take employee engagement more seriously, but we’re still often focused on the wrong things. Beanbags, pool tables, office yoga & bring a pet to work day. These are all nice, but they’re not what engage teams.
What does? The only people who can tell us are our own people & it can be different in every company. The best thing we can do is give them a voice, listen, understand their experience of work & work with them to shape a culture where they want to be, can do their best work & are happy.
We built Mooqi to facilitate that, while simplifying & speeding up the process of giving feedback for employees & giving employers more balanced, relevant & easily interpretable insights.
Check it out!
