Folks we have 18 people on Online Vibrant Leaders programmes at the moment and the feedback is horrendous 😱

“Shocking programme, don’t know why anyone would go on it.”

“Complete waste of time.”

And:

“I’d rather be watching Manchester United” 😵‍💫
.about sums it up.

That said, it was a programme launched in response to the lockdowns of the pandemic to help our clients continue to develop leaders across their businesses via a remote delivery format and it’s been requested continuously ever since.

So maybe some parts of it are ok? 🤷‍♂️

We’ve been asked to schedule another one now.

One of the biggest advantages is we have people from all over the world on these programmes coming together to collaborate, share and learn from each other as much as the God awful programme itself.

On today’s Vibrant Leaders course, we had a lively discussion about Lewin’s Leadership Styles.

We debated whether Autocratic leadership (where decisions rest solely with the boss) could ever borrow from Democratic leadership, which thrives on team input but can sometimes lead to decision paralysis.

So, just for a bit of fun (because let’s be honest, we don’t need another leadership model!), we landed on a new hybrid concept:

✨DemAutocratic

👉The wisdom of democracy.
👉The speed of autocracy.

It’s about being authoritative when necessary - but never at the expense of collective wisdom.

In high-pressure situations, leaders need to blend decisiveness with inclusivity, making rapid decisions while leveraging the intelligence of their team.

This approach is particularly useful in:

✅ Crisis management – where speed is critical, but input leads to better outcomes.
✅ Fast-paced industries – where leaders must adapt quickly while keeping teams aligned.
✅ Transformational leadership – where big changes require both speed and buy-in.

When leading transformation - whether it’s restructuring, cultural change, or innovation - leaders must listen to diverse perspectives, adapt based on real feedback, and then move decisively to keep progress on track.

Even in a crisis, great leaders don’t operate in isolation.

They listen, learn, and then make the call.

So… DemAutocratic.

A fun thought experiment - but does it resonate with you? 😅

(Of course, great leaders already blend decisiveness and inclusivity in different ways - which is just good leadership! There’s obvious overlap between different models, but we had a bit of fun exploring the tension between speed and wisdom, and how leaders can balance both when the pressure is on.)

Recently I was told about a business with some incredible perks, including a 4 day week, but almost half the workforce is leaving each year… 🚪🏃‍♂️‍➡️🏃‍♀️‍➡️

With those perks, how can that be?!

Well, it’s simple. You see the sexy stuff is the cherry on top of the cake, but if the cake itself is rancid - ain’t nobody sticking around to eat it 🎂⚠️

Did you know it costs at least £5k per person when you have to replace someone?

That’s based on CAP’s research reporting it costs between 16 - 213% of salary to replace someone when you factor everything in.

At just 16%, on the UK’s average salary, that’s £5k per person.

And it’s probably more, it can be as high as over twice their annual salary for senior or more complex roles.

Plus you can’t quantify someone’s value to the team simply on their own individual output.

Maybe they’re not a star performer, but their presence could make everyone around them perform better 🤷‍♂️

Say you’re a business with 100 employees and 30% leave (never mind 50..) it’s costing you AT LEAST £150,000 per year replacing people..
. and the replacements you bring in, may not work out 💀

How many leavers did you have in the past year? Multiply that by £5,000 - what’s your cost to replace?

Remember: that’s the MINIMUM based on 16%, not 213… 🫥

🚨DO YOU WANT TO GET ENGAGED?! (To your employees… this is gonna get weird 👀)

Well, it’s not the grand gestures once or twice a year that make the difference.

Grand gestures are exciting at the time, and everyone likes a surprise here and there! 🎈🎁
.but like the boyfriend who shows up with flowers having been playing away - it eventually gets seen through 🥀

One of the biggest learnings for me with the data from mooqi (our employee experience app), has been that throwing perks or money at people doesn’t result in engagement.

Ongoing care, compassion, respect, trust, communication and true team synergy make the difference.

Engagement is about relationships👈

Now don’t get me wrong, that’s not an excuse to ignore the other stuff!!!

No-one wants a stingy partner, and people who know their worth won’t be taken for granted.

There are fundamental pillars which must be in place around things like pay and workloads for people to want to stick around.

✨But you can pay well and not have engagement✨

People will be there in body, but are they contributing?

I need to take a moment and say… wow. Karina Todd, Simon Ward, Philip Brady, Ben Gadd you are my heroes 🙌

Honestly, these events are nothing without leaders like you coming and sharing with the rest of us and I learnt a lot from each of you today, and had fun in the process!

There’s so much appetite out there for the Vibrant Workplace movement and I’m thankful to every one of you who came along today to be part of this journey.

Thank you to for your support in making this event happen, to for capturing it (lots of content coming soon to share with you!) and to the T3 Conference Centre team who offer incredible facilities but donate all proceeds to charity.

This movement is only getting started, but each of you are the people who will determine how far it goes.

We can have a better working world, for both employers and employees. One in which:

Episode 19 of the podcast titled ‘Menopause Unmuted’ is now LIVE with Karina Todd FCA from ‘Over the Bloody Moon’!

Sometimes people say to me they like the podcast - they don’t listen to every episode but tune in to the ones that are relevant to them.

That makes sense to me.

But, for this episode I would like to request everyone tunes in - whether you have / will / or won’t experience menopause.

Because this is not a topic to discuss solely with people who experience it - it needs attention from all of us so we can understand what those who are experiencing it are going through and how we can support them.

Karina helped educate me a lot in this episode. We discussed:

▪️What menopause is and the associated symptoms
▪️How it affects those who experience it and their careers
▪️How managers and co-workers can better support their colleagues
▪️What organisations can do to create a menopause-inclusive environment

Weekly reminder that people who commit more of their life to work than anything else they will ever do in their waking hours deserve to be cared for in return.

And caring for them is better for business anyway 🤷‍♂️

It leads to better:

👉Engagement
👉Performance
👉Retention
👉Customer satisfaction
👉Customer retention

👉Profitability!
