As I get ready for our sold out tours this weekend, I was thinking about how I embrace this time of the year.
I love it! The colder the better. No better time to get out into Nature - it’s great for our health and well being.

Come September, I get very excited because it’s the start of the Red Kite Winter Roost tours that I run every weekend through the winter months. (From the end of September to the end of February.)
The colder the better.
Cold but smiling. These pics show how Red kite winter tours make you feel. Loads of craic with lashings of hot drinks and home made cake. I love bringing guests round our beautiful landscape in South Down to watch the amazing Red kites gathering against the stunning backdrop of the Mourne mountains and watch as the sun sets behind Slieve Gullion. It’s magical!
Dates remaining:
10, 17, 23rd November
7th & 8th December
Christmas vouchers for the lover of nature in your life, out soon.
Reading the RSPB’s crime report this morning, makes sickening reading.
This beautiful, rare leucistic Red Kite, Pink 6V(aka Vivienne) was illegally shot, seriously wounded and had to be put to sleep because if it’s injuries, locally back in April, this year.
ALL birds of prey are PROTECTED by Law.
If you suspect a wildlife crime, report to the PSNI on 101.

A wonderful day at Castlewellan Show.
Red Kite Tours NI along with the newly formed South Down Red Kite Support Network had a stand in the Eco village.
Our ethos is to enthuse, educate, engage and inform our local community about everything to do with Red Kites.
Despite Red Kites having now been well establish in our area, they are still suffering serious persecution.
I’m VERY excited this morning!
No, not Red Kites…but I’ve just spotted a Spotted Flycatcher in my garden!!
We haven’t had them here for several years so imagine my delight when this little beauty showed up!!
Beyond delighted.

I’ve had to maintain ‘radio silence’ since 20th April while the PSNI investigated this Wildlife crime.
This very rare leucistic Red Kite, Pink 6V, aka Vivienne (named after my friend Vivienne who was present at its tagging as a chick) was brought to us by a caring farmer neighbour who’d found the injured bird in his field. I recognised it immediately as he carried the injured bird towards me.
When Kenny, my husband, examined it, he found that it had a very badly broken wing, so unfortunately it had to be put to sleep.
I was devastated!
After being X Rayed at the Rathfriland Veterinary Clinic, it was then discovered that the bird had been shot!
This very rare bird was seen regularly in our area and enjoyed by so many people.
It’s unimaginable to me and difficult to understand what makes people want to shoot these magnificent creatures.
I’d love to know what they think. I’d like to talk to them to explain how Red Kites are our friends. They clear up ‘dead stuff’. They prefer carrion to catching live prey. They are the ‘farmer’s friend’.
