Last weekend, I was lucky enough to visit Dieppe and the surrounding areas and as we were entering the village where we were staying, we noticed that the name sign for the village was upside down (which I thought was a bit weird). I thought to myself had the worker that had fitted it been drinking or had someone changed it around as a bit of a joke!!

However, it became apparent as we drove through various villages that the error had been made across a number of signs. Was there a reason for it, were we entering the village from the wrong end?, so I wanted to find out about why this was happening across rural France.

Apparently,young farmers are heading out into their local communities, armed with a screwdriver, to turn the welcome signs upside down - and in many communes local authorities have decided to leave them like that as a mark of solidarity (or because they haven't got round to turning them round yet).

The protests began in Tarn in south-west France but have spread through the country and upside down signs can now be seen from the Mediterranean coast up to Normandy and Brittany in the north.

They are accompanied by the slogan 'Nous marchons sur la tรชte' (we're walking on our heads) to signal a world turned upside down or a policy that makes no sense.

The reason for these strange happenings? It's a protest, largely orchestrated by the farming union that represents young agriculture workers.

So what are they protesting about? Overall, they are dissatisfied with the government's policy on agriculture, but their demands are a mixture of the domestic, European and global - and some have already been met.

Prime minister Elisabeth Borne met with farming unions at the start of December and immediately agreed to two of their more specific demands - licence fee increases for water pumping and pesticide use have been scrapped from the 2024 budget.

However other grievances remain relating to tax and diesel and payment of EU subsidies. French farmers are also bitterly opposed to the EU's Mercosur treaty with South America which, they say, would flood the European market with cheap Brazilian and Argentinian beef.

Unions also complain that the French government is following a contradictory agricultural policy in which farmers are supposed to become more eco-friendly but also increase yields, and keep prices low to limit food price inflation.

So the next time you are travelling through France, if you see these upside down signs, then you will know the reason why they are turned upside down!!

Bank Holiday Weekend Away

Had a great trip across to France at the weekend. We sailed across from Newhaven to Dieppe by DFDS Ferries on Saturday morning (which is great alternative to going from either Dover or Portsmouth and reasonably good value). From Dieppe we drove up to a village near Le Treport and stayed in a lovely 2 bed cottage, which was a perfect base for exploring the local area. During our stay, we visited Mers Les Bains, Le Treport and Le Crotoy which had great beaches and some colourful houses. Also, we visited Abbeville along with the Chateau at Eu (with its Museum Louis Phillipe) and of course sampled some local culinary delights.

We returned back to the UK late on bank holiday Monday, again using DFDS (Cote D'Albatre). It was a fun weekend and we managed to dodge the few showers that we had.

The only downside to the journey was the time it took to queue to clear passport control on both sides of the Channel (the check are much more stringent since Brexit and our ability to access the Schengen Zone..

However, you can't beat a short visit away to sample different cultures/sights and the enjoyment/wonder that travel brings.

I visited our Seaford Shop last Saturday for a few hours to see how things operate from a shop's point of view. It was great to sit down, to go through a few things with Alison (Branch Manager) and see first hand how different it is to how a homeworker operates.

I enjoyed my day and even though it was a long drive, it was well worth it to see what it is like dealing with customers face to face (I soon realised that you need to assess the customerโ€™s requirements fairly quickly and also have a decent knowledge of the type of tour operators/suppliers that are suitable for their circumstances and their budget in order to keep them interested). First impressions do really count in this situation.

Thanks Alison for your time and advice and I look forward to visiting the shop again at some point.

Experience It Now Travel - Tip Top Travel Update

Well it's been over 4 months since I started out on my new venture and I thought it would be good to give everyone an update of how things are progressing.

Firstly, online training sessions were held over a number of weeks by Kim and Chloe (with the support from owners Richard & Caz) from Experience It Now (who are a travel agency based in East Sussex who are affiliated to the Hays Group). They took us through the various systems/suppliers and social media training which was both informative and enjoyable, this enabled us to go live with our ventures in mid to late January.

In February, I visited the Destinations - Holiday & Destinations Show at Olympia, where I met some of our escorted tours suppliers such as:

Believe me it was an amazing feeling to chat to their teams about their many offerings in terms of escorted tours, along with the finding out about the support they offer to homeworking travel agents. The buzz that I felt coming away from the show was brilliant and started to give me ideas on what I need to promote going forward.

Since then, I have tried to develop my Facebook business page by posting a number of different holiday deals and information about what some of the tour operators offer (in fact I won an Arosa River Cruises โ€˜wins-dayโ€™ prize last week for my social post about them, which also included a video showing their flagship boat Arosa Sena).

On a personal note, I have organised a day trip Stockholm (for my wifeโ€™s birthday}, been on a 7day tour of Portugal (incl Lisbon, Porto, Nazare, Coimbra, Fatima and Benfica stadium (for my other passion football!)) and am looking forward to a trip to Vancouver & the Canadian Rockies in the near future.

It has been and continues to be a slow process (as I am combining this with my full time job as an accountant). I am continually trying to learn more about the various Tour Operators on what they have to offer and how I advertise those offers through social media.

I feel lucky to be doing something that I have wanted to do for years (thanks to Experience It Now), that is to help people organise holidays to the places they have always dreamed about and hopefully get the same buzz that I have got (and still get) from travel.
