Day 4 - Victoria (Vancouver Island) & Flight back to Vancouver

We packed up and left our Airbnb in Sooke today (checked out on time at 11am (although it was close, as we managed to watch the 1st half of the game between England & Slovakia). We headed to Victoria (Vancouver Island's capital) and we
managed to get parking right on the Harbour front, which was handy for our visit. It was a hive of activity with ferries moving about in the harbour & sea planes taking off & landing. We walked along the waterfront, where we saw the legislative building of British Columbia and the various flower creations dotted around (Victoria is known as the City of Gardens. (In fact, one of the main attractions is Butchart Gardens, which showcases over 900 varieties of plants spread across 55 acres of stunning landscapes).We visited the oldest China town in Canada and ate great food at the Jam Cafe (which we had a great choice of food and large portion sizes - so if visiting Victoria it is definitely worth a visit and the decor was pretty cool as well).
After our short, but enjoyable visit, we drove back and dropped the hire car off to Avis (which was far easier than the original pick up issues that we had) and checked back in with Air North for our 15 minute flight back to Vancouver (a great local airline and comparatively cheap compared to other larger airlines (and as a bonus you can take 2 * 23kg cases for no extra charge))!!.
At Vancouver Airport we picked up our 8 seater vehicle for the next two weeks of the journey, there were 6 of us, but we needed extra space for our cases (as boot sizes of vehicles we looked at for Canada were too small to accommodate all 6 cases (this turned out to be the perfect size for our journey up to and stay in the Canadian Rockies). The process of collecting the car was pretty seamless and well organised the guy on the desk was both helpful and funny and he managed to save us money on the original quote we had (about $600 to $700 Canadian Dollars), which was a great surprise and refreshing change (as we were expecting them to sell us extra insurance & cover (albeit I was prepared with paperwork and had taken out all of the cover that we needed including excess waiver cover/additional drivers etc).
First stop, 2 nights stay in Delta, Vancouver for the Canada Day celebrations, which was about 20 minutes journey time from the airport.

Day 3 - Vancouver Island - Visited Malahat Skywalk, fantastic views of the islands around Vancouver Island, from there we went to Lake Cowichan (for lunch) followed by a walk round the City of Totem Poles in Duncan then made are way down to the Kinsol Trestle (wooden railway bridge which took 6 years to build back in the early 20th century) . Ended the day at Stickleback Tap House and Cider for dinner, which had great views by the lake.

Day 2 - Vancouver Island - Woke up to sunshine. So went for an early morning walk to a local park in Sooke which had a boardwalk where you could enjoy amazing views. Next we walked back into town and had breakfast at a local cafe (I must say that the lady in the shop was really friendly). Next up we drove down to Whiffin Spit where we walked along (again with amazing views). Finally, we visit Sooke Potholes Provincial Park, which was a bit of hike but we'll worth it. It was a nice relaxing day to get over the long travel day.

Canada Day 1 - We flew out of Gatwick with British Airways to Vancouver on a 777 and overall the flight was good, the seat back entertainment was of a decent standard and the food was fine - Thai Veg Curry and then later in the flight a chicken pastry. The flight time just under 9 hours. Arrived Vancouver Airport 13.00 local time. Immigration was great, all done by computer terminals in airport. Slight delay at baggage reclaim (bit of confusion on which belt they were coming through on. Then we had a 4.5hr wait for our connecting flight to Vancouver Island. We used a regional airline called Air North which served the mainly the Western side of Canada. Check in was great (although slightly confused as to where to check in as 10 to 15 minute walk from international arrivals. Nice airport, plenty of little shops and eateries (we went to Wendies). The Air North flight was great flying over a number of smaller islands at 4000 feet to Victoria VThe flight is actually the shortest commercial 737 flight in Canada and we were in the air for less than 15 minutes. We picked the car up (Minivan as 6 of us) Not a great experience, Avis booked through an intermediate company (Canada Affair). Took us about 1hr to sort everything out as confusion over what coverage etc we had regarding insurance and number of drivers (fortunately had all the paperwork showing super inclusive, so no additional charges. Paid for GPS on the top of the range minivan only to discover that GPS taken off(apparently on all minivans that were available) Cost saving exercise maybe!! Anyway after a trip back to the car hire desk, they managed to find a plug in device that fortunately has been OK. Drove down to Sooke and finally got to our Airbnb at 10pm (just over 24 hours after starting a jourrne). Very tired!!
