The passing of Alex Salmond, at the relatively young age of 69, is a huge blow to the Alba Party, the Scottish nationalist movement , and a personal tragedy for his family and all of his friends.

He was a man of intellect and huge political skills, who connected effortlessly with people of all backgrounds.

I have been on the "stump" with him, and I saw how people who may have been initially hostile to him were won over by his friendliness, approachability, and his willingness to listen to their concerns.

His achievements were legion; but to this day, he remains the leader who brought Scotland closest to independence, an achievement now cruelly betrayed by many who proved unworthy of his trust and support.

With Alex, you were comfortable in the conviction that our cause was in safe, reliable, and skilled hands.
His stature was undeniable, and internationally acknowledged. He did not run around the fringes of conferences, seeking selfies. Rather, he took his place with world leaders, and such was his presence that he looked not one bit out of place.
He was a leader; our leader.

If he had not resigned the leadership of the SNP in 2014 (a decision he later regretted), I am confident that we would now be an independent nation. It is his, and our tragedy, that this was not to be.
He now takes his place amongst the great heroes of Scotland. We have not seen a politician and leader of his ability and stature in living memory, and indeed in modern times. It is unlikely we will do so again.

The independence movement and Alba have been dealt an awful blow. Very dark days lie ahead for Scotland, but it is now our duty to carry on, to honour his memory by fighting for, and delivering, freedom for our nation and all its' people.

He will be missed by all thinking Scots of goodwill.
